I went in today a little nervous because I haven't rode a bike in a long time and I'm a beginner bike owner/purchaser. Daniel is a very smart bicycle mechanic and helped me understand the components of the bikes, what would best suit me, and entertained my questions. He also gave me tips and let me try them out. I took my bike in that was a hand me down (used for commuting to work) to have them fix the seat which kept coming off and replace it if necessary. They convinced me that it would be smart to get a tune up, and since I don't know too much about bikes I agreed. They said that they had a lot of bikes needing to get worked on so it would be 7-10 days. On day 10 I went in to ask when it would be ready as I would need to use it in two days. They got it ready by the next day, and I was super excited... only for my disappointment to begin. First off, the handlebars were loose which is something that I would assume would be in the tune up. Then two days later I start hearing squeaking when I was pedaling which shouldn't be happening since there wasn't any bad weather and I store it inside. I was near another bike shop later that week, so I went in to see what they thought. They pointed out all of the things that they noticed within the first 5 minutes, so I went back to Hams to ask about these things and they said that everything else besides the handlebars being loose (which he admitted was a mistake and apologized) wasn't include in the tune up. So, I asked them what they DID do, and what he described was not worth the $65 that I paid. I asked for a partial refund, but everything is final sale there. People like the shop because they try to be friendly, but they're really just amateur mechanics. Such a rip off and definitely not worth it in my opinion. read more

This neighborhood establishment is worth supporting! My husband and I moved to the city from the suburbs and wanted new bikes to roll through the city, so we stopped by Hamcycles who had recently moved from the location on Dunlavy to a larger space on Fairview. We purchased a couple of cool ass bikes and are excited about putting some miles on them. The service was more than we would've received at any large, commercial establishment. We are novice bike riders and they were informative and answered all of the important questions. They gave tips and advice on the different styles and helped us select bikes that fit our lifestyle. The store is cool, too. They have some pretty witty merch that's so appropriate for our neighborhood! read more

Stopped here to service my son's bike. Everyone was very friendly and took care of me quickly. Love their tshirts and other merch.

My experience at this bike shop started very positively but ended abysmally. The shop kept setting expectations that they did not keep. I test rode several bikes and the promised to have a bike ready for me multiple times on different dates. When I finally got to the shop to pick up my bike today they said it wasn't even built and that I will need to pre-pay the full amount for them to be motivated to build it for me at all. This final person I talk to also said that at a minimum they should've received a deposit, which I would have been happy to pay if I had been asked in the first place. She was extremely rude and expressed clearly that she did not want my business. It's a shame when a customer is so excited about a product and money is no issue but Customer Service gets in the way of an easy and satisfying transaction. Cool bikes but too cool for you service. Update 1: Owner and manager contacted me to address the issue and coach their staff Update 2: I bought the bike in spite of the experience because they are the only reseller for the brand I wanted in this city. Customer service got up to "normal" levels but there was no attempt to "delight". My opinion hasn't changed but I love my new bike. read more

Charlotte greeted us as soon as we showed up and dove right in giving detail about bikes that would be perfect for the type of activity we would want to do. She was so personable and informative! Thankfully they have a wonderful stock (and can adjust bikes to fit your needs), so my boyfriend ended up swapping out the handlebars on his purchase of a Retrospec Harper in matte black. Covid, Covid, COVID! I, like 99.9995% of you found myself quarantined this year and decided that I needed to find another way to do an "outing" while social distancing. I realized...I needed to finally get a bike. So, I looked on the Google machine and searched for locally owned bike shops with top reviews...and ladies & gents...I found this place. It was in the very beginning of Covid and no one knew what to do or say or how to work or shop with all these new restrictions. But I gotta hand it to these guys, they were as kind and patient and polite as anyone could hope for. I know nothing about buying a bike (yes, I DO know HOW to ride one, but that is about it) and the young guy was very frank with me when I explained what I was looking for my bike to do for me - where I planned on riding it, weight of lifting it up, easy ability to repair, etc. I had my eye on a Cruiser and it was a lot more expensive and the guy talked me out of it and saved me almost $150 in the end. THAT IS PRICELESS. I have had to return for a few minor things - mainly because I am a novice and just didn't know a few things and not because of anything was wrong with my purchase. This owner will change his tune about repair estimates and then trash you on a bad review as he does everyone else who is not happy about his lack of professionalism while telling you one thing and doing another. After the repair on a bike I bought there developed a clicking noise now the entire crank shaft is coming apart after his so called $56.00 repair that's was going to be no charge if I bought a bike rack then that was no longer the deal after the repair had been done. Today I ended up walking back home with the bike for two miles now that his so called repair two months ago has resulted in the entire crank shaft coming apart. My advice is to shop somewhere else. The guy is a complete snot if you aren't happy about his lack of ethics after getting about $450.00 for a piece of junk.. read more

HAM Cycles was a great shop to get my new bike assembled. After ordering a bike online and receiving the huge cardboard box with parts neatly packed away inside, I was a little overwhelmed by the thought of having to put it together. Rather than struggle through YouTube instructional videos, I figured I'd try out this local shop some of my friends had recommended to give me a hand. 30 minutes and $53 later, I had a brand new bike adjusted for my height and ready to roll. Not only does HAM Cycles do repairs and sell new bikes but they also carry parts, accessories, locks, helmets, socks and other bike gear. Parking is somewhat limited and there isn't a ton of space out front to test out different rides but otherwise I was very happy with the whole experience. I would definitely return. read more

Please save yourself the time and do not come here for any bike repairs. I went in because a Mongoose mountain bike I purchased 6 months ago from Academy for $399 had a broken pedal. Took my bike on a Tuesday evening around 5:30pm. I was told by the mechanic that since it was late he would get to it the next day and it could possibly be around $40. He struggled for a bit to loosen the bolt needed and even lit a torch and tried to do something that way. Seemed extreme but what do I know. No word for 2 days about the bike then after checking on it, I was told they received a large order of bikes and he will get to mine the next day. Clearly my bike was a low priority. Another day passes and I was given a new quote of $95. No problem. The next day I was informed my bike isn't repairable and it would be cheaper to buy a new bike. They said labor would be around $150 plus parts so clearly no, I can't replace it. I don't like to argue so I just left. Anyone with some sense can gather that something went wrong at the shop and they destroyed it beyond the repairs that I initially took it there for. If you take a part off and can't even put it back on, does that not mean you broke it in the process? To add insult to injury, the nonchalant don't care attitude of "it'll be cheaper to replace it" is insane especially when you don't know the price I paid. Why not just give the customer a quote and let them decide what's worth fixing? In conclusion, find another shop to visit for bike repairs if you want to avoid a week long headache that'll lead to disappointment read more

May 2022 Update: Just stumbled upon the owner's response to this review, and am almost as stunned today as I was when I wrote the original review, for much of his response is, well, a complete fabrication. -At no time was I offered a gift card for a future purchase, or 'first dibs' on a future restocked bike, or offered a bike upgrade. Didn't happen. The only option I was EVER given was to pick another bike from the few options they offered, none of which worked for me. -I never made any threat whatsoever of writing a review, presumably as a way to extort one thing or another out of them, nor did I mention the topic of a review at all. Just didn't happen. I simply wrote the review after the whole thing concluded to be helpful to other people. Which is what reviews are supposed to be for, right? The review wasn't about getting back at them; it was about paying it forward. -I didn't change my mind on what bike I wanted; they took my money for a bike they never had, then tried to talk me into a totally different bike they did have. -I never "made a scene" at their shop, because I was never physically at the shop after the moment I purchased the bike I thought I was getting. I left their shop that day happy I about the bike I thought I had purchased. Everything after that happened over the phone. No "scene" ever happened because I wasn't ever physically there for it to happen. -And finally, to be 100% crystal clear, I have no issue with the staff at Ham Cycles whatsoever. They were nothing but courteous and professional with me. It was obvious from the moment the staff contacted me by phone, though, that they were very nervous/afraid of what would happen with their boss if they couldn't get me to agree to choose a totally different bike - they knew he would refuse to allow them to refund my money, they knew he would refuse to speak with me when I asked to speak with the owner, and they knew they would be yet again caught in the middle. Which is, well, exactly what happened. I could tell at the time that the situation the staff was in with me was a place they had been in many, many times before. So the problem wasn't the staff. The problem is the shop's owner who puts his own people in completely impossible, no-win situations. read more

Outstanding customer service, gave great advice, have been wonderful to work with. I'm extremely pleased with Ham Cycles. I purchased during the Covid pandemic, when everyone and their dog wanted a bicycle. These poor guys were slammed with business, but still took the time to work with me, teach me about the product and give their recommendations and advice. I've been back four times since, and every time they have been patient and helpful and kind. I've only had the opportunity to refer them twice in person, but for the Yelpers out there looking for a bike or cycle equipment, I encourage you to give Ham cycles a try. I bought a Retrospec Chatham bicycle from Houston HAM Cycle. Rarely used it and for around $350.00 new I wasn't impressed with its ease of a bike ride. Slow and lugging kinda ride but I owned it. While later decided I better get in better shape and a bike is certainly a good way to do that so I began a daily routine of riding the bike. The crank started knocking and it became so annoying that it had to be looked at so I thought the best place to take it was who I bought it from, maybe they would give me a break. The tech at the desk said if you are also interested in a bike rack well see what we can do about getting it running better without any charge and you just buy the rack. I said sounds great I wasn't looking for them to take it apart and start running the clock on labor. Their story changed when it was time to pick up the bike and then they said it would be nearly $60.00 in labor and the person demanding the labor charge wasn't the person who made the initial offer to wave labor if I buy the rack. It became labor plus cost of bike rack. I said that wasn't the deal I was made. Long story short, they are not people of their word and change up their charges when it's time to pick up the bike and weren't going to back down. I paid the labor and won't be back. read more

I was a repeat customer to Ham Cycles because they had been very helpful to me in the past. I dropped my bike off for a tuneup and brake cable repair. I was told it would be "no more than a week." A week later I got a call telling me that they had to special order the cable. I wasn't upset about that, as that wasn't Ham Cycles' fault. They said it would be a few days. Another full week went by and the cable still hadn't arrived. Two and a half weeks after I dropped the bike off, I received a call stating that the cable was in and would be installed that afternoon. So I said I'd be by the next morning to pick the bike up. I just got here to the store and the cable has not been installed and the worker who is here doesn't even know where the cable is. He cannot get in touch with the person who claimed he would install the cable yesterday. In addition to all that, we had set aside a new bike for purchase when we came in 2 and a half weeks ago. At that time we requested special handlebars to be ordered for that bike. The handlebars were never ordered and it looks like the bike we had asked the be put aside is back on their shelf for sale. This entire experience has been extremely frustrating and disappointing. read more

Bought a starter Haro Beasley here and after a week the left hand break stopped working. I took it back and they repaired it. I took it back again after the left hand brake went out again. I nearly fell off the bike. They fixed it again. A couple of weeks later the seat came loose out at Hermann park and I almost fell off into a ditch. I took it in for a third time in one and half months. I took the bike to another shop and they fixed it for around 50. Nice guys but I probably won't buy from them again. read more

I had been a loyal Fletcher Bike customer until the service just went to crap and I literally waited over a year for some parts. I would call back and remind them every few months. Never got a call back. I had come to Ham when I bought my bikes but they didn't have quite the style I wanted. I came back today for some service help and Johnathon helped me. What an amazing difference in service. I felt important and that my business mattered to them. I wasn't a burden. I would highly recommend Ham for all your biking needs. June 1: the bikes are mine! May 29: according to Kent who is a shipping manager at Bikeflights, he was able to get in contact with FedEx's Houston terminal and confirm my bikes sitting in a lost and found! They did NOT have the shipping labels I bought and instead had multiple other labels (being reused boxes) that were marked out, such as with a sharpie. I admire conservation but definitely not carelessness in handing over bike packages without shipping labels. Plus I was reassured so repeatedly that they had the labels I provided. Looking forward to a 3-week delayed reunion! Curious to see whether those two bikes are even mine May 26: I lost two bikes after giving them to Ham Cycles for disassembly and packing. The people at this shop are friendly and make it seem like the process is hands off on your part after you give them your bikes. The truth is, you're better off following up often and attempting to ship them out on your own. There are too many handoffs that could go wrong. In my case, I decided to have them pack and ship my bike. I bought labels through Bikeflights which is a company they recommend for getting discounted bike shipping through Fedex. A few things could have happened; this list isn't exhaustive: 1. Ham Cycles never gave them to Fedex 2. The dedicated Fedex rep, who nobody at the shop was able to tell me who this is, never brought them to a shipping center 3. Fedex itself lost my package Edward at Ham Cycles said he was able to call Fedex which said they don't have my bikes and are investigating this matter. Once I called Fedex myself, the story started to make less sense. Fedex said the shipper never picked up or never scanned the bikes. The shop is busy enough serving new customers that problems from weeks back get delayed attention. What is dodgy to me is the shop's seeming lack of internal control over shipping. I was told only that my bikes "could have" shipped on May 4 or 7--so they're may not be logging the dates the bikes are going out. You may be better off making an appointment with Ham Cycles if they do such a thing, or any bike shop that does, and watching their employees disassemble and pack your bike. Once the packages are sealed and ready to ship, you should take them to Fedex (should you use Bikeflights) or UPS personally. read more
