The sales associate is charging $10 to "test ride" bikes. When laughing at the policy (bike barn will let you test drive for free, go there...) he literally closed the door in my face. First off let me start off by saying ham cycles has a really good inventory and they seem very knowledgeable. I went to ham cycles for the first time a few days ago to purchase a single speed bicycle ( retrospec mantra V2). They had a special going on where if you bought a new bicycle you got a free helmet, which is always a nice bonus. However the workers seemed distracted and didn't really offer any guidance or help in selecting a bicycle. I basically picked the one I wanted and asked to test ride it then said I'd buy it with no questions or further comments from the sales staff. Now this is fine since I went in knowing which bike I want but I could see this as off putting if I was still unsure. My main issue with the shop was they didn't look over the bike at all. Didn't check size, fill tires, check to make sure the wheels were true, nothing. Didn't ask if I needed any accessories with the bike at all, really didn't do anything aside from " well here's your new bike, have a nice life with it , there's the door". I really want to like ham cycles , I support the local bike scene and I don't regret from buying from a local shop. I do feel as if they could have done more to help or at the very least make sure the bike was immediately ride able. The person I went with also bought a bike from them months back and had the same experience and described it as " it was as if I was inconveniencing them by giving them my business". Luckily my bike was in good shape however it did immediately need air ( as I mentioned something they should have checked before). Probably wouldn't buy from them again anytime soon and would shop around to the other local area shops :-/. read more

HAM Cycles is the epitome of how small businesses should operate. I ordered some Pure Fix bikes for Christmas and had no earthly idea how to assemble them. A friend of mine who rides the MS150 recommended HAM Cycles and it was truly a blessing. Not only did HAM Cycles assemble two bikes for me, but they also kept them serviced and taught me how to properly maintain my bike as well. I ran into an issue with one of my bike's back tires and after replacing the tube several times (at no cost after the first time), they recommended I reach out to the manufacture and sure enough, I had a defective part. Certain employees are friendlier than others, but I've always been satisfied with the service. If you're in need of a good bike shop, HAM Cycles will definitely hold you down. read more

Great service. I had my kid's tire tube replaced before and went back this time to get help setting up a foldable bike I purchased from somewhere else. The staff member (I wished I could remember his name!) helped me put the chain back on, adjusted the brakes and gave it a nice tune up. I was in and out in less than 30 minutes. The work he did was way above my capabilities and he was very reasonable with the fees. Love, love the customer service here. read more

The employee acted as if he didn't want to be there and/or didn't care to help. I came in at 6:35pm just needing a rear brake pad replaced and he said "do you absolutely need it or can you come back cause we close in 25min". I informed him I ride my bike to work every day and I need it. He shrugged and said okay. The job took 3min and then I was charged $27!! (See picture) Apparently $13 for the brake pad plus another $12 for "labor" then tax. The labor cost on my receipt says for "brake adjustment" but they didn't do anything to 'adjust' my brakes would have been nice for that price for them to at least adjust my front and back brake cables. Really don't think I'll ever come back here again. read more

I've also noticed they're like the only bike shop in town that's actually taking the coronavirus outbreak seriously and have been enforcing very common sense rules to limit the spread of the virus. It demonstrates to me that they genuinely *care* about the community and their employees, even if certain segments of the population couldn't care less who's health they risk. Tiny little bike shop in Montrose. Staff was super friendly and helpful. My hubby was looking for some commuter type bike shorts and thought since they have an extensive selection of fixed gears they might carry but unfortunately they did not. The guy working was helpful and gave suggestions of other places we could find them. The place is filled to the brim with bikes and a small selection of accessories for your dikes. We grabbed a new water bottle while we were there. They seem to do a pretty steady repair business in back. read more

Houston's only Cinelli dealer they can set you up on a single speed/fixed gear that will up your street credits as you swang down Westheimer. Balling on a budget? They got you covered too with State and Retrospec. Cruising up Heights Blvd more your speed? They have a Dutch style city bikes for the distinguished cafe/brunch commuter. Also, their in-house and locally designed clothing will set you apart from the masses. There's plenty of bike shops in this city, you could go to any sterile big box store and have a good enough experience. I dropped of my road bike for a chain replacement, while I was there I mentioned that my left shifter was not working properly. The employee told me that he would repair the chain and take a look at the shifter to try and fix it. Left my contact information, they said they would call me when it was all done. A couple of weeks pass by and I have not heard from the shop. I decided to give them a call to check on my bike. The mechanic working on my bike told me that he had already replaced the chain and that he was working on the shifter. I stop by the next day (on a Friday) and found my bike with the old chain and the left shifter dis-assembled. The guy at the counter told me that the mechanic was out for the weekend. That is when I find out decided to take my bike from this so called "bike shop". Later found that the mechanic ruined my shifter by dis-assembling it. Now I have to buy a set of shifters. SoI just go back from picking up my new bike. The company I purchased it from had it shipped and put together there. The girl who worked the front was very friendly but didn't really go above and beyond. She just said enjoy. I had to ask to have the seat fitted/lowered..she just said oh yeah ok. I bought a bike Bell and asked her if I could use a small screw driver to put it on. She came back with one and then said ohhh this kind of Bell is for a mountain bike. So ...Ok did you not see the bike you just rolled out for me? It's a cruiser? Being a novice bike rider I would want a shop to assist me in the future and purchase items from, but the service didn't do much in the way of enticing me to come back as a repeat customer sad to say. read more

I have had fantastic experiences at Ham's Cycles. I have been here a few times off and on in the last couple of years for various minor needs, mostly inner tubes on a weekend. The last three times though were for help with a road bike I bought on craigslist. The bike needed new tires, new tubes, and a few other minor things. Suffice to say I botched half of the easy stuff and went back asking what to do, and Ham's helped me out. Mind you I am NOT an avid cyclist, am clueless about the basics until recently, and am probably the analogue of the guy who walks into amoeba records and asks for celine dion tapes. Today I walked in asking for some advice and the same gentleman helped me swap my wheels out, gave me free advice on my brakes, and didn't make me feel like a moron. I will be going back to this place to get work done for these reasons, again bare in mind i dont know about the fancy carbon fiber racing super bikes or bmx trick bikes. I bike with friends and my wife in the neighborhood and am slowly starting to consider biking to work. 1) they are close and easy to access on Dunlavy 2) their prices are absolutely reasonable or lower than expected 3) the people that work there are all very tolerant of ignorance, but even if they werent i would go back, they are knowledgeable and honest 4) i have been into other bike shops in various places. if you are not a bike enthusiast you often feel like the employees dont even see you. that is not the case here, thought you will still feel like a moron if you are clueless like i am. go to hams. you will feel terrific. read more

Every aspect of the transaction was perfect. Being a novice rider and ignorant when it comes to bicycles and bicycle accessories I was a bit hesitant about shopping there. I decided to go solely because there was a chance I could find a very specific bike that was not available online. Boy am I glad I did. Edward greeted my wife and I almost immediately upon entering. Knowing exactly what I was looking for he got straight into searching inventory and was able to order the item I previously had no luck with. He took the time to explain options such as wheels and handle bars without once being condescending. Many times small specialty shops get a bad rap for snobby employees and/or regulars but my experience what the opposite. Once the bicycle was ordered I was given an approximate time table for delivery and assembly which ended up being spot on. The only 'issue' was with an error on the manufacturer's end but Edward went the extra mile to find a solution and rectify the problem. I've been there to get my bike look at twice, the first time was so so. I don't know if I had my serious face on and didn't seem approachable but I didn't even get a Hi. The second time was great they guys greeted me and answer all my questions, some silly since I'm a new rider, but they were super helpful. The service was quick and decently priced. Some of the guys were nice one guy was just way too cool for school. The supplies we're limited, however, they do have a nice service shop in the back. Overall, the experience was great, but they just don't have the space to make it truly a one stop shop for bike related products and services. This is a rare thing in Houston: a bike shop that caters both to urban cyclists and those who like speedy road bikes. The owner/person I met inside (Frankie?) seems to really know his stuff. I appreciate that they like the aesthetics of the bike and not merely the gear itself. I really dislike some of the other bike shops in Houston (one in Rice Village) where they act like they know everything and haven't heard of city cycling in New York or Chicago, where the trends are for upright bikes, etc. They carry Surly, Linus and other gorgeous bikes. Nice Giro stuff inside, and a great minimalist finish to the shop (wood). read more

This store doesn't care about doing the right thing all they want to do, the sales staff is rude, made it seem like I was daft for coming in to look at bikes. Upon getting the bike things were lose there was large amounts of excess grease under the seat. I rode the bike for the first time and the front tube popped I noticed the front presta valve nut was missing earlier but they assured me it was ok to ride and offered to give me a new nut. However on the maiden journey the tube popped and I was told this can happen, I thought no worries I'll just replace the tube upon looking at the tube the size was incorrect, they won't stand behind the bikes or whoever dropped the ball, I had a heated conversation on Instagram with the owner was talking to me as if I got the bike from him off charity as I'm some indigent rather than a paying customer. Honestly all I wanted to hear after my complaint to the owner was don't worry stop on by well swap the tube out since it popped on your very first ride, not all this hate that's perpetuated by the zeitgeist. read more

Great little bike shop in the heart of Montrose. They sale and service all types of bikes. They specialize in track bikes and accessories. The owner and mechanic are both very helpful and knowledgeable about all types of bikes. They're the only place in Houston you'll find Cinelli bikes. I've personally bought 2 bikes from here and ready for my 3rd. You can never have too many bikes. One last thing, the owner of the shop does a lot to promote cycling in Houston by holding races and sponsoring other bike events around town. read more
