I mentioned some of the other things I was planning to buy eventually, and instead of trying to upsell me or push products on me, the guy helping me just gave me a ton of honest, useful information. That's honestly pretty rare nowadays. He recommended some padded cycling shorts to help with the pain I was having from longer rides and being a new rider, and I also picked up a tire chain lubrica. What stood out most was that he never felt like a salesman -- he just felt like a real, down-to-earth person who clearly loves bikes and enjoys helping people. There was zero pressure, just good advice and a friendly conversation. On top of that, he was super nice and even gave me a discount he definitely didn't have to give me. Brought my bike in, to check on the tire and maintenance. My bike has been sitting in my apartment for awhile. Both tires were flat and the bike looking rusty.. brought it in, they fixed both of my tires and check routine maintenance for my bike in less than 10 mins. I track down a BMX based bike shop in west Houston called Off Road Peddler who happily accepts my project and doesn't wince once at the fact that he has to build something with a little elbow grease and not just putting parts together out of a fresh new box. Is this a great bicycle shop? Yes. Are they knowledgeable? Yes. Is there a great selection of bicycles varied in price range? Yes. Did I feel like I was invisible when I walked into the place? YES. Did a staff member end up taking good care of me? YES. I visited West End Bicycles at the recommendation of a friend who had purchased there about a year or so ago. I wanted to upgrade to a "decent" bicycle after riding on a cheaply-made bicycle I had purchased from a big box retailer. I had a budget of $800 and West End had several options that met my needs. I was able to ride two cycles and decide which one I liked the best. The staff member (Michael) was helpful in explaining specifics of the bicycles and patient in dealing with me. I didn't like that I had to seek out help as it felt awkward. I walked away feeling like a novice in an expert world and while that's exactly what I was, I didn't necessarily need to be made to feel that way. I will say that I don't think it's intentional. It just is what it is. $800 on a bicycle is a big spend for me, and while they have $7000+ bicycles meant for expert, competitive riding, not everyone will be that customer. I think they're worth your time and can truly help you. Just be aware that you may need to push a bit at first to get the ball rolling. Your energy will be greater than theirs. read more

I wish it was possible to give less than one star. I totally missed what the other reviews were talking about. The service was terrible; beyond terrible. The staff seemed more interested in talking to each other than even caring about helping me find a bike or even making eye . I kept trying to get someones attention, but they were preoccupied. The place was not that busy, but having a conversation seemed much more important. Ended up at Bike Barn with great service and what seemed like better prices. AVOID. read more

Every once in a blue moon you come across a situation that restores your faith in mankind. DARREN at West End Bicycles did that for me Monday 5/4/20. I have an old beat up Specialized Sirrus, not the best bike but a damn solid one but of great sentimental value to me having put on thousands of miles going over the George Washington bridge, Brooklyn bridge en route to Coney Island , ripping thru Times Square, up & down the West Side along the Hudson River, then trailblazing up and down the Buffalo Bayou and Allen Pkwy when I moved to HTX and it was all dirt in 2011 before the construction Anyway she's been outside for 2 years, everything rusted, having given up long ago, during quarantine w a glimpse of hope, I called to see if they were open. I'm not sure who answered but a very nice gentleman told me they were open, kindly and patiently listened to what I needed, said they'd be happy to look but gave me fair warning that repairs are back logged 2weeks. I show up, mask on wait in cue outside the door, bike still in the car- Darren helps the lady in front of me and nicely assured me he'll soon be back out for me. While waiting, I pulled the bike out, he comes back out, gives it a once over, says w the necessary repairs and a tune up I am looking at at least $200, he says let me take it inside, give a look and let you know, I say thank you, excited about getting back on the saddle. He takes the bike inside, flat tires, wobbly wheels, rusted chain and all, about 10-15min later comes back out and says, "listen it's prob gonna be more like $300, and honestly, I know the bike is sentimental to you but it's really not worth it- SO HERE'S WHAT I DID"... he begins to show me... "you're gonna need some brake shoes but at least I got them off the wheel they still work and it will spin freely now, the chain is a bit stretched but I put some lubricant on the chain and it goes around pretty smooth, your tires were good so I filled them w air, and I got your gears switching, there's a few tics but as you use them they will smooth out... you're good to go"! I asked, "you mean I can ride". He says yeah man, nothing crazy but you can ride around the neighborhood- I said like 10-15 mile rides? He confidently affirms, I happily ask, well what do I owe you? Knowing I was more than ready to spend over $200 and maybe even the 3, He says nothin man. I say what??? Are you kidding??He says no, I'm serious. Cmon, I go into my pocket, he so nicely and genuinely says really man, nothing.... normally I would push the issue but it was apparent that this man was truly happy to just help. Understand people, this is not about getting something for free, it's acknowledging what a rare and special human being this guy is-GOD Bless you Darren! My wife and I came to this shop looking for a road bike with very little knowledge. We were looking for help and guidance and got exactly that. Kevin, the person that helped us, was extremely thorough and walked us through every step of the process like sizing, type of bike, etc. He was incredibly nice. It was also obvious he wasn't trying to pressure us to buy anything in particular and we felt really at ease and could trust his expertise. The people at West End are beyond helpful. I've rented bikes here ($35/day) several times now and they always go out of their way to make sure I'm satisfied and comfortable on the bikes I've gotten. I've gotten a free beer from them, an extra padded seat from them, and a lesson in gear adjustments. The only big issue is the parking. When it's busy and the lot is full, street parking can be hard to find. One time when I ran in because I forgot my helmet one of the neighbors of the shop had a serious issue with us parking for a minute while I ran in even though there was no "No Parking" sign. read more

West End is the best! I bought a Specialized Como from another dealer and took it to West End when the battery started failing after I had it for a short year and a half. West End went back and forth with Specialized for close to three weeks and finally convinced Specialized to replace the very expensive battery at no cost for me. It would have been easy for West End to throw in the towel and tell me that Specialized turned me down, but the great staff at West End saw it through. I'm obviously beyond grateful.
