West Coast Deck did an absolutely phenomenal job on our replacement deck and railing project! After several years of renting our house, we were addressing several items with deferred maintenance around the property when severe rot was discovered on a deck that's above a room. The rot had thoroughly permeated a set of facia boards that encircle the room, which juts out from the main house. The contractor we were working with said he doesn't work on projects with rot. I checked with our pest company, and they said they're not the best fit for the project, because in addition to replacing the rotted wood, the deck should be refinished/resealed as well, and ideally one company should do the entire project together. I called around and found it surprisingly difficult to find a company that does this type of work (without a 2+ month lead time). On one call, the company owner recommended West Coast Deck and said "they are one of the few companies I would trust to work on my own house." I reached out to them and talked to the owner Jameson, who visited the property in less than a day. He informed me about what a proper fix would require, which felt accurate given that 25+ years had passed since any meaningful work had been done to that part of the house, which gets constant exposure to sea air given its relative proximity to the ocean. When I agreed to work with West Coast Deck, I asked if they could prioritize our work given that we were hustling to prepare the house for rental. Jameson moved some of his crew around to accommodate our timeline, which was greatly appreciated! They started work shortly after we signed the contract. When the project got underway, I got a detailed timeline, followed by daily photo and video updates of the work, posted to a project management site. Given that I'm not in the area, this kind of transparency was incredibly helpful to track progress and ask questions along the way. I was shown the materials they were using and the various steps they were taking throughout the effort to fix the issue and properly refinish and seal the deck and then build the new railing. In the end, his crew did a stellar, first-rate job, which is shown in the photos. (The railing was painted just after these photos were taken.) The project was completed on time and on budget. I highly recommend this company for this type of work! read more

I am genuinely shocked and disappointed by my experience with West Coast Deck, particularly given their numerous positive reviews. My concerns involve two separate jobs, extremely questionable pricing, failed workmanship, and, perhaps worst of all, an astonishing lack of communication and accountability. Following serious water intrusion into my home, I hired West Coast Deck to install temporary protective covering over my approximately 180-square-foot upper deck. They charged $1,800 for what amounted to plastic sheeting and basic wooden supports. The price struck me as excessive immediately, but given the emergency, I proceeded. Unfortunately, the covering subsequently failed in the wind. I repeatedly contacted Jameson, including texting his personal cell phone, seeking assistance. My messages went unanswered. This was particularly unacceptable because the entire purpose of hiring them was to protect my already water-damaged home from further damage. Ultimately, I was forced to hire someone else. That individual did what I consider a substantially more thorough and professional job, including additional framing, overhead protection, and a floor tarp, for $300 TOTAL, including materials. One-sixth of West Coast Deck's charge! I've included photographs for comparison. But the pricing concerns don't end there. West Coast Deck also quoted approximately $32,000 for the permanent deck project. My instincts immediately told me something was wrong with that number. After speaking with other professionals, researching the work involved, and obtaining an actual competing proposal from another licensed contractor, I became even more appalled. West Coast Deck's proposal was almost 300% of the competing contractor's price! The competing proposal included proper deck waterproofing, tile installation, grout work, and associated repairs, yet came in at a dramatically lower price. West Coast Deck's proposal was not only substantially higher, but excluded important finishing work. While estimates can differ in scope, the disparity was extraordinary. And then there's the communication. Despite repeated messages regarding the failed covering, Jameson did not respond. Eventually, I spoke with Alyssa in the office, who was genuinely pleasant and assured me she would speak with the team and get back to me. Unfortunately, that promised follow-up never occurred either. What I found equally disturbing was what I discovered when I took a closer look at their negative reviews. Several previous customers described remarkably similar frustrations involving poor communication, missed commitments, delays, and unsatisfactory experiences. Even more concerning, I couldn't find a single response from the company to the negative reviews I examined. While businesses aren't obligated to respond publicly, that silence, combined with my own experience, left me with the distinct impression that customer satisfaction and accountability simply aren't priorities. Despite the failed installation, lack of responsiveness, and additional expense I incurred, I paid their $1,800 invoice in full. My complaint isn't about avoiding payment; it's about receiving the quality, professionalism, and accountability that should accompany it. I have no objection to paying premium prices for premium workmanship, professionalism, and service. But based on my experience, I received none of those things. The combination of pricing, failed temporary protection, lack of responsiveness, and failure to follow through is completely unacceptable. What began as concern over a high estimate became genuine disbelief after comparing actual work and competing proposals. I rarely feel compelled to write a review this negative, but prospective customers deserve to know what my experience was like. I strongly recommend obtaining multiple detailed estimates before considering this company. I would NOT EVER hire West Coast Deck again, under any circumstances. read more

Our experiences with West Coast Deck as they designed and built our new outdoor space, in Hidden Meadows, was exemplary. We researched and got references for several companies before selecting West Coast and know we made the right choice. Their attention to detail bolstered by great communication skills kept us at ease throughout the project. The team members and crew worked well together and everyone seems to have had the goal of delivering the best quality product possible. We extended our existing small patio into a large deck overhanging our hillside property working around and incorporating a number of the large boulders as part of it. There were a number of design challenges with that and they pulled it off beautifully. At one point, a transition step did not look ideal as constructed and Jameson and crew redesigned and reconstructed the area without question or a change order. That was indicative of West Coast Deck's overall attitude of "lets make this the best deck we can!" We happily recommend them. read more

Jameson and his crew did an excellent job repairing and waterproofing my deck at my house just in time and quickly before El Niño! The crew were very professional and courteous and cleaned up after themselves at the end of each work day. And the price was very reasonable. I reached out to Jameson for a consultation and proposal on a very complex poolside deck project in the Hollywood Hills. We are doing a full remodel of the existing pool, deck, outdoor kitchen, and outdoor living area. The entire structure needs to be replaced due to code issues, long term wood deterioration, and insect damage. After speaking with several industry contacts and asking who they would trust in Southern California for highly complex projects, multiple people pointed us toward West Coast Deck, which ultimately led us to Jameson and his team. This project involves challenging engineering, hillside caisson work, fire considerations, and structural conditions that many contractors are not equipped to handle. The scope includes steel framing, AZEK PVC decking, glass railing systems, an integrated patio cover, and significant structural concrete work. Jameson and his team were able to quickly identify the key challenges, explain what needed to be addressed, and help us think through viable solutions and a clear work plan for the site. If you are considering a complex hillside or poolside project, I would feel very comfortable recommending this team. read more

We recently had West Coast Deck rebuild our patio cover and deck, and we couldn't be happier with the results. Communication with Jameson and his team was outstanding from start to finish--clear, responsive, and always professional. The craftsmanship is excellent, and Jameson's design suggestions truly elevated the project. The team showed up on time every day, kept the worksite clean, and made sure tools and materials were put away at the end of each day. The timeline they provided was clear and concise, and they delivered right on schedule. We especially love the materials and the beautiful closed-in ceiling with integrated lighting and a fan--it completely transformed our space into the outdoor dining and entertainment area we had envisioned. West Coast Deck exceeded our expectations, and we would highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality work, great communication, and a team that takes pride in what they do. read more

I entertained half a dozen bids for my recent backyard project, a poolside lpê deck. The project was 1200 sq ft with a preexisting sunken infinity pool. After spending way too much time talking about what I wanted, there was ONE thing that set West Coast Deck apart from the rest... It was the people. Tino & Alex were my points of contact from start to finish and not once did I feel like they weren't doing exactly what I had asked. From the beginning, they listened to what I was saying and asked me questions to ensure that they weren't missing any details. After gathering the quotes for this project, I knew these guys wouldn't be the cheapest but it was also adherently clear that they would spend the necessary time to ensure the project was done right. I'm extremely pleased with my experience in hiring West Coast Deck. Consummate professionals from initial contact to project completion. See the photos and you'll know what I mean, these guys are SO GOOD. I'd recommend them to my mother if she had a yard that looked like this. read more

The West Coast Deck team rescued our poolside deck from disaster - we had hired a handyman on the suggestion of a friend and it quickly became clear that he couldn't handle the build. We did a search for builders who could navigate hillside projects with caissons in fire zones and found Jameson. They helped us navigate engineering and design, the county permitting process (we are in Escondido), and the build. The deck turned out incredible and the team was really great to work with and be around - the foreman, Tino, is awesome. We selected TimberTech AZEK Coastline for the decking with a Hickory border, and custom cable railing with a cedar skirt. Can't recommend these guys enough - hard to find experienced builders for this type of a complicated project. read more

Spectacular transformation of our Del Mar African Mahogany hardwood deck - the before/after photos beat my words. We'd been reluctant even to try to restore this deck because we'd purposely exposed it to the elements without sealing for more than a decade (a story there). But we decided to get feedback and bids to assess restoration feasibility. We trusted Jamison and WCD immediately and jettisoned alternative companies. The conversations exploring whether and how to restore the deck were patient, detailed, and lacked salesmanship - we were told point blank and repeatedly that there were risks it might not work. We discussed different approaches and products before settling on Penofin Penetrating Oil Finish for Hardwood (transparent IPE), and applied two coats spaced by two months. Wow. read more

West Coast Deck just finished a 6'x12' deck in our backyard and we highly recommend them. Jameson was super helpful when we were brainstorming ideas and picking materials. His experience and patience helped guide us to an end product we're really happy with. We picked Mahogony PVC decking by TimberTech. There were more options than we realized but Jameson helped us understand the pros and cons of different products and the price points within certain manufacturers. During installation, the West Coast Deck crew was respectful of our space and always kept it clean and safe. We have two young daughters so this was important to us. The attention to detail was also really impressive. Even though our deck is probably smaller than most of their projects, Jameson and his crew worked hard to make sure the deck exceeded our expectations. We're looking forward to enjoying the San Diego summer in our newly improved backyard. read more

DO NOT GIVE HIM MONEY. I was not going to write a review and waste my time on this guy BUT the same thing happened to someone else. I found him through FB which is probably my first mistake.... Then I gave him a deposit for a project that he continued to push back. Weeks go by and he continued to make up excuses. He finally said he would give me my deposit back but wouldn't. Last thing-- is that he used another companies photos and videos on Facebook as if they were his work. People like this should never have a business. We had been wanting to have some deck work done and to replace our existing wooden posts and railings. West Coast Deck was highly recommended. After reviewing Jameson Haslam's proposal, we selected West Coast deck for our project. Jameson and his crew did amazing work and we couldn't be more pleased! Jameson and his crew were consummate professionals. From their proposal, selection of new materials, construction and project completion, they kept us informed. The stair posts were each custom made and despite a minor fabrication delay, everything went well. We chose "Ipe" tropical hardwood, as our new decking surface and top rails. For the deck and stair posts, we selected white powder coated metal. Instead of going with the conventional cable railing we opted for solid #316 stainless steel rod, 3/8" in diameter. We're really pleased with the look of the white posts, Ipe top rail and stainless steel rod. Topping off the project is LED Lightning under the top rail. That provides a soft, warm glow to our deck at night. Our final product is gorgeous. If you are looking to construct a deck or just update your deck's surface material and it's looks we highly recommend Jameson Haslam and West Coast Deck. A couple of weeks ago I called multiple deck contractors most of whom I found on Yelp. While most of them never returned my call, West Coast Deck did. We scheduled an appointment for the rep (Jameson, I think) to come to our house to discuss our project. We had agreed to late Friday afternoon. On the afternoon of the appointment I receive a text that he was not going to be able to make it to the appointment and said we'd have to reschedule. On Wednesday the following week, after not getting contacted by him to reschedule, I texted him to do so. We agreed to meet late afternoon on Monday of the following week. This time he didn't even bother to text me that he couldn't make it, he just never showed up. A week has passed since then and I still haven't heard from him. Very unprofessional and inconsiderate of my time! I guess I should feel lucky that you ghosted me. If you are this unprofessional during the sales portion of the project it does not bode well for the execution of the project. Disaster averted I guess. read more

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. The owner seemed super nice at first, but took three months to come and finish the job he started, which was revamping our second floor deck. He and his workers were beyond sloppy (photos will show this), and all their work had to be redone by our contractor's team. In addition to sloppiness, the work was just unbelievably unsafe. Jameson did not have the proper gaskets to secure the glass to the rails, AND HE JUST LEFT IT LIKE THAT AND COLLECTED OUR $10,000!!! I then noticed another review that said he didn't have his license number up- so I checked on that and as of august 2023, there is no professional license associated with the owner Jameson. I found an old website that listed a different person's license number, so I looked him up and called him to complain about the unfinished and unsafe job. He was rude as well, but eventually finally came to finish the job that Jameson had started. Our contractor literally sat behind him and watched until it was done. All this is to say DO NOT under any circumstances use this sketchy, unsafe person. Words cannot do justice to how unsafe he left our house and when I confronted him about it via text, he tried to call me, so as not to leave any liability in writing. I have two young children who play on the deck who could have fallen right through the glass he neglected to secure and that makes my blood boil. read more

We hired West Coast Deck for our deck and fence work at our home in Del Mar. We interviewed several contractors and evaluated a bunch of different options before choosing them. We hired Jameson Haslam, owner of West Coast Deck approximately one year ago to build a deck in our canyon backyard. It was a massive disaster. Jameson started the work digging huge holes in our backyard and cut into two retaining walls without obtaining a permit we thought we paid for. His workers stopped showing up, leaving us with a mess. Jameson's excuse was, " I got in over my skis". We later learned Jameson did not have a contractors license and was using someone else's license which is illegal. We asked Jameson to repair the retaining walls and he refused. We hired an attorney and reported him and West Coast Deck to the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). To this date, Jameson Haslam and/or West Coast Deck does not have a contractor's license, workman's comp insurance or any insurance. DO NOT USE WEST COAST DECK!!!! read more
