They had all the lights off in the restaurant even over the tables at 5 pm. The server hovered over the table the whole time, pacing back and forth the entire time. We got a burger that we asked to be medium and it was fully cooked and was totally preheated in the back not made fresh. Look at a menu that includes breakfast staples, lunch & dinner staples, and maybe some sort of Italian dishes. 3. Order food. 4. Eat food. 5. Look at the dessert case. 6. So my husband and I just had lunch there. It was a very strange experience. My husband ordered a corn beef special the waitress didn't know what he was ordering. She asked to point it out on the menu. I ordered a French dip. We also ordered mozzarella sticks as an appetizer. It all came out at the same time. My French dip came out with a tasteless watery gravy the looked like dirty dish water. I explained this to the manager She went in the back and came out with beef gravy. Sadly, this place has gone massively downhill over the past twenty years. The decor is old and musty, the staff overworked/understaffed, and the food borderline rancid. I miss diners. I miss the 400 different menu options. The clank of dishes in the back. The smooth chrome and stone walls and floors. The padded booths and the huge tables. The bakery case right by the entrance, and the servers who call you "hon". Dining in the Age of Corona means takeout, means delivery, means sitting outside somewhere to eat. Sigh. Lion and I were on our way back from and errand in West Chester when he suggested we stop at The West Chester Diner for takeout. It's good, he said. You'll like it. So we pull into their parking lot, consult our phones and place an online order. 20 minutes, the app said. That's OK, we can chat and listen to a podcast or something. The diner is situated on PA-3, AKA West Chester Pike. It shares an entry driveway with an apartment complex behind and next door to it. There does not seem to be a ton of parking until you realize their lot stretches waaaay back behind the restaurant. Along the front they have a few patio tables with umbrellas for not-super-comfortable-looking outdoor dining. Me? I'd rent a big tent and use up some of that empty parking lot behind me. The time comes, and we walk into the diner. There are people in booths, every other booth is unavailable, the large buffet is empty, looking kind of sad, like it wants to give you salads with 50 different toppings and some hot roast beef to boot. The diner looked clean, a bit dark, or maybe it was just the sadness of that buffet. We were greeted quickly and our order was waiting. We had pre-paid so we took our items, the server/hostess cheerfully added whipped cream to my milkshake and we were off. Driving home was a tantalizing experience because the food smelled sooo good. I demolished my b & w milkshake on the drive back (vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, mmmmmmm). The food was well packed and easy to extract from packaging. Lion inhaled his omelette, diner breakfast food is his thing, he will order breakfast there any time of day, and they of course will serve it. He thought it was very good, lots of fillings, fresh, he even ate the hash brown potatoes, which he usually passes on. I got the BLT Club, because if I'm going to get something unique to diners, it's the club sandwich. It was very good, crisp bacon, fresh and flavorful tomato. My only 'meh' moment were the fries, which, admittedly, don't generally travel well. Still, these tasted a little off, like maybe it's time to change the deep fryer oil. This is a diner, not the Four Seasons. I love that it has a retro look. Reminded me so much of the restaurant in the Bazaar of All Nations, back in the day. It's obvious that it is family run. We were waited on by the owner. She was very nice and took care of us very well. Our food came out in about 10 minutes. I got blueberry pancakes. Fresh blueberries in them. Delicious. My husband got a vegetable quesadilla. He said it was the best he ever had. The restroom was very clean and smelled good. The place was pretty clean. We loved the eclectic decor. It's been a little bit since I came to dine in this establishment. I see why. The 1st thing I noticed, the server/waitress didn't give her name (rating already going down). She asked me what I would like to drink, and she then went to get that and returned. She asked if I was ready to order, placed my order didn't write anything down but went to the front of the checkout and repeated what I just ordered, had to correct the type of bread and the extra stuff I had requested. My order came to me, and the French fries didn't have the side of honey mustard. The sandwich didn't have extra mayonnaise. I know I'm not high sadity, but I WILL NOT settle for lowering my standards. If you don't want to go above and beyond your normal standards, then don't do a waitress job!!! I REALLY HATE having a piss poor service, and I will not bitch or complain. I WILL NOT give a good or even decent tip!!! The hot open faced turkey sandwich wasn't the worst thing in the world, but everything else was pretty close. This place needs a face lift real hard. It screams crappy diner as soon as you walk through the front door. This is a restaurant after all and we come for the food. Today, Tuesday 5/17/2022, 4:00ish, stopped in for an early dinner! It was not busy, but it was a great experience! Helen, who ran our table was attentive and happy to explain the specials as well as the soups of the day. Our table had the cream of mushroom and it was fabulous! Had to finish it before attacking the Ruben and fries! The corned beef was freshly sliced by hand, very good sauerkraut, Swiss was better than the Boars Head I order at the grocery. The fries may have been the coated fries, but they were cooked well, crunchy, golden brown, not greasy flavored. The fryer appears to be well maintained. The other member of the party had the Beef Stew special with onion rings, nice dinner rolls and rice pudding. I tasted the beef stew, and it was an ample portion in a gravy that was perfect in seasoning, consistency and texture! The beef was chunked well, the carrots shaved, potato's were chunked, EDIT: there are peas, my companion just did not notice, but as enjoyed the remains this morning, there are peas, rounding out the dish! ::Mea Culpa::. My companion told me the rice pudding was tasty, not too sweet, and just the right amount of whipped cream, it was gone in a hot minute! The location has banquet/large party abilities! I had a breakfast fit for a queen, pancakes and eggs and potatoes and sausage..it was all so good and a HUGE portion..my brother had an open face meatloaf sandwich and cleaned his whole plate! The price point is perfect for the amount of food & the staff is so friendly. I started coming pretty frequently while my friend is visiting for breakfast and they even started recognizing us. This place was the worse I have ever had. Ordered a crab cake sandwich and husband ordered eggs benedict . The crab cake didn't taste like a crab cake, the benedict had a bright yellow sauce on it. We both thought something is wrong, but since it was our first time there maybe they do things different. Had a great breakfast at 9:30 Tuesday night after losing at Volleyball for the 6th straight week. Just a bit too late for Nick's Roast beef, but when I saw the gleaming neon of the West Chester Diner I knew eggsactly what I was in the mood for! Breakfast! It was mostly empty, but there was a flow of people coming in, mostly college kids. Salad bar was loaded with stuff, including some hot soups...But I knew I wanted breakfast and went right to the bar to order it. Nancy was behind the bar and warmly welcomed me. Even gave me the remote to the TV so I could watch what I wanted! She was making some kind of cinnamon apple spice hot tea (for her boss) and it smelled so good I had her make me one too. Thanks Nancy! I went right to the breakfast specials and saw what I wanted at the bottom of the menu. Waffle\Egg special! 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage, and a waffle. Perfect! You even get the option to sub other breakfast meats but I went with it as listed. Eggs were very well cooked and very much "over easy". The bacon crisp, the sausage well browned, and the star of the show, the waffle, was delicious! I only wish they had better syrup than the little packs you get at most diners. Being a diner, you need to whach what you order...Here are my 2 cents on diner food... Breakfast? Yes! This is what diners are for! Lunch? Yes, not quite as enthusiastic as breakfast, but diners can do a decent lunch... Dinner? No! Order breakfast instead! Overall, I had a fantastic experience and will be going back, hopefully after we win a volleyball game.
