This is one of my favorite walking/bike trails around. It is mostly paved, but there are a few spots that are smalls rocks. Even on the rocky spots, it is still easy to walk/bike as it's pretty smooth. Some of the trail is covered in the woodsy areas, but it is mostly open. Love that parts of it are along the water. I like to start at mile 8.2. Although, the parking lot is small and can fill up quickly on a weekend morning. read more

I walked the West Ashley Greenway today after work sort of on impulse and I'm so glad I did! I had stopped by Staples to mail a package and the weather was amazing for a January late afternoon and I just started walking. I love the historical nature of it and how the city has created signs to teach you about the history. I walked about a mile and a half and then turned around and walked back. Lots of after school teenagers going on their run, families on bikes, and regular walkers like me! The West Ashley Greenway is a wonderful asset to our community. read more

I love the Greenway! I've ridden bikes on it, but mostly I walk or run. It's not too busy but there are enough people that I feel safe. There are so many birds to see on the Johns Island portion of the trail. I enjoy seeing Wood Storks, Roseate Spoonbills, Anhingas, herons, and more. There are several trailheads along the Greenway to park. The marsh views are spectacular! And it's free of charge. read more

I love this 8 mile long walkway that is tucked into the neighborhood and covered with trees. Great place to walk your dog, go running, or just take a scroll down the Greenway. If you drive over here, there are a handful of locations that you can park. At the top of the Greenway by Bees ferry, there is a designated parking lot that you can start at. I love going behind the fire station on 17 and parking in the parking lot next to the doctors office and walking over. There aren't a ton of trash cans along the Greenway so make sure if your dog does poop be prepared to carry it for a while. read more

This paved urban greenway cuts through some of Charleston's suburbia. Occasional public art displays dot the scenery, but besides occasional road crossings it seems largely a straightaway path with not a ton of razzle dazzle. That's not to say that pedestrian/bike infrastructure lacks value of course, as the path is much more pleasant than the surrounding roadways. read more

A great spot for exercise and nature in central West Ashley. Parts are busy, some near the end aren't paved, there's a mix of sunny and shaded areas, with lots of walkers, joggers, bikers and strollers being pushed in the more active areas. No motorized vehicles are allowed, and some areas are very remote from anything manmade with scenic views of the marsh and Stono River. read more

I live near the start of the Greenway so frequent often. It's very clearly marked and paved so makes for an excellent biking path. Definitely busy with runners, walkers, pets, etc so if you're someone who doesn't like crowded routes, maybe best to avoid or come early in the morning. read more

Great length, though they need good parking lots for more access. Also, the police should enforce stings at the crossings because cars will fly by while pretending to not notice you (extremely unsafe considering there is a school that is near one crossing)...skating can be a challenge heading closer towards downtown since the pavement is too rocky to ride on. Could be an even greater addition to activities and outdoor lifestyles for Charleston but it isn't really well thought out. Not to mention the public sidewalks to get here don't make it accessible to everyone. Charleston could do a lot better, and help create a safe crossing environment if they chose to help. read more

I started midway and parked by the elementary school (mile 4 marker). Little did I know it was the nicest stretch by the marsh and shaded. The first two miles were paved. Otherwise, you will need a hybrid or mountain bike. Plenty of joggers along the trail. This is a great asset for the area. In total, 8 miles from end to end. read more

We were getting tired of our normal walk locations for our furry friend Tater, so we switched it up and checked out West Ashley Greenway. I looked at some reviews before we checked it out so we knew where to park. We parked behind the shops across from the Earth Fare parking lot. There's plenty of parking in this shopping complex, so no need to worry about that. We went about a mile down and then turned around and we got pretty views of the marshes and neighborhoods along the Greenway. There were a lot of people out and about riding their bikes and running. Personally, I wouldn't want to walk this trail without a buddy and there's no lights at night, so be aware of that. Overall, it was a pleasant break from our normal city views and we will come back for more walks for sure! read more

The West Ashley Greenway is a great place to run, walk, or ride your bike. It starts on Wesley Drive, near the Earth Fare. There are mile markers, but they are slightly off (by .15 to be exact). There's always people out there running, biking, walking their dogs, etc, and I've always felt safe. If you go down toward the other end, there are trails, so be a little more careful and maybe take your phone with you for safety purposes. If you visit Charleston and need a place to run, this is your place, great running route! Also runs along Savannah Hwy so locals can walk, run, or ride their bike to stores like Earth Fare, K-Mart, or Harris Teeter. read more

I've been meaning to walk the WAG for a while now, and finally had some time to do it yesterday. It was a little tricky to find, because the trees block the entrance sign, but I parked at Earth Fare and found my way to the entrance. As mentioned by another reviewer, the mile markers (at least for the first two miles) are off by .15, so my two mile walk (one way) was actually 1.7 miles. The part of the trail that I walked on was very nicely paved, and as long as you stay to the right, you'll have no issues being run over by bikers or runners. Nice views along the WAG, both natural and residential. I was going to walk the entire WAG, but realized it was 7 miles (according to the estimated markers) and thought better of it. Came here to walk the dog, and it was a really nice venue for it. I heard it's about 7 miles long one way. Part of it is paved and other unpaved. It has several breaks in the path where you have to remember to stop for oncoming traffic. Lots of trees which offers some shade as you go. There are trash cans along the way which is perfect for dog droppings. The path is amazingly flat. Coming from Atlanta, I'm used to lots of rolling hills, so this reminded me of the Silver Comet trail in Mableton, GA. It was very peaceful here, and I saw walkers, runners, and bikers alike. FYI, it was a little difficult to find for me. I parked in the Starbucks/Earth Fare parking lot, and walked on the sidewalk around to the start of the trail. It's a bit hidden from the road, and I'm not so sure I'd want to come here running by myself if it was dark. But the Greenway serves a great purpose, and I love that it's not on concrete. read more

It's about 8 miles long and runs from Avondale to John's Island. You'll see lots of runners walkers bikers dogs and kids on the greenway. read more

A great little path to go for a jog, bike ride, or even just a place to walk around to clear your mind. You'll love this place! Dog friendly! There path is also good for long distance practice. Don't go at night though because the path is not lit at night!!! So be very careful read more

The further out you get from downtown the better the Greenway gets! We like to start all the way down off Main Road (like you are driving to Kiawah). The turn off for the Greenway is easy to miss but there are some signs. There is parking for about 10 cars in a gravel area. This part of the path is more desolate so you may want to bring a friend. (I've never felt unsafe but depending on personality and time of day some folks might.) There are no water fountains here so bring your own drinks. The trail is also not asphalt out this far so the bike ride can be bumpy but it is still very flat and great for kids. Nature is definitely busy at work we've seen crabs, herons, buzzards, hawks, fish. It is alive with activity and it feels refreshingly far from the real world. read more

I love that this is in West Ashley. There are parts of it that are just gorgeous! The more of these they can add to the area, the better! Some parts run by marsh land, some are tree covered canopies. A free way to enjoy the area! I also appreciate that you can start one part of it right by Earthfare and Starbucks. So grab a cup of joe and enjoy a nice stroll. read more

Inside of 526 is paved. Love jogging with my son in his stroller-it's a few miles, one way. There's a couple little playgrounds along the way too (one at Braxton Rd and one near the baseball field). Outside, past Wappoo Rd is gravel. Best part of the Greenway is out past near rd. You get some nice views the further you go! Bring your camera. read more

We take our children to and from school, the doctor, we do our grocery shopping and other activities by way of the Greenway. We also jog and work out along the Greenway. It's also a great place to walk the dog and catch up with neighbors! The local schools cross country and track athletes use the Greenway for workouts. Like the West Ashley Bikeway, the Greenway is a great place to bike or walk off the roads and sidewalks. The other yelps are great, so I can only add that this is not a bike path for road race-style cycling (few paths are, due to wanderers, kids, etc). Much of it, arguably the best parts out near Carolina Bay and Main Road, are gravel, and so that is good for a mountain bike or hybrid. There are some limited side trails as well. As with the Bikeway, the Greenway is great for slowing down on the bike, or cutting through from one area to another, enjoying the scenery of the woods, tidal creeks and marshes. read more

I've been running, walking, and cycling on this lovely greenway for years! It is a verdant place filled with birdsong in the mornings and quietude in the evenings. It passes through neighborhoods, marshlands, and tree-lined expanses. Fellow greenway users are very polite. There is only one water fountain on the whole thing, so bring water if you need to. read more

Overall this bike trail is poor. Some sections going west offer pristine marsh and creek views, but going east is a buzzkill. Narrow gates, many streets to cross, and these sections are asphalt surface, crowded with walkers and walkers with baby strollers, and slow beach cruisers. I'd avoid this if it were me.
