This is a beautiful place to walk by the water and enjoy a cool breeze, even on the steamiest summer days! The exhibit about the origins of the Naval weapons stations is really cool.. my son loves the models of the battleships and submarines. There are plenty of swings.. an awesome playground for the kiddos and even a fun fountain for the kids to play in. The bathrooms are always clean and open. It has been a long time since the wife and I were around the navel base area, and what they have done to transform that area is remarkable. There is a short paved walk along the river, with benches, swinging benches, and some odd-looking seating as close to the river as you can get. Beyond that, we walked around the entire grounds, where large Spanish moss oak trees provide great shade, even in the middle of the day. There weren't clear directions where to walk, so we just went wherever paved streets and walkways took us. At one end of the park, you will find a memorial, with placks outlining the history of the base. On the other end, you will find a very unique bridge that looks like it will lead to future park areas currently being worked on. They even have an excellent restaurant (MOMOs), smack dab in the middle of the park. MOMO's is a slightly upscale, yet casual restaurant, with good food, as well as In and outside dining. The outside dining offers sweeping views along with more large live oak trees. If you are looking for something faster and cheaper food options, there are always rotating food trucks in front of what I believe is the Charleston Naval complex. Some of the large homes, like the Admiral quarters, are massive southern-style homes that would easily fit in downtown Charleston Our first full circle pass of the park was about 2 miles. Riverside is a great place to wander around after lunch in Park Circle. There is a bridge that connects the two. The Park is (obviously) on the water plus there are lovely old homes scattered amongst the live oaks that used to be navy officer homes and now are various different purposes- but still lovely. The brick work that comprises the pavement in the parking lot speaks of class and real investment, perhaps a pattern of the past. It had to cost a pretty penny. The natural approach is to walk toward the water, which we did but after a full exploration we circled all around the premesis, there is much to see opposite the water as well. Getting ahead of myself a bit. Waterfront are two beautiful stately old double floored oxford white buildings, in mid to late renovation stage. The Assembly building and what once was the hospital at the turn of the century, read the slanted signs, I promise you'll be transported if you really want to. Twenty yards forward, antistic outdoor sculpture garden blends land to sea. A garden of stone, slate and iron sit amongst the greenery that lies just before the wooden walkway, it felt meditative as a hint of wind passed through the tree branches above. Continue to the right and although the proper name evades me, the naval base it once was is beautifully memorialized in a few distinct sections. Walk toward the wailing wall, reflecting water trough will lead you in the correct direction, trust the flow of the designers. Ships of three different class quarter circle as a bit of protection from the sea, its the first and last exhibit. Minus the front side of the bronze sailor looking out to sea -- as if he was just dropped off but did not wish to readily disconnect with the life he was leaving. The wooden walkway has a relaxing winding flow, the tiny shore breaks crashing upon the rocks below and continued to evoke that meditative feeling. Walk slowly. The far water facing left end holds host to musical acts, so the pictures tell me --- the large grassy flat land is outdoor concert perfect. I hope one day to be here to sit and enjoy one. Here at Riverfront Park holds the best mudsized dog park in Charleston. Best supplied with bags, best fluffed with bark (appropriate) and pune straw, doggie obstacles, picnic tables and unique individual watering stations for our pups. Continue up the hill and see the homes of which I speak. No park with exhibits in my memory offers as much as Riverside does at no cost to the visitor. read more

I love that I live so close to this area. I have been there for just walking to clear my mind as well as for concerts and other events. The space is larger than it looks. It is pretty well maintained, although it can be muddy with some flooded areas after it rains. The mosquitoes are ridiculous, so be sure to bring bug spray if it is post rainstorm. There is art all around the grounds, with notes of what it is called and the artist that created it. There is a memorial toward the beginning, just to the right of the fountains as you walk in. The dog park is small, but not bad for an hour or so of letting your pupper run around. There are picnic tables and grills nearby the playground and gazebo area. The bathrooms are small and kind of dirty, but they work for what they're intended for. There is also a water fountain so you can fill up your water bottle. These are located near the concert stage area. I recommend Riverfront Park as an area to walk around, get some fresh air and just think. read more

I come here all the time but not to visit the park itself. I'm sure it's a great park but I love coming here for concerts. Over the past years, Riverfront Park has become the go-to outdoor venue for all the best concerts and festivals. You really can't beat the destination. It got plenty of empty parking lots nearby (sometimes it's a bit of a walk), it's already a beautiful spot because it's a county park, and it's on the freakin' Cooper River! I check out pretty much all of the summer concert series including Rebolution last night, some one off things here and there, and I've gone to High Water the past two years here. Generally there's food at all these events but stopping at the Codfather on the way is always a great idea! read more

This old Navy base has cleaned up nicely, and Riverfront Park is a nice alternative to the parks downtown. It's a real asset to those of us near North Charleston. The park has amenities such as bathrooms, parking, and walking paths, and it's a great place to walk, run, or have a picnic. You have beautiful views of the Cooper River as well as unique sculptures and art. Lately, a lot of events have popped up in Riverfront Park- everything from 5K races and yoga classes to concerts. Sometimes there's a cost involved, but sometimes things are free, and the City of North Charleston has provided a list of them in the park (in a glass case) that changes out each week. read more

Be sure to check out the Naval Memorial to the thousands that served at the Charleston Naval Base over the decades, plus two impressive statues named the Lone Sailor and the Homecoming. I recently attended the beer festival at this beautiful park. And, to be honest, I don't make down that way very much because I live in Summerville. But, the park is definitely a real gem with gorgeous views and very close to a number of great restaurants and a couple breweries as well. There's plenty of grassy areas for people and pets, with a long dock and boardwalk that runs along side the historic Cooper River. And a few years ago , we had family pictures there that turned out quite nice, with views of the bridge, river and sunset along the river. read more

I've been here on several occasions for concerts and also just to walk my dog. The location has a great view of the river and has a lot of space to roam around if you have a dog or kids in tow. There are sculptures scattered throughout the park and there are also two piers to stand on or to do some fishing. There is also a fountain area made for kids to run and play in. I usually see a few families there with kids in bathing suits playing when I go. It's free to come here so it's a good place for entertaining kids if you're on a budget. As for a concert venue, I attended the High Water Festival here and it was great. There was ample space for vendors and food and a lot of room to lay blankets and sit down. Definitely a good location for concerts or music festivals. One downside to using this area for this purpose is that it does take a few days to a week for the park to get completely cleaned up. After the music festival I took my dog to walk here and he managed to find and eat some leftover scraps of food on the grass. Overall this place is a nice spot to visit if you're looking for a quieter and less traveled park than the ones downtown that are waterside. Definitely check it out if you have the time. read more

It's a little unusual to find, if you drive from the city, you'll pass a lot of freight loading sites and old worn down industrial buildings, rather beautiful and a side of Charleston you don't see in the city. Once you arrive, you'll be greeted by overhanging trees with Spanish Moss, and cosy up next to the park, which is located next historic homes once occupied by Naval officers. From the park, enjoy views of the Cooper River, mashes, as well as a beautiful bridge view. You'll walk along sculptures (which are for purchase!) and admire the Naval Memorial. Riverfront Park is quiet but definitely a gem, a beautiful spot for art lovers, nature lovers and of course kids (they have a fountain you can run through). I took my students here on a field trip and they all had a blast! The playground is very unique and somewhat challenging in that it caters to balance and strength when playing on it. The kids enjoyed the challenge. There is also a covered pavilion with picnic tables right next to the play structure, which provided lots of shade on such a hot day. The ground were incredibly well cared for. The children loved looking at the sculptures and artwork on display under the trees and throughout the park. The setting is also very beautiful...right on the water with an amazing view of the Don Holt bridge and the huge cargo ships going by. To cool off, the kids played on the splash pad. They had a blast playing in the water and exploring the nearby war memorial, which offered a great teaching moment. We ate lunch on picnic tables near the parking lot under huge, beautiful oak trees, surrounded by a garden. It was a lovely experience for all of us! On the trip, we noticed lots of lights around the trees, sculptures, and splash pad. I'd like to rerun sometime at night to see how beautiful it all must look after dark. There is an amphitheater on the property, so I have it on my local bucket list to see a nighttime show there, now! read more

Located on the former Naval Base, this park opened in July 2005. It's a fantastic public park (established by the City of North Charleston) along the Cooper River. To me, it's one of the best parks in the Charleston region (along with Waterfront Park downtown and the Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park in the shadow of the Ravenel Bridge). About a quarter of the park is for the Navy Base Memorial (on the far southern end of the park). This includes a boardwalk along the river, benches, lots of informational displays about the history of the former Charleston Navy Base, three models of Navy ships once found at the base, and water features. There are also several old Naval buildings along the perimeter of this area along with a variety of grand live oaks. There is an expansive grassy area beyond that is great for picnics. Scattered throughout, there are pieces of modern artwork on display. There's also more boardwalk along the river plus a pier. At the far northern end of the park is a pavilion for concerts, a hill for climbing, and a picnic shelter. There's also a playground there. Thankfully, there are public restrooms at both ends of the park. There's free public parking near the park entrance. This is a spectacular park that is definitely worth a visit! After visiting the park, I highly recommend taking a walk/drive around the nearby historic Naval houses and other buildings. This entire area is on the National Register of Historic Places. The landscape of this area is inspiringly beautiful! read more

This is one of my favorite spots in Charleston. It's off the beaten path and super quiet. They have a dog park there and beautiful grounds. You can walk your dog there and they have some concerts there as well. Although I have never been to the concerts I heard it was one of the best venues in Charleston. Nice expansive waterside park. There are some sculptures throughout to enjoy a well as an outdoor instillation documenting the history of the naval yards for history buffs. An on-site eatery for lunch and a pint of one wishes to relax. Adjacent to the park are numerous abandoned naval quarters for those liking to view such things. All in all a nice place to spend a couple hours. read more

Very pretty once you find it. We drove all over that place with the directions constantly changing. It's a lot of warehouse type buildings and abandon building feel and look in this area (not sure if they are in not familiar with this area), so it's kind of not appealing when first looking for the park and almost gave up. We just moved here to Charleston. Roads aren't well marked and you seriously think you're going into no where. But we kept on and glad we did. Hidden and tucked away with water as a frame. The memorial park areas are very humbling and makes you so grateful to be here. Well kept and presented, the walk was peaceful. Lots of room for frisbee and catch or fishing off the peers. It was quiet and had friendly families and people off enjoying the day. There isn't much in the way of parking, but wasn't a problem when we were there during an off time of the week. It was also being set up for 4th of July so the entrance was fenced off. read more

This is the best kept non-secret in the greater Charleston area. This is one of the most amazing parks I've ever been to, definitely my favorite park in Charleston. The park is located off the beaten path right on the Cooper River banks with cool views of the river, the Don Holt bridge, and the dry docks where large ships are fixed/built. There are always enough people around that if you want to say "Hi" to your neighbor, you can, but not so many people around that you can't avoid all human contact if that's your mood. For starters, it's on the old golf course for the closed down Naval base and has a really well done memorial/tribute to all those service men and women who served there. You turn right at the water feature to get to it. I missed it the first time I went, so be sure to check it out. My uncle who was stationed here in the late 70's cried when he saw it. There's a great mix of boardwalk trails along the river bank, piers that stick out into the water (where you can fish/crab/shrimp from) and sidewalks that wind around the park. The water feature is great for kids of all ages to splash around in, and the dog park has agility obstacles, fresh water, and lots of poop bags. It's one of the cleanest dog parks ever, so it's sad how few dogs I see there. My niece and nephews rank the playground highest amongst the Park Circle playgrounds, and if playgrounds aren't your kids' thing, there's a grass hill they can roll down. Heck, why not do both? I love all the perfectly manicured gardens, variety of seats/swings taking advantage of all the different views, and the rotating sculpture installations the Arts Department manages. If there were a concert at the stage, I would attend. And lastly, there's tons of just open grass space for cartwheels, kiting, or burpees. What more could you want from a park? And if you're lucky, you'll catch a giant shipping container floating down the river as the sun set brings in a perfect breeze... read more

Riverfront Park in North Charleston is one of my favorite parks in the Charleston area. I can remember when this was a golf course on the former Navy base and I like that they kept all of the open green space in its current form as a park for all to be able to enjoy as just a day in the park or as an event space for an event or concert venue. This park is well maintained and is fun to walk or run around for some fresh air. This park has wonderful views of the river and water and has plenty of cool art pieces, gardens, markers, and other displays that add to the experience of the park. I really need to go to more events here. I've been to a couple now. It's absolutely gorgeous on the riverfront. Ample green space to bring a blanket and chill out listening to some great music for concert events. I know they hold all types, but I've mostly been for music events. They have plenty of space for food truck vendors so you'll have many choices to decide from if they decide to provide that kind of thing for the event at hand. I also went to a beer festival there not too long ago and it was awesome. Excited for more events to come here. read more

I've been to two concerts here and both were fantastic! I saw Rebelution and Slightly Stoopid this year and it was a lot of fun! The grounds are beautiful on the Navy base in North Charleston and Riverfront Park is right on the water. Each concert had plenty of food offerings and local vendors. Of course the beer tents and vip sections were easily accessible. Plenty of space for blanket watching or getting up close in the action for a concert. Highly recommend it! read more

Went last night for Goose. Show was great. Facility is wonderful, right on the water, big container ships rolling by. Gorgeous. The space is huge, tons of space to stretch out and relax. And the sound system for Goose was excellent. Loud, rich and full. Loved it. Here's the bad part: the beer selection was atrocious. One craft beer, wicked weed pernicious ipa. Which sold out in under an hour. The only other beer was bud light. After that, 4 different flavors of bud light seltzer. Please, replace one or two of the seltzer's with some variety. I'm not asking for a bunch of craft nerd beers. I'm asking for anything. The Southern Eagle portfolio has plenty of options. 4 different flavors of bud light seltzer is ridiculous. I hope someone in authority reads this. read more
