Unless you're a bigger party, I recommend paying the extra amount for a private window seat for 2 otherwise you'd be seated with strangers. It comes with a 4 course meal, and there's a bar on the boat but that's extra. We were shown to our seats right when we boarded and then Kevin was our waiter, super nice. We departed at 7pm and Kevin let us know our first meal would be arriving around 7:30 so we had time to go up to the observation deck. It was very windy but it was still cool to see us leave port and go out to the Charleston Harbor which was nice. There's a covered area in the back and then it's open at the front and that was definitely windy. The meals were so good, we honestly said the food was probably the best food we had on our whole trip! It started off with a she crab soup which was yummy. Second meal was a salad with sweet salad dressing that was also great. Third meal you got to pick your entree, I did the braised short rib that came with mashed potatoes and green beans. My husband did the grilled salmon with same sides. Both were absolutely delicious. I could've eaten it all but wanted to save room for dessert. I did the chocolate torte and my husband did the cheesecake, again so delicious. We also added the bubbly package which was an extra $35 but since it was a special occasion it was worth it. She explained how this would go. 7:15 we will serve the bread, at 7:30 they will serve the first course a She-crab soup, ohh so good with a kick of cayenne delicious, oh by the way Barbara asked our table "who would like more soup we all said yes except wifey she's watching her salt intake and weight. next 2nd course cranberry almond kale Prosecco vinaigrette excellent, also saw into kitchen how each salad was prepped and dressed. Then we were told after the 2nd course there would be a 15-20 minute break for us to go take in the view and atmosphere of our sailing. Then we all received our entrees. My wife had the Braised Beef Short-ribs served with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The beef was so tender if there was a bone it would have fallen off of it. I couldn't come to Charleston and not try the shrimp and grits which had andouille sausage and country ham. If you don't like spicy do not order this.. fortunately I Love spicy. John's storytelling alone was worth the trip. The sordid history of slavery was framed in a context that made it feel personal, digestible, and meaningful to the listener. At least it felt that way to me. Hearing the stories before walking through the cabins, I could just feel the moment in history... rather than reading and digesting paragraphs on paragraphs of historical accounts on the walls while inside such a historical space. The nature tram tour and the animal conservatory ended up being the icing on the cake. It was beautiful to see and be immersed in all of the nature. The only drawback is that the main house tours were booked up and we didn't learn that until we got there. It worked out for us because I would much rather have had the slavery history tour and our time was already limited. All in all, this place is a must see (especially in April, when the azaleas are in bloom)!

Touring the Magnolia Plantation was a highlight of our trip to Charleston. We went with a small…read moretour group (12 people) we signed up at the Charleston visitor center so all three tours and transportation to and from were included in the price. We had the House tour which was very well done, interesting and educational. Throughly enjoyed it. We also did the tram tour through the property which we enjoyed a lot. The path was dry so we did get a dusty ride. In hindsight if the trail could have been lightly watered down to help with the dust this ride would have been much more enjoyable. The best of the three tours was the "Slavery to Freedom" tour. John was incredible telling the story of slavery and more importantly what these people went through. It was so educational hearing the story (instead of dates,) but emotionally moving. It made me realize that the history books used when I was in school were so generic and lacking any kind of detail and real life experiences these people went through. Seeing the slave houses with our hearing John's presentation would not have anywhere near the effect of seeing them after his presentation. John brought the real life detail to us. I told John that he should record his presentation and send a copy to every history school teacher in America. If you only go to one tour at the Magnolia Plantation, definitely go to John's "Slavery to Freedom" presentation.

He also mixed in lots of hands-on learning, letting anyone on board touch or hold the crabs and fish he pulled from the traps or the many artifacts he had on board. We were also encouraged to give his sweet dog lots of petting and attention. He made sure to give us enough time to enjoy the fascinating and beautiful sites along the way - including a large pod of feeding dolphins. The stop at the island was magical and a great way to break up the journey. We enjoyed a little picnic and taking a long walk along the beach. We also appreciated the great information that we were given in advance about what to bring and expect. All in all, this was a wonderful experience!

We weren't sure what…read moreto expect because the weather was rainy, so we chose an inshore, but he has several boats for offshore, near shore, and eco type excursions. Captain Dustin was in contact with us to adjust times based on the tides, which ensured us a great time catching fish! You can't just book a fishing trip based on schedule, it has to be based on tides which change by an hour every day. So he adjusted it for us. All four of us caught several nice sized Red Drum and Black drum and a sting Ray. He baited our hooks, put us onto fish and we had a great time and it was a memorable day for my adult kids and me.
