I used to go here every Friday starting in 2013. Not so much since they jacked up the prices. I still go once, sometimes twice a month. When you go as often as I do, you get to know the waitresses. Last night it was great to see Brenda and Christina. Clearly the hardest workers.. The newer, younger waitresses just don't have the "hustle" mentality to serve the customers. Maybe they're only there as a favor to a friend. Who knows? My stars are for Brenda, Christina and the wings. The fifth star comes back when the prices come back to reasonable levels. My husband wears a Wendell's shirt. He goes a few times a month for lunch. He talks about it and during the pandemic he was crazing their wings. I have never had it. We needed to get out of the house so we went for a drive. I will be honest, I tried ordering from a restaurant I like down the road but couldn't get through so wings that night was my 2nd choice. I had their regular wings- boneless with fries. I do not like hot stuff. My heat meter is pretty low (I would die on Hot Ones!) and these were for regular hottier than I could handle. I am very definately a fan of these small but perfectly fried crispy wings. They sell them by the pound. You will get about 9 or 10 pieces mix flat n drums. Not sure if you can order either or. Trust me you will gnaw at the gristle ends like a dog. It was a TUE and I went first to Bog Island for a few beers. I crossed the street and around 7 I entered. I was glad it was not busy. I guess I hit it on the right night. Several tables of folks and a group playing darts and a half filled bar. The place is exactly the same as it was when I was here 16 years ago. Once a dive always a dive. Oh the men's room was a slight bit spiffier. It was clean. The wings are as several people have mentioned the real and only draw here unless you live nearby and want to sit at the bar as I did and shoot the breeze about the Sox or the Pats while sucking down a few Buds. Good friendly sports fans here and I had a great time with them. A few domestics on draft but the only thing close to craft was Sam Summer. They actually went down pretty well. I didn't get the fries but the guy next to me did and he gave me a few. Pretty crispy crinkled and good. I dragged them through the sauce. Way better than ketchup. The 3.65 wing sauce I got is the medium. It's got decent kick but not a burn that will prevent you from tasting the meat or that you will pay for in the morning. I loved them then and loved them now. If I had a straw I would have zupped up what remained. The only sauce that compares to this for me is the Thirsty Turtle in Juno Beach FL. My Florida friends will know what I mean. If your a wingnut it is worth the drive, (not from FLA LOL) say from Boston or Providence. Keep in mind it's cash only and usually much busier than when I was there. Also expect to wait 30 minutes to an hour if busy as the kitchen and capacity to pump them out is small. Zolak mentioned them the other day on his sports show. The man has good taste. read more

I hate that I have to rate this place a 3. It's a staple. The wings are tiny but they usually give you a good portion. The sauce goes by heat level not by flavor which for some is an awesome perk and for most the main reason they go there. As I am more about flavor the heat factor doesn't play a huge roll in why I come here. The flavor of the sauce is pretty good but I've had better. The atmosphere is ok. Super loud and messy as hell when its busy. If you can find a seat at their small bar then I'd recommend that as there only ever seems to be one or two people working the floor and it can take a while for you to get anything. Not sure how many years they've been in business but between the decor and one fryer means this Fries taste like fish.... and you're going to wait a very very very long time... don't order more then one thing... they can't handle a main /side at the same time. You get your fries first then 30 minutes later your wings. Good flavor but way over cooked. Some of the wings tasted /felt more like jerky. Waitress was nice and boasted about how they were rated highly as top 6 or 7 but I would give them a 3 and that's being kind. Waitress at the bar was nice and friendly enough. It was 11am, not busy and I came In to get take out to try since people said it was good. The mild sauce is called " sissy sauce", maybe the jackass who owns the place thought it was funny, I really don't give a shit. So anyways, the cook or the bartender screwed up the order and to compound it they stuck the blue cheese and ranch in the packages with the wings so they were covered in oil and crap so you had to clean them off to take them out and they over cooked the boneless so badly the ends were unable to be eaten. The bone in was " I like my wings crispy but this is redonk". A little birdy told me they have some of the best wings here. That bird was right! Really tasty and crunchy wings. We got the regular sauce and the sissy sauce. Both were good but the sissy sauce was really a bit too tame and buttery. I would opt for something spicier next time. Excellent potato skins as well with a great potato flavor. They need to find a way to cook and deliver their wonderful wings faster. 2nd visit I ordered the Double Dares. Definitely the hottest wings I have ever had. Now I can say "been there done that". The second time, we ordered on our way home to pick them up. Still had to wait after 45 minute drive. Got home and the wings were just about average. I hadn't been to Wendell's in years. But when I walked in, it was like visiting an old friend. I love the wood paneling and feeling that you've stepped back in time. We got there early on a Friday evening, so it was easy to snag a table. Ordered a pitcher of beer, two order of wings and a basket of fries. Wings were good. Fries were crispy and beer was cold. I drove about 25 minutes to Wendell's so my brother could try the double date wings. He had heard they were pretty hot and the wings there were good. I beg to differ. The wings were nice and crispy, but they didn't have much meat on them and were also very greasy. I got about 9 wings for $8.75 and couldn't even finish them. My friend also ordered the penne pasta and it looked terrible. The garlic bread was just torn apart and thrown on her plate. I know this is just a little dive bar that probably only locals go to but cmon, a little presentation can't hurt. The icing on the cake was when the waitress brought over the shakey cheese still in the plastic jar from the market! Wait am I eating at a restaurant or at home?? The decor is very dated. The bathroom doors had no locks on them. One door doesn't even open all the way because the toilet gets in the way. You have to be pretty thin to squeeze into that cubicle. There were flies everywhere in the dining area as well. There is a bar but they do not have much on tap, also no beer prices on the menu. Seems to be a war of reviews here about this joint, with both sides passionately entrenched. Those who love Wendell's are hellbent on praising and defending it. Those who've had poor experiences are just as intent on ripping it shreds. I hope this review comes across as balanced. Been to Wendell's 3 times. A few years back my wife & I heard the hype, headed over around 7:30 on a Thursday night. Turns out they were closing the kitchen. Website said Kitchen open til 10, Bar til 11. Disappointing, sure. So we ordered beers while we thought where else to go. No go. They'd just given last call. In the bright, summer evening they were shutting down before 8. Went to nearby Alberto's, had some super spicy wings and went home happy. Next attempt was a year or two later when kids were older, liked spicy food and heard their friends raving about Wendell's. So we tried a Saturday afternoon. Success!! Sort of. The place was 1/4 full and our waitress was kinda cranky. Ordered a variety of spice-levels, regular, extra spicy and suicidal (son dared me). Surprisingly, it took 45 min for the food to arrive. A lot of time with kids but we managed. Wings were small but definitely fried well. Crisp outside, not too dry inside. Regular spice was great - good as any. The extra spicy tasted the same, but hotter. And "pastier" like they just added dry cayenne to boost the heat. Suicidal wings followed suit - nothing new in flavor. Just more hot pepper powder. Got to eat at Wendell's finally! But it was a let down. Especially when the bill shows you were charged for the blue cheese dressing. Isn't that a standard inclusion? Third time, June 2019: Kids are older and love buffalo wings and heat. Friends' still raving about Wendell's. Went on a late Saturday lunch, around 2 PM. 2 other tables were occupied, 6 people at the bar. An older guy started us with a drinks - sodas all around. Took 10 minutes to get them. A younger girl came by a few minutes late to take our order. Both servers were absolutely friendly and welcoming. We ordered and waited. 30 minutes later, my fish sandwich came ( I didn't feel like risking the wings). By itself. The kids' food was still cooking. 5 minutes later our side of onion rings arrived, so the kids dove into those. Finally, 15 more minutes,* the wings came out. Like years before, extra spicy meant buffalo with extra ground chile. Having been to so many other joints for wings the kids were fully unimpressed. As for the boneless wings? Don't order boneless wings at Wendell's. Dry as heck and your next drink won't come fast enough. I understand loyalty to a local favorite. I get people getting whipped up into the hype. It's not about the money wasted - Wendell's is just not worth your time. And it's not a food snob thing. If you only ever had Wendell's, I'd understand why you think they have the best wings ever. Have heard about Wendell's for years & over the last year especially & driven by quiet a few times. Finally decided to head in on a weekend afternoon for a late lunch. It's easy to drive right by unless you know where it is. Almost looks like a house of sort. Walking in there are booths & tables in a small dining area w a ATM which is good bc the place is cash only. Through the back is a small bar area that maybe seats dozen or so & two table tops for two or three customers. Menu is small & simple, the draw is the wings but they serve other apps and stuff as chili etc. I'm here strictly for the wings. They come only as buffalo with different degrees of hot. I opted for the "Sissy" bc buffalo kills me. Sissy still has a nice little hot to it. Comes w plenty of blue cheese as well. The wings were perfectly cooked. Nice and crispy. I believe they only use two fryers and re use the oil to give it its taste and crisp. Very good. But with that it may take a while for the wings. So have patience. Everyone around me at the bar had a basket of fries w their wings so after placing my wing order I asked to add in a basket of fries. Crinkle cut fries & they were delicious. Hot crispy and just perfect compliment to the hot wings. Service was friendly and they have a full bar w a few draft options. Wendell's is definitely a spot worth driving to for any wing nut.
