This is your classic old school spot. May not be the prettiest place in the world BUT this has some of the best wings I've had in New England period. I would put them up even against the legendary Duff's in Buffalo NY (IYKYK) These wings wow. HOT, crispy, full of flavor! Not crazy in size but they just hit like an old school chicken wing. The fries were your normal Krinkle cut fellas, and probably the most unique potato skin? Yes they came like that. Should be called build your own? Haven't been to Wendell's in years!! I was slightly disappointed d that they no longer had the variety of wing flavors (used to love the salt n vinegar ones). We got the medium spiced wings which were flavorful and tender. The kale soup was so good!!! Really hearty! Lots of potatoes, meat, kale and the flavor was spot on!! We have gone to Wendell's many times over the years for the wings. A bowl of wings is just enough along with a beer or two to fill you up. I tend to prefer the 3.5 and my wife the regular. Our kids enjoyed the milder ones. Simple place, cash only, not a fancy spot but the wings are worth it. They appear smaller and I am told that this is because of how hot they cook them, which removes the water and makes the chicken wings look smaller. Compare this to a moist / slimy wing and this is better. It can get loud inside and it is a bar room atmosphere so as you would expect it can be noisy. Nice people and good service. For sure a tired looking place (my seat had several strips of black duck tape). Our waitress was nice and it seemed she was the only one taking care of the whole place (???). The wings are a 3.5 in a 5 point scale. Small, crispy and coating was tasty. I know that prices have gone up everywhere, but could not believe each small blue cheese tub was $2.50. Actually, the waitress asking us if we wanted blue cheese should have tipped me that there was a charge; usually blue cheese comes with this type of wings. Ok so I'm going to be brutally honest about Wendell's since I've been coming here for over 10+ years... I'm not sure I would recommend this place for any new customers as the service is good, but very, very slow due to this place just being understaffed, but always filled with customers. Because they don't have the proper amount of staff it can look a little dirty sometimes as you will literally see trash on the floor and it takes them forever to clean it up because it's so busy. My main issue with restaurants in general have always been bad service and cleanliness, which this place does lack, but even with all that these wings are still the best around! Prices are good and the owner who mainly is working the bar and making sure everything goes smoothly does a great job with the customers coming to pickup their takeout orders and the customers around the bar. Took advantage to finally try WENDELLS in Taunton. You walk in a the joint is a dive. Grab a seat and check out thee affordable and simplistic menu. The wait service was nice enough. The prices are great but up charge for fries and sauces. The chicken is what we came for, buffalo and garlic butter with fries and blue cheese sauce. They specialize in serving the best Buffalo-style wings I have eaten outside of western New York. Wendell's wings have become the yardstick I measure all Buffalo-style wings against. The best-kept secret about Wendell's wings is that they owe their superiority to their relatively small size. That's right: frying up big, meaty wings is a culinary mistake. The larger your wings are, the more difficult it is to control their temperature, resulting in uneven cooking. Besides that, the large, burly wings you get in many places are not natural, and are typically the result of hormones and genetic modification. Purely from a taste and texture perspective, you want Buffalo wings to be small so they have a higher ratio of flavor-concentrated skin, fat, and cartilage (i.e. the "good stuff") to meat. Each wing was a one bite wing- very much not what I would come to expect from this pub after 10+ years of patronage. As many of the reviews have shared, this is a famous Hometown-pub, with award-winning wings, that people do in fact travel far and wide to enjoy. One silly catch about Wendells, is that called the pub prefers to serve wings very much on the smaller side. . Generally, this makes for a really satisfying wing experience, as the wings are cooked through, slightly crunchy, and have very little cartilage whatsoever. I called the pub when they re-opened after New Year's, to explain that I was very familiar with what to expect from the wings, and that the last few orders I have got were abnormally small... I spoke to a bartender on the phone who shared with me that Wendells serves small wings, and when I communicated with her how long I had been a patron, she shared with me that the owner was now spending extra money to get these new wings because they were so much smaller. My tldr "too long didn't read" version of this review ; Wait staff has confirmed that Wendells is now paying extra for smaller wings, that offer no improvement from the previous wings, and substantially less meat. and by the way the price has increased a little less than a dollar.
