I've been there a couple of times and they break one of my golden rules for a good wing place. You need either cheap beer or cheap wings. They don't offer either. I believe the waitress actually warned us on the cost of the pitcher of beer the first time I went so we wouldn't be surprised when the check came. However, if you like hot, spicy wings, this is right in your wheelhouse. I haven't gone out for a wings-only meal since college (about 9 years) so I am a bit out of practise. They offer 5 levels. The first is no sauce. The 5th is the hottest. We ordered the 3rd sauce, and I needed to drink a cup of beer with each wing. I've heard about Wendell's for years and finally made the trip. I asked how many wings per order (it's not listed on the menu) and was told that each order consists of 1 lb or about 10 wings. I placed an order for 2 servings of wings with a 1/2 and 1/2 mix of sassy and spicy and a basket of fries. While the sauce was fantastic, these were the tiniest wings I've ever eaten, I could have had about 10 more. Thin, anorexic wings are very unattractive. The basket of crinkle fries were obviously frozen and had been sitting under a warning lamp for quite some time, chewy and dense. Sadly enough, Wendell's is a "one and done" stop for me. read more

My wife and I are patrons of this place. She introduced me to the joint back in 2007. My first impression was cash only, long wait; smells like mushrooms and everyone looks like they want to hurt me. I ordered the sissy suicidals because I can't take the heat. My wife loves her mouth on fire so she ordered the 3.5. I was immediately impressed with the flavor of the sissies. They definitely had a distinct flavor compared to my wife's spicy, but good tasting wings and they had a mild kick which I like. They do charge you extra for blue cheese but that's because customers would take advantage and ask for multiple containers and that kills profits, this place ain't Google. The service is a bit overwhelmed and they have only one cook but we prepare for that. As we continued to return and became a familiar face the service got better and they definitely take care of their own. If you expect to get your ass pampered when you walk in the door than go to Capital Grill. If you expect to get immediate service than go to McDonald's. If you expect the bartender to smile at you than you better look hot. Otherwise, leave your feelings at the door and just take it all in. read more

The first thing that comes to mind when i think about my recent visit to wendell's is the "over-rated!" chant from a college sporting event. After seeing the wings at wendell's featured on phantom gourmet, we decided to take a detour while running errands this past weekend. We walked into a dive bar with seat yourself tables and decor that hasn't been updated since the 80's. We were greeted by a waitress who looked as if she's worked there since the last time the decor was updated. Wings come by the pound, 8-12 per order and the sauces are basically all the same, just different levels of heat. We decided on two orders, the mild garlic and the classic buffalo. We also got onion rings and fries. they are very clear about there being a "wait" for the food, but it took almost an hour - a bit ridiculous for sub-par food. Then, we took one look at the wings and they were very small - barely any meat on them. The sauce, while flavorful, was very thin, so it didn't stick to the wings very well. The fries were good once we added salt, as were the onion rings. Cash only, and $50+ for the above mentioned food, a soda and a couple beers. Overall, Wendell's was forgettable, run down, and not worth the 40 minute drive. Rounding up, because I feel like being nice, but this place really is a solid 2.5. We should've made a special trip to buff's pub - their wings blow Wendell's out of the water. read more

I have heard about the wings here for years and I finally made it there to try it out. The wings were pretty good, not the best I have had but pretty good. Everything we had was cooked well. Being a first timer here I had not idea about the seating situation. Do you wait, do you seat yourself, do you join other people at the long tables? We were ignored by the waitstaff for a while until I could finally get their attention to explain it. The place is really outdated. The biggest thing that will prevent me from going back is because it seems like they nickel and dime you. $1.50 for blue cheese, they charge you for fountain beverage refills and they charge you extra per item when you order takeout. I usually don't review a place unless I have a good experience and want to give four or five stars, and in this case I thinks it is a 2.5 star review. I really just want to set expectations for other people that might stop in so they can have a better experience. The number one thing to be aware of is that you are going to wait a long time. The menu even has a disclaimer on the front page noting that they have a small kitchen and service is not quick. For the establishment itself, you should expect a dive bar with cleaner bathrooms than other dive bars (though none of the ladies room stalls have locks that latch). There is no hostess or greeter, just a bartender and two very busy servers. Seat yourself anywhere you choose when you walk in. I have even seen people sit at dirty tables just because there is not another table open and, without a hostess, it gets slammed easily because no one is staggering seating of tables to allow for best service. Expect to wait 5-10 minutes before a server comes to your table. The menus are already there so you can get started on choosing your meal while you wait. You should note that there is a section marked 'extras' at the bottom of the menu, but that is actually just the itemized list of options. For example, the menu lists a side of blue cheese at $1.50 under extras, but if you order wings the server will ask 'ranch or blue cheese' and then you will be charged $1.50 for the condiment (in other words ranch or blue cheese are not included with wings and instead are considered extras). Another thing you should know is that they are a cash only business with an ATM. I would suggest bringing cash, and a variety of bills, so you don't have to wait for change. On our most recent visit, it was about ten minutes before someone came to us, then we were greeted at our table and the server took our drink order which was just a pitcher of water and two sodas. This was an early afternoon lunch. About ten minutes later the server returned with drinks and asked if we were ready. I said we would like to start with an order of extra spicy wings. The server warned that those were very, very hot and suggested we go a step down to the 3.5 level buffalo wing sauce. I told the server that we like spicy food and eat spicy food frequently so we want it to be hot. We were told that the 3.5 has very good flavor and very good heat and it will make your mouth burn and you'll sweat a little. That sounded good so we agreed. Then we ordered two sandwiches for our mains (a pastrami sandwich and a Reuben). Then we sat at the table for about 40 minutes before food arrived. I noticed that several tables who sat down after us had received their food first, which can be irritating but I chalked it up to the fact that different foods take different amounts of time to cook. It did irk me that we were waiting on a wing appetizer and a group that arrived about 15 minutes after us received three bowls of wings before we received of ours. The food arrived, however, it was just the two sandwiches and no wings. The Reuben was very good. I prefer the corned beef to be shredded rather than chunky like this one but the taste was spot on. Expect a ton of butter on the bread of the sandwich which gives a crunchy outside finish. The pastrami sandwich was good too. Sandwiches don't come with fries. Instead, you get an individual size bag of chips. When the sandwiches we're almost finished, the wing appetizer came out. The 3.5 buffalo sauce was very flavorful. It was not spicy/ hot though, just a really good buffalo sauce. There was definitely no sauce-induced sweating. We got bone in wings, but I was surprised at how small they were with so little meat on each wing. I have been to Wendell's several times and never remembered the wings being so tiny, but maybe I have ordered boneless in the past. Five to ten minutes after we finished eating, the bill arrived. It was $38 for two sandwiches, a wing appetizer, small blue cheese dressing, and two sodas. PROS: Very casual atmosphere Food is pretty tasty CONS: Price is high for what you get Very long wait- too long for kids Not set up for best service (though I think the servers do an amazing job with the resources they have) Wings are disappointing Cash only I think you could definitely go to Wendell's and enjoy yourself if you want to just hang out for a few hours, drink, eat some comfort food, and spend a good amount of money. Disclaimer; Wendell's has taken on almost mythical proportions in the underground buffalo wing community. And it's almost impossible to live up to those expectations. Understand from the beginning that Wendell's is a dive bar. One bartender, a couple of semi-rude waitresses and I'm quoting from their menu and outdated website here; Two Fryolators, One Grill, and Only One Cook This Is Our Tiny Kitchen's Fate So, Although We May Take Some Extra Time Most Agree ~ It's WELL Worth The Wait It's all true. You WILL wait for your food. And it IS worth it. Located in Norton on Rte. 123 near its junction with Rte. 140, and only a half mile from Wheaton College, is Wendell's Pub. Stark and unadorned on the outside, loud and dated on the inside, it's my favorite place for my favorite food, the almighty buffalo wing. Seat yourself and bring cash as there are no credit or debit cards accepted. Beware the dart leagues on weeknights and the jukebox at all times. Wings first. Seven levels of heat and flavor that range from "sissy" up to "double dare" are listed on the menu, though rumor is they have one level not listed (more on that later). My regular level is termed "3.5" which have good taste with a little burn. Most of my friends stick with the "regular" which is one step down. The wings here are small in size and deep-fried crisp without breading (blasphemy!), then tossed in sauce and served in little wooden bowls that look like my parent's salad bowls from the 1970s. Portions are fairly small and inconsistent, oftentimes I end up with all "second joint" wings or all "drummie" sections. They also offer boneless "wings" for those who don't like gnawing meat off of the bones. Blue cheese is extra and there are none of the traditional celery and carrots to be found. Other menu items that I have tried include crinkle-cut french fries (delicious), kale soup (very good), thick cut onion rings, jalapeno poppers (tasty, but no heat), and burgers that some friends swear by. Beer is expensive considering its suburban location (no doubt to capitalize on its proximity to Wheaton) and is available by the pitcher, glass and bottle, as are soft drinks. Once, and only once, did I try the hottest of their wings. Sitting at the bar (a mistake), I ordered "the hottest wings you serve". As I noted above, people have told me that there is one level above what is stated on the menu. I don't know exactly what I got, but it was H-O-T! The bartender brought them out at arms length, with his head turned away. He basically announced that someone had ordered "the really hot ones", so sitting at the bar all attention was on me. With the first couple of bites I could taste hot sauce, chili powder and black pepper in the mix. And that was the last time, for a long time, that I tasted anything at all. Two wings in and my nose was running, my eyes were watering, my ears were ringing and it felt like my lips were vibrating at a high frequency that only dogs could hear. Foolish pride was the only reason that I finished those wings, but I wouldn't want to do it again. My digestive tract aged several years that day. read more

Four stars for the food, would give 5 but feel 50 buck bill is steep for a dive joint. Nickel and dime everything, sides of ranch for wings, sour cream for potato skins, and every refill for soda (over two bucks). Most of those things aren't charged for at other restaurants or typically come with order (wings with ranch etc) and it really ran the bill up. Service was good, but slow for food to come out as everyone says, which I'd rather wait for good food so this didn't bother us. I love Wendell's, I've been going there for as long as I can remember. If you have a buffalo chicken craving, there's really nowhere in the area that compares. I generally get 3.5s or Extra Spicy bone-ins, depending on my mood. The wings are served in a wooden bowl with another bowl on top, used to shake the wings up. Served that way, you can shake the sauce in at the table yourself. My one gripe is that they charge $1.50 for a 3 oz cup of blue cheese - you could probably get a bottle of Wishbone Blue Cheese dressing for that price... but, I digress. A basket of french fries, which are pretty awesome, is only $2.50. They have a good selection of cold beer at a decent price. All in all, the wings are great, fries are good, beer is cold. The longtime "king of the wing", Wendell's has disappointed me as of late. Their wings seems to have gotten smaller and tougher. Their sauces are amazing but it may be nice for them to add some other flavors so my girlfriend, who can't do spicy food, could join me now and then. The thing that has always driven me nuts about the place is their service. Yes, it says on the menu "only two fryolators but its worth it" but sometimes they can be horribly slow. The place itself and the décor are nothing to write home about and their "cash only" policy usually has me walking across the street to the ATM before eating. We order, two people didn't get wings and everyone else got wings and a side, twenty five minutes later come the baskets of fries, twenty five minutes.... Twenty minutes after that- here comes the non wings. So that's forty minutes for a burger (the average time in and out of a restaurant is 39-45 minutes) Then finally over an hour after we sat down and ordered the wings come out! So the two of us who didn't order wings are done and now we just have to watch everyone else eat. Awesome. So why couldn't we split checks again? Because your wait staff is lazy. Why did fries that take 2 minutes 30 seconds to cook take over 25 minutes? Because you obviously haven't hired enough people to cook. Ever heard of ticket times?
