Recently I brought my 2018 vehicle to a chain tire/auto company for an oil change and when I picked my car up, my check engine light was on. This other company also told me that I needed nearly $600 in work done on my car. I thanked them for the feedback and immediately called DSCA to make an appointment (especially since my check engine light went on immediately after my appointment with the chain company). DSCA inspected my car, discovered that the oil cap and other caps were not on correctly secured which is why my check engine light went on. They also let me know that I did not need all of the work the other company said I did. I apologized to DSCA for getting in for a quick appointment at the other place since I know my car is in better hands with our trusted family mechanic. DSCA refused to accept payment for this check up which is why I am writing a review . . . they do a great job and are fair to their customers and deserve payment for their good work! Knowing that water had somehow gotten into my car during an extremely rainy period (carpet was wet), I was afraid to go to the dealer, fearing they might diagnose the condition as unfixable since my car is a 2013, after charging outrageous rates to diagnose the problem. AES figured out the problem quickly, performed the tedious work which involved rewiring much of the complicated wiring that had shorted out, due to the wet carpet. I came to Hillyard Automotive twice for work on my Mazda Miata, the first time after completing…read moresignificant suspension work on my to get an alignment and the second to recharge my AC which was blowing warm. My initial experience was great, when I took it in for the alignment they noticed that a several nuts/bolts were not torques down sufficiently and recommended what they called a "nut and bolt" where they would go through and take a wrench to everything in the suspension to make sure it was all up to spec. I was happy to go through with this as having a professional double check my work would certainly help me sleep a little sounder at night. The wording of this service made it clear that they would "Nut and bolt all suspension/steering hardware on a Modified/lowered/lifted vehicle." I took this to mean that, as the invoice said, they would make sure that everything in the suspension, especially anything obviously modified, was torqued down. A bit later, after not driving the car for about a month due to being out of town I schedule an AC recharge with them, on my way to the shop a clunk developed from the front suspension, I bring this up to the guys and they tell me they will take a look at it. It turned out that the top shock mount nuts, the ones keeping the entire assembly from falling a part were missing, presumably somewhere between my house and the shop. Being a key component of the suspension I had assumed this would have been covered in the nut and bolt I paid them 264 dollars for previously, but when I brought this up they were insistent that they had made it clear they only did work under the car, and the shock mount being inside the engine bay was not included in that. I was unsatisfied by this answer, and annoyed that I was being charged 174 dollars for something I was pretty confident I had paid for them to do already, but accepted it as my experience with them up until that point had been very good. It wasn't until I got home from the shop and checked the rear shocks to make sure those weren't backing off too that I realized that they had in fact tightened things that weren't under the car, including the same top mounts of the shocks in the rear. In addition to this I also found that they had snapped multiple studs in a brace that covered the top of the front shocks, which they had not told me about. I then called the shop and relayed this information, to which they insisted that their work on the rear shocks was them going "above and beyond" what was expected of them. It wasn't until I read them the wording of the invoice which was explicit in applying to ALL suspension hardware that they dropped this and were willing to provide me a refund for the 174 dollars they charged me to complete a job I had already paid for and replace the hardware that had fallen off as a result. I was very disappointed with how the situation was handled and their refusal to make their mistake right and admit wrongdoing tarnished what could have been a great experience. Had they just apologized for missing that when I was in the first time and fixed it I wouldn't have thought twice about it. Instead they insisted that their partially completed job was an example of them going above and beyond, and told me that "most shops wouldn't welcome me back after this." Which is an absolutely absurd stance to take after THEY are the ones who forgot to complete something. Their prices are decent, and when they do a job correctly it's done very well, but if something goes wrong they are extremely unwilling to apologize or take even the smallest amount of responsibility. Had they just apologized and fixed it I wouldn't have any reservations about returning or recommending the shop to others but the way they handled this situation was so poor that I will no longer do either of these things.
