I'm not a huge fan of plays, however my sister treated me to A Sherlock Carol and A Very Merry Christmas Carol this Christmas season and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I recommend the Mezzanine as you can see everyone and the entire set clearly. Wells Theatre has quite the talent! All the actors/cast performances were expressive, engaging, dynamic, powerful, and nuanced! While not overly dramatic, they were compelling and vibrant and lively without being nauseating. I loved the quick wit, and humor in A Sherlock Carol and the cast excellent! Some of the main characters in A SHerlock Carol are also in A Merry Christmas Carol as well. It's a small theatre that opened in 1913, and is a national historic landmark. It has ornate features inside and they sell light snacks and alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks at their concession stand. read more

This was my first time ever visiting this theater. It was absolutely gorgeous. The architecture is brilliant and maintained. The place is small , provides an intimate space for the productions. There is a concession that has snacks and drinks. They also serve alcohol and liquor. It also allows you to place order ahead of time. The bathroom was clean and had several stalls. It is convenient located near several local shops and restaurants. Parking can be tricky. I would definitely go back. read more

This is a beautiful, old theater, well-maintained, that hosts brilliant plays. Took family here to see A Sherlock Carol just to get everyone in the mood for the holidays. Show is about to start, so I'll finish this later... I'm back with a full review!! And news flash with no spoiler alert, it was phenomenal!! Couldn't not have asked for a better show!! The setting (in the lovely old Wells) was intimate and lent itself to a coziness unlike any other venue for theatre! The set and changes were in and of itself something of an orchestral maneuver pulled off by the multi-talented cast of actors!! So elegant and eloquent were every actor that you were pulled into the mix of this brilliantly written and fully engaging play! Every actor performed so beautifully and sang amazingly with such wit and humor and passion, they had us in stitches!! This was such a great performance by an amazingly talented powerhouse of outstanding actors!! My sisters and I had such a great time laughing together and just enjoying the entire experience!! Kudos to the writer, director, set manager, stagehands, lighting, producer, ushers, and of course, the brilliant cast who brought this show-stopping performance to life!! Highly recommend this place for a brief respite from the drudgery and busyness of life!! It's an escape from the blahs of the daily grind into an endless stream of laughter and excitement! We came here to see a Sherlock Carol, my family is from Stratford Ontario which has a huge Shakespeare community so they are not easy to impress but they loved it! We sat in the mezzanine and had a perfect view of the stage. They offer wine and beer and you can bring it to your seat which is nice, as well as pay for a intermission drink ahead of time. The staff was extremely friendly and nice. It definitely re sparked our love of the theatre and can't wait to come back! read more

This place is beautiful! I was invited here via Yelp to check out opening night of "The Hound of the Baskervilles". It's been a long time since I've been to a play. I think my last encounter with theater was about 6+ years ago when Wicked came to the Scope. So I was excited to see and support something a little more local. I had never been to this Theater before, but I had an idea of where it was located. It's pretty much right behind the Macarthur Mall. So if I were you, I would park at the mall and just walk there. Which is what we did. When you walk inside it almost feels like you are taken back in time. To a time where theater was reserved for only those of wealth. It was beautiful to say the least. Most everyone was gathered in the lobby, chatting, and drinking complimentary glasses of Champagne. Not sure if they do this every night they have a play, or if it was because it was the opening night of ours, but it was a great way to kick off the evening. There is also a bar in the lobby. I;d recommend getting a glass of wine or something to sip on while you wait for the show to begin. I did see some people bring their beers into the auditorium, not sure if that's allowed or not, but it seems doable. We were seated in the top section in the center. Great seats, minus the lights on the floor. I think they are emergency lights? They were incredibly bright and actually started taking away from the show, especially when the lights would go dark, which happened a few times during the production. My peripherals were taking a major hit and it started making me a bit sick. If I could have one and only suggestion for the theater it would be to turn them down. They are just entirely too bright. Other than that we had a WONDERFUL time! The show itself had us crying from laughter. It reminded me how much I miss the theater. And attending this one was a real treat! I read from past reviews that they have "A Christmas Carol" playing here during Christmas time. My family and I are always looking for fun Christmas-y things to do while my father is in town. I definitely will make it back here this Christmas so the rest of my family can experience such a wonderful experience at this magnificent theater! read more

The Wells Theatre is such a beautiful space! I went here for an Out 757 event over the summer and it was lovely. We all got to get on stage and enjoyed live music from a local band. It allowed folks to mingle with others in the community and allowed us a rare back-stage look into the theatre itself. The staff was absolutely lovely in taking care of all of us with food and drinks. They do a number of shows each year, and the venue is small enough that literally every seat in the house is a good one. I'd highly recommend checking this place out, especially if they are putting on a production you've been dying to see. read more

Beautiful facilities, gorgeously restored. Virginia Stage Company productions are usually excellent, and the venue adds to the experience.

This is a beautiful theatre with comfortable seats, beautiful architecture, great sound affects, and nice bathrooms. They have a bar in the middle where you can grab drinks before the show, during intermission, or after. I didn't get any drinks or snack, so I am not sure how much it costs. The ushers are all extremely helpful and will assist you to your seat. I will say, beware when sitting in the last 2 seats on the rows. You won't be able to see the entire stage. Other than that, awesome experience. Love this theatre. read more

Take a seat and support live shows! Theatre is an amazing experience as you get immersed in the play with actors right in front of you. This was our first time checking out a live play and it will not be our last. Wells Theatre is absolutely beautiful inside and it sets the mood for theatre plays. They offer a bar with drinks and snacks for refreshments during the shows. When we arrived, they were offering free champagne until supplies last. We then got seated and waited for the show. The Hound of the Baskervilles is the play we watched and it was a grand old time. It was a comedic spin on the Sherlock Holmes mystery tale and it was amusing. The play was performed by only 3 actors and they were extremely talented! The thought of memorizing all your lines alongside performing the act is mind boggling to me. Kudos to those three fellas for pulling it off and I have a new found respect for theatre actors. They certainly broke a leg! The play was a success and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We will continue to look for live theatre shows around the area and especially Wells Theatre. Switch it up and check out a live theatre play! read more

Although I couldn't act my way out of a brown paper bag, I absolutely love the arts, and theater in particular. I love to support live shows whenever I can, and this theater is a fabulous place to do it. There's so much beauty and history in the theater it's hard to get over. Obviously you have to make your way to the actual performance at some point (preferably just before it starts), but you'll find it difficult to pull away from the ornate beauty in the lobby alone. The Wells Theater is gorgeous from any angle, and they have a fantastic eye for talent and passion for the arts (at least from the handful of shows I've seen here.) Most recently I saw the Hounds of Baskervilles, a comedic, three-man crew take on the classic Doyle story. The actors were so bright and energetic, were so clearly having a tremendously fun time with the material, and with each other, everyone there couldn't help but be swept away to a wonderful mood that lasted the entire evening. I love this place, and I'll most certainly be coming back again. read more

Came here to see Hound of the Baskervilles and it was hands down one of the best shows I have ever seen. Wells Theater is beautiful building downtown. Thick, beautiful carpeting and interesting facades decorate the lobby. Theater seating is comfortable and not claustrophobic. We were seated in the mezzanine and the view was spectacular. Easy to see everything going on on stage. Do wish they had two servers for the concession as the line was too long during intermission to get a refill on the namesake hound of the baskervilles drink. Drink was delicious and only $10! Concession prices were not steep for anything else. 2 candies, 1 alcoholic beverage, and a bottle of water plus tip was $20. GPS might get you a bit lost. 2 different ones told us that we had arrived one block away by the Lorraine building. Wells Theater is closest to MacArthur Mall on Tazewell. We actually got lucky and found street parking so thanks GPS for sending around and around. This was a wonderful experience and I look forward to the next showing I can attend. read more

Went to Guys and Dolls at the Wells Theatre last night. Great venue, the show was excellent and I left humming "Luck be a Lady". The cast worked well together and the rolls were well cast. Only complaint is that it was rather warm in the venue. read more

Good small theater in downtown Norfolk right next to McArthur Mall. It's pretty clean and has a nice ambiance. The only minor issue is that there isn't parking close by, so as long as the weather is nice and you're wearing comfy shoes, you're good. read more

Went here on the ASL performance of A Christmas Carol. The actors and actresses were amazing. The man who played Scrooge was fantastic. The interpreters were amazing. I definitely would want to check out this play again or even another play. Everyone working was super friendly.
