I have been visiting this little shop for a few months now and during each visit, the staff has always been friendly, efficient, practices food safety standards & good hygiene while making sandwiches. However things appear to have changed. I visited yesterday and noticed an uptick in the number of kitchen staff, with many of them newer. The sandwich was obviously not made using best practices for food safety or perhaps it was the lack of good hygiene with the newer staff, because I became violently ill in the afternoon after having consumed lunch from this place. Nothing says "I LoVermont" like a little country store in a little village in the coziest state in the Union. Wells Country Store is just plain and simple. You walk in and you are greeted by a nice wooden ambiance, simple counter for orders, some tables to sit, and some shelves of various goods. Not much quantity but plenty of variety (given the small local population), and maple is of course well represented. My friend thoroughly enjoyed his sandwich, all made to order from a surprisingly wide variety. I had a spinach/feta pastry, raspberry muffin, and brownie - okay, not the healthiest, but I wanted to just grab quick food and nosh. * The pastry was surprisingly sweet, something I've never experienced before with spinach. Not big, but very reasonable price so you can always get two. * The muffin was huge and crumbly and full of fruit. There were some blue bits so it may have been mislabeled, but there was definitely copious raspberry. * The brownie? 5 stars automatically for any place that can make something THAT dark and deep in chocolate flavor, THAT rich in every bite. So much brownie for your buck, and the flavor is simply out of this world. If you're a chocolate lover, you love Wells Country Store. * The server was a bit quiet. Came forward if summoned, but not up front like service in most states. Very laid back, which is VermonTypical, so I went with it. * Shelf products not all priced, but my goodness, I selected a four-pack of maple porter and it rang up for $7.99. That's like half the price I expected. Overall impression: I would normally have waffled between 4 and 5 stars. It was close, but two deciding factors: location in such a wonderful town, in such a wonderful state, in such a quintessential manner; and that brownie. The brownie negates anything that seemed a little awkward here. Come here, eat dessert, and maybe eat and buy a plethora of other things while you're at it. read more

I drink my coffee black...let me tell you, the coffee at Wells Country Store is absolutely wonderful before milk or sugar. Too many coffee places make bitter dark coffee in expectation of the milkshake being added and that isn't the case in my favorite coffee place. Ask for the coldbrew if you're in the mood for a chilled treat...they've got all kinds of stuff to put in there, but try it without. You won't regret it! read more

I've been visiting this store for over 50 years. It has expanded its offerings, which now includes top notch deli and breakfast sandwiches. The owner is very particular about the bread and rolls used for the sandwiches, and it has not gone unappreciated. They have a nice selection of wines, along with a variety of products made in Vermont. It is a gathering place for locals, summer residents, bicyclists, and tourists. I got a sandwich at here after a poor experience down the road and let me tell you what. For a small town sandwich shop they were really good! Just a little messy. They use high quality meat and the veggies were fresh which I can't say for the previous place. I highly recommend The wells country store. Wells country store has been a staple part of our summer vacations for 20 + years. The breakfast sandwiches, muffins and donuts are always delicious, and the lunch sandwiches are beyond compare. Our kids even made a spreadsheet to rank them, though we all love the Haley Hallow, it gets really competitive for the top spot, the classic Oxbow, the Lightening and berry patch all rank high, so I guess it is safe to say, you can't go wrong no matter where your taste buds lead you. I also want to mention the ring toss for the kids has always been a highlight for children, and their cousins, we have many a family name listed on the door, they are all young adults now, but all of them still try, to land it on the hook, great fun and great food. read more

Pastries and baked goods are amazing, alway fresh and reasonably priced. the deli salads look better than they taste and are super expensive (all are priced by weight and there are globs of excess Mayo/oils which adds weight quickly). There are no prices on the chalk board menu and beware - they are exorbitant:(. I know, I know, small business have to make money but the locals also need to eat and jacking up the prices to capitalize on the out-of-state lake vacationers is wrong. The prices are slightly higher than the local market would suggest, but with the seasonal traffic from the nearby lake, it is reasonable. This is a delightful classic VT country store. Come here early in the morning on the weekends for fresh sugar donuts and muffins. The prices are great. I think coffee and a donut cost me $2.25. My wife and I stopped here for lunch this past Saturday, and we were pleasantly surprised by this charming country store. I had the hot daily special, which was a gigantic sub stuffed with homemade meatballs and cheese. My wife got a roast beef and cheddar sandwich with a cup of their tomato soup. Including drinks, our bill was less than $25. Chips were included, which was a nice touch. We were temped by their large selection of baked goods, and finally decided that a brownie would be a good way to end our meal. The staff was especially friendly and helpful, which can be rare in this day and age. We will definitely be back! read more

Though I had vacationed in Poultney for years, I had never been in this charming store until I read about their oatmeal chocolate chip cookies in Vermont Magazine. It is now a regular stop whenever I'm near the area - we gladly go out of our way to pick up whatever special order of cookies I've recently made.....my favorite used to be the caramel chocolate chip but now I insist on the potato chip chocolate chip cookies! I have lunched there, sitting outside in the cute patio on a nice summer day. We always swing by on our way back to New York to pick up breakfast sandwiches for the road. Julie is so warm and welcoming, and the store itself is a meeting place for locals. In the summer they have grill days, where you can get your lunch straight off the coals - unbelievable selection at incredible prices. read more
