I came to Wei West through a program that brought 10 of us and paid for our entire meal, so I had an incredible experience trying out all the different sushi + desserts. We ordered pretty much exclusively special rolls, I ordered a toro sushi, and I tried out a few of the desserts. Let's start with the cons: - Some of the sushi/sashimi was only okay in my book. The flavors of a few rolls didn't go too well together and some fish was a little too chewy - so you should come knowing what to order. - The toro (fatty tuna), which I've had only once before, was not as great compared to my last experience and more pricey. The wasn't as much flavor and it was a tiny bit too tough. - I've heard the non-sushi entrees are not too great, but I didn't order any, so I can't say for sure. Now, why I gave Wei West a 5-star rating despite the above: - Service was great; our waiter was super patient and helpful in giving us his recommendations for food we ordered, and at the end he gave us a strawberry-mochi dessert FREE! - The salmon sashimi + sushi is amazing. Great flavor, melts perfectly in your mouth. I specifically recommend the Golden Eye roll. - I really liked the tuna tower appetizer. A little pricey for its size, however. - The dessert spread was incredible. I am a huge, huge fan of gelato & ice cream in desserts, and they had really unique gelato combinations - lemon & limoncello flute, coconut in a coconut shell, hazelnut around a dark chocolate core. - It was all paid for this time :) On a side note, it can get a little expensive, but if you know what to order, it's worth it. read more

As someone who is gluten free, I was so excited when I saw this place! It got 3 stars on yelp and 5 on the gluten free app. We never go to restaurant that has less than 4 stars on yelp but we decided to give this place a try bc it had so many Asian gluten free options. We ordered the Manhattan roll and NYGiant roll which were both disgusting. The combination of ingredients made the sushi unpalatable. I would not order the sushi here. Stick to the gluten free sesame chicken which was good. Perhaps the non Japanese foods are better. The food did not trigger any of my gluten symptoms which was nice. read more

Nice, clean, friendly restaurant right at ground level outside the Conrad Downtown Hotel on the same side as Harry's. I have eaten at Wei West several times during my trip to NYC, and each meal has been delicious. Pad Thai was the same as I have had at Thai spots, beef & broccoli was very good although I would have preferred more variety of vegetables, shrimp and peapods was excellent. Costumer service here doesn't exist! Staff is untrained and too comfortable! I have requested a substitution the last 20+ times I've ordered via seamless and few times at the restaurant. While dining in last time, response of a waitress was "no, we can't do it". Anything i'd say, she wouldn't bother listening and cut me off saying, "we don't have time for that, weather is bad, a lot of orders". While there are only 3 tables occupied, you don't have time to even be polite? Very unwelcoming. We left. Other time, waitress messed up the order and wouldn't admit it, instead of trying to fix order or say sorry, she was laughing to my face, saying that's what I ordered, while tartar looked like ceviche. Also, very very rude. Spilling half of my drink is not a reason to replace it. Seating you right next to an occupied table, while restaurant is empty is normal. Giving customers unnecessary attitude is a common thing here. New management, staff training or replacement needed ASAP. Ordered take-out around 5pm on a Saturday via Seamless. The expected timeframe was 55-65 minutes, but it only took 45, maybe because I live only a 5 minute walk away. Ordered general tso chicken, lo mein, and egg rolls. Would order everything again except the egg rolls, which didn't have the right crust to filling ratio - it was huge, which is a plus but the fillings had too much cabbage and this weird meat in it, which I didn't anticipate. The complimentary dipping sauce is a peanut, soy, sesame mix which is more bitter bc of the soy sauce than anything else.... which didn't work. Ended up dipping the egg rolls in the general tso sauce lol. Beef lo mein was the star and saving grace. Super generous with meat, perfect ratio of noodles to veggies...perfectly fresh snow peas, scallions. Not overcooked, and beef was tender and moist, exactly as it should be. General tso chicken was average. I like that it's bite-sized. However, I prefer crispier chicken, as their variety has no crispiness at all. read more

But today, as I waited for my order from Shake Shack, I thought I'd give it a try. The guy taking the order at the front desk was a morose looking fellow. Had not an ounce of joy in his approach. Took my order down, took my card. Place was depressing. There was one table occupied inside and one outside. One sushi chef and one lady working beside the morose-man. Decided to give this place a try. I ordered the shrimp avocado and spicy yellowtail roll. I decided to add some crunch to the spicy yellowtail. It was quick service, but the rolls were mediocre. This is a new fusion Asian deli/restaurant in the area. Lunch hour was crowded so we decided to visit during happy hour. Sure enough, the service is fast and everything is good. We ordered hot sake, tuna tatare, fried caramari, and hot sour soup. It came with a complimentary edamame. Tuna tatare is very good, especially with that sea weed chip. Amazing. taste! After the waiter swiped my credit card, the receipt that I had to sign had an amount that was way over what I had eaten. In other words, they scammed me into paying a higher amount. This review is for the Happy hour only. This place has one of the best happy hour deals in an area SEVERELY lacking it. My go to to is the Lychee Martini ($7) whichis sweet and STRONG - two of these bad boys and I am drunk. They have a number of other cocktails in the $7-9 range and beers and sake (and sake bombs!) in the $5-8 range. Plenty of happy hour food options as well (e.g. chicken satay, tuna tartar, dumplings, scallion pancakes). Service is always prompt and courteous. This may not have the happy hour bar scene you typically see around the but it's a nice change of pace to be able to hear the person next you without getting beer spilled on you by yet another the finance bro. I never left a bad review because if I didn't like the food, I just didn't go back to the establishment but this was so bad that I just had to. -We ordered the $14.50 Pad Thai, which tasted more like a Malaysian noodle dish than it did a pad thai. I was disappointed to begin with that I paid double of what I'm used to paying for pad thai, but at least taste like it!! To top it off my food was cold, so they reheated it, causing the noodles to become extra crispy....but still not hot in temperature enough. In the end it was still cold and bland, so I asked for the Thai chili powder that's known to be added to the dish but they only had Sriracha and Chinese hot chili which made it taste more like that Malaysian noodle dish I've had in Elmhurst. -We also ordered the $15.50 bulgogi ramen which was warm and not hot, nor spicy as they claimed. More upsetting that was NOT bulgogi at ALL! Bulgogi is supposed to be thinly sliced Korean marinated ribeye beef which is grilled. NOPE...no bulgogi in this non spicy warm ramen. Flavor!! That is what is needed at Wei West! I have ordered from here a couple of times and even been to the restaurant a few times. However, each time I am left liking one dish and wishing the other had more flavor. My favorite dish from them hands down WAS the vegetable Bhutanese red rice....it was so good I even tried to replicate it at home (I failed miserably of course). I recently learned that the dish is no longer on the menu and so there goes any motivation for me to order from them again. The rest of the dishes that I have tried such as Kung Pao Chicken or Chicken Lo Mein have left me wishing that the dishes had a bigger punch flavor wise. Overall the food is just ok and for what I get too pricey as well. Full Disclosure: This is my first time writing a review on Yelp, despite years of using the site. Wei West has convinced me to become a Yelper by being shady. I went to Wei West for lunch today (despite only a 3 star rating on Yelp) because it seemed like an OK-looking place to get Asian food in an area of town that lacks good Asian options. Also, the menu on their website had a good sized "Business Lunch" section with almost every entree costing $10.95 (http://www.weiwestnyc.com/#!menu/vstc1=lunch). For Battery Park, that seemed fair enough. When we got to the restaurant, it seemed like a nice enough place. We were seated fairly quickly despite an almost full house. However, the vibe changed for the worse when we were handed menus that had lunch entrees listed at $13.95 and up!!!!!!! Really?! $10.95 on the website = $13.95 IRL?! Despite this, we went ahead and ordered (I got the Singapore Noodles, which were just ok). Upon receiving our check, we were shocked to learn that our 3 Diet Cokes cost $10.50!!!!! C'mon, Wei West. $3.50 for a tiny fountain soda?! On the way out, I mentioned the menu pricing discrepancy to the hostess and a gentleman in a suit that seemed managerial. He said the menu online was a take out menu (please refer to the link above. It does NOT SAY TAKEOUT anywhere on it). I asked why take out is $3 less than dining in, and he said the portions were smaller. I told him that it was incredibly misleading, and that $10.95 was an OK price, but $13.95 was definitely overpriced. I said that it seemed super shady to me, and that I shoulda listened to the Yelpers. TL;DR Wei West is a mediocre restaurant that uses shady tactics and pricing to gouge customers.
