We in Massachusetts had only dreamed about Wegmans, whose reputation preceded itself. Dream no more, now that we have one in Northborough (with the possibility of two more coming to Newton and/or Burlington).
This 138,000-sq-ft store is huge, and I felt like a deer in headlights when I looked around. The Market has buffet-style bars of Indian, vegetarian, Chinese food, and sushi (three people preparing a zillion different kinds), among others, while another nearby section contains NY-style pretzels (that you'd see in street carts), soups, and tremendous frosted cakes that you can cut and package (instead of having them already placed in plastic containers as in other stores). You can also order sandwiches and other goodies and then have them priced and weighed so you can enjoy them in the "café." A microwave is there for your use, and there's a soda fountain as well. [Note: I had a small container of Rogan Josh Indian food with saffron/cumin rice (I ate it in the café) and it might have been the best Rogan Josh I have ever had--so tender and flavorful. I spent $5.49, and it was enough for a satisfying lunch and much better and cheaper than that served in a regular Indian restaurant.]
The fish section, with its huge assortment of crab cakes ($8), dug-out pretzels with lobster meat ($$$$), and other fresh offerings, could make someone (me) drool. And the close-by kosher cart (different types of lox, white fish, etc.), lobster pond (with 1+-lb, 3+-lb, and 8-lb...yes. 8-lb...lobsters), and meat section (top-notch steaks, with price to match) were enticing. The kosher deli section, across from the cart, had knishes, salads, pastrami, turkey, and corned beef, but didn't have tongue. Big mistake.
The dessert section, with unique and eye-catching concoctions, was to-die-for. Had to pull myself away. The cheese section was impressive, too. They had a cranberry cheese for $20.99/lb--too expensive for my wallet, but I would have loved to try it.
There's also a tremendous liquor section with great buys on Patron (about $15 cheaper here than in a liquor store), beer (domestic and strange brands, but am sure beer lovers would recognize them), nips, and rows of vodka, gin, etc. The room was larger than any liquor store I have ever seen.
Yeah. They had "regular" food, an extensive dairy section, and a meat section (not as fancy as the gourmet meat section), as well as an area for bulk food.
Tons of cashiers, and everyone was helpful and friendly. When I came home, I realized that I had never perused the produce area. Just like a good book, it sometimes takes more than one "read" or "trip" to absorb all that a novel or store has to offer. Will have to return. Am thinking you can spend hours in this store. read more
