Decks and fences of NWA

We hired Lyle Shipley with Deck and Fences of NWA in October 2025 to build two decks, two deck…read morecovers and a 4'x6' platform. We had nothing but scheduling delays from day one. Just getting the bid from him took a month, which should have been an indication that we shouldn't have hired him, but we had a recommendation from another contractor who told us Lyle did good work. While the two guys who work for him have excellent skills and work ethic, Lyle lacks project management and communication abilities. We paid 50% of the project cost up front, which is pretty standard. The agreement was that the 4'x'6 platform would be built right away because we had temporary stairs into the house, which were pretty unstable. That took a month and a lot of asking on our part as to when the work was going to be done. The agreement for the other two decks was the work would be done in January 2026. We did a follow up in early January as to when he planned to do the work. He never reached out to give us updates on delays. In late January, we contacted him and asked for our money back, less about $1600.00 that he bid for the 4'x6' platform that he actually built. He said he doesn't do refunds and go ahead and talk to a lawyer and we would find out we had no contract, just an estimate. We had already talked to a consumer protection lawyer, who told us had a case, and to go ahead and file suit. That information prompted Lyle to schedule our work for March 2nd. One of his workers told us they had just finished another project prior to starting work on ours in March, which means Lyle put other work before our promised schedule, and delayed us two months. Another bit of information from his crew was he likes to spend Mondays with his kids, so multiple work days were lost with no explanation to us. Late arrival, when the crew was here, meant partial days of actual work, too. On the last day of work, we gave to the guys who actually worked here a $50.00 bonus each, and told them while there were continual problems, we never had a problem with them. They told Lyle they had gotten an extra $50.00 each, so he tacked $40.00 onto the final bill for his tip. We intentionally did not offer him anything beyond the contract, but he took it anyway. If you hire this guy to work for you, don't expect your project to start or finish when promised.
