It has a past that is less pretty than the park is today. 100 years ago, it was home to a thriving middle-class Black communtiy. From the 1870's until about 1920 it remained a neighborhood settled by formerly enslaved families. In the early days, it was called Freedman Town. They later named the town Quakertown in honor of the Quakers who aided in the abolition of slavery. All was well until 1920 when a nearby college (now Texas Women's University) decided having a Black neighborhood so close to campus was not good for the university. They petitioned the city and long story short, the neighborhood was moved. Like so many stories like this, you will be hard pressed to find the story in official public records . For years it was nowhere to be found. The name of the park that was created when the neighborhood was vacated was City Park for decades until in the 1980's when activists were able to get the history back in the books. In 2007 the park was officially named Quakertown Park again out of respect for the community that had been erased from where this park stands

Important : Splash pad opens May and closes in September…read more This place is so awesome!! We have a 2 year old and a 4 year old and they absolutely loved it. The park has water features (splash pad) and a playground for the kids to play. There are multiples chairs that are bolted to the ground, picnic tables, a pavilion, and plenty of parking. There is a nice public restroom and a nice field where kids can play catch or run around. We came around 6pm on a Friday and it wasn't too crowded. Can't wait to get back here before the summer ends!!

Finding this spot was a bit of a treasure hunt thanks to Yelp's directions, but once you check the…read moremap, it's easy to spot--tucked behind some softball fields. We always bring a bag to pick up trash on walks, but there wasn't much litter here (bonus points!). It's mostly shaded, uncrowded, and has a few rolling brooks to enjoy along the way. Not too hilly, just a perfect, peaceful spot for an hour or two of strolling. And parking? A breeze!

There are park benches for a picnic with friends and family or to just sit and enjoy the view of grapevine lake. A must visit park to reset. It's a dog friendly place. This sprawling park has paved trails with inner and outer loops spanning about three miles, plus loads of other amenities, including tennis courts, volleyball nets, a catch-and-release fishing pond, gazebos, and the well-crafted Eureka playground. There were already dozens of joggers, dog walkers, and parents with toddlers out and about at South Lakes by late Saturday morning in January, when the temperature had just nudged up to 50 degrees. Its convenient and safe, and I plan to be back often.

My kids identify this as one of the best splash pads in the area, second only to Oak Hills Park in…read moreCarrollton (which they love because of the slides). It is HUGE - definitely the largest splash pad I've seen in terms of sheer size. It is designed so that the water spouts at the top of the splash pad form a small river that flows down to the lower area, where there are more spouts, plus rocks to climb on and grassy (turf) hills to roll down. My kids like bringing small toys and racing them down the river. The real star here is the shaded observation area for the mamas, though. There is no other park that treats us so well, providing expansive shade tents all the way around the park. There are picnic tables, but for the most part it's BYOC (bring your own chair) - or blanket - and set up shop on the turf, under the shade, in an elevated spot so you can keep an eye on the littles playing below. The bathrooms are new and usually pretty clean, although sometimes they do still smell like a porta potty. The splash pad hours are kind of a bummer, with the water not turning on until 10am. In the peak heat of the summer, we would be there waiting right at 10, but by 12:30 or so the water already felt like bath water - not refreshing and honestly kind of gross. I wish it opened at 8am so we could enjoy it for longer. Now that summer is over, the splash pad is only open on the weekends. They have a super helpful and very clear calendar which posts the hours here: https://www.highlandvillage.org/calendar.aspx?CID=31&showPastEvents=false There is a traditional playground directly adjacent to the splash pad, but it's unremarkable - certainly nothing you'd drive out of your way for. The rest of the park is BEAUTIFUL and well landscaped. I'm not sure what they use that massive pavilion for, but honestly I think it makes a case for a good wedding venue! If you're looking for a splash pad to add to your summer rotation, put this one on the list.

You can't swim far since boueys limit your swim, but it's good enough to get some laps in. Set up a tent/umbrella, bring sand toys and lots of sunblock, then let the kids go crazy. There's also a really neat playground within walking distance and a walking trail. Plenty to do with the little ones. As long as your expectations are low, you will be pleasantly surprised.

They have restaurants near by and it's a safe area overall I'd say to walk even in the evenings, there are usually people around since it's in the center of many apartment complexes and homes. They host alot of different events throughout the year too, which are fun, most of them free while some, such as the Taste of Addison cost money but are still worth checking out. They're planning on renovating the park soon, so I can't wait to see what they do to it. I do think that's the one thing they're missing, is more to do at the park. It'd be nice if we got a pickleball court, or a playground or something to entertain yourself while you're there. I think it'd attract more people for sure.
