I was looking for a park with walking trails west of Denton and was thrilled this morning to discover South Lakes. This sprawling park has paved trails with inner and outer loops spanning about three miles, plus loads of other amenities, including tennis courts, volleyball nets, a catch-and-release fishing pond, gazebos, and the well-crafted Eureka playground. There were already dozens of joggers, dog walkers, and parents with toddlers out and about at South Lakes by late Saturday morning in January, when the temperature had just nudged up to 50 degrees. Its convenient and safe, and I plan to be back often. read more

Big great park!!!! It's huge. And has a fence all around it which is great for letting the kids roam free. There's also a small section/space for toddlers to play in. And there's also a basketball court a few yards away and walking trail. Only in town for a few days. So happy I found this place. read more

Beautiful park and play area. Plenty of space to walk, ride a bike, picnic on the grass or under a pavilion, play basketball/ volleyball or tennis. A very nice park for walking around when the weather cooperates; a long walking trail winds around the park, which is located adjacent to a fairly large, long lake, suitable for dog walking and hiking around. It's how the city of Denton, Texas does outdoor recreation, in a rapidly growing and changing urban environment. The author grew up in the city, where he attended public schools, finally graduating in 1985 from the University of North Texas; I went south to Houston to earn an MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Houston, finally graduating in December 1992. I led a research team studying the agricultural and technology implications of leadership model that posits better results come from a situational approach to adapting one's behavior to the management team leaders, which requires that the behavior of the executive in charge immediately act on the latest information, in order to ensure best standard operating procedures and protocols are actually acted on in a timely fashion. One of the things I like about Denton is that they have a fair number of good parks you can use. This isn't the biggest park in Denton but the closest one to my house. They have restrooms, not the cleanest but they are at least working and I've seen far worse. They have a nature trail you can walk through the woods. There are also concrete trails you can use. They have basketball court, tennisball courts and also a decent sized playground. They have a couple of covered areas with seating where you can bring your own food or just sit and relax. It's particulary useful when it's raining or if the weather is hot. It can be popular during the weekend when the weather is good but I haven't seen the parking lot completely full yet. They even have a couple spots for EV's which is not something I expected to see at a regular park. read more

This is a huge playground. I has 2 different swing areas with at least 5 swings in each area. Tons of slides and play structures and all the good stuff in a playground. It even has a zip line. They have handicap accessible play equipment too. There's a "little" playground and a "bigger" playground. My 3 yr old plays on both. But, there is a draw for the older kids to play on the "little" playground and that makes its really good for those under 5 who can't keep up with the larger kids. We absolutely LOVE coming here. They also have great open space for kite flying, lakes, a wonderful jogging trial, a basketball court, and tennis courts. I'm unsure if they have disc golf. The only reason I give it 4 stars... When I started considering it for a birthday party I took into account that neither the playground nor the pavilions are convenient to the bathrooms. There are 2 reservable pavilions. One pavilion (pavilion 1) set far away from the playground. And another pavilion (pavilion 2) is set closer to the playground HOWEVER, the one that is closer is still a bit of a walk to the entrance of the playground. Basically, you can see the kids play at a portion of the park (the zip line area), but then you have to walk all the way around the park to enter it. It really isn't logistically easy. If you have kids, you'll have to corral them for the party portion of your event. If you have small kids and you need to be within an arms reach, then you can't see them from the pavilion at all. It would be super simple for them to add a latched gate on the playground fence closest to the pavilion. That would be really really nice and make the pavilion more convenient. The sight-lines in the playground are pretty terrible. We lose sight of our 3 yr old all the time on the "bigger" playground. He needs our help still, so we follow him around - but we have a hard time switching sides of the play structure to keep an eye on him. Just something to keep in mind. Also, this playground is always fairly active. We see lots of kids and parents whenever we go. read more

My daughter and I were visiting Denton today and I wanted to checked out the playground at this park. The playground is huge and spacious. There's a combination of soft surface and wood chips. The soft surface part is higher than the wood chip parts so my daughter tripped and rolled over the wood chips. Luckily she didn't cry and still wanted to walk through the playground. Restrooms are nearby with a heat sensor sink and hand dryer in the women's restroom and some water fountains right outside of the area. I also saw some tables and benches for snacks and lunches throughout the park. There was a good amount of people here even on super hot day. I would definitely take my daughter back here if we're ever in Denton area. read more

This is an amazing park. It has a big play ground for kids which is always alive and filled with laughter and many more things. It has two big tennis courts, a basketball court, a really nice walking path, lakes with fish, and more. I go here many times a week and everyone is always so friendly and happy there. It is one of my favorite places in Denton. Lots of people, lots of fun. read more

Beautiful park! Love the new renovations to the play area. My family loves to come to this park. We have not been as often as we used to go, but each time we visit is always a pleasure. The boys played in the park while hubby and I took a short stroll in the park. It was a beautiful day on Saturday so it was nice to see all of the families out enjoying the sunshine. Weekends can be a bit crowded, but there was still enough space for everyone to still have fun. I saw that a few people were fishing. I have wanted to take my boys fishing for a while, so I will invest in a few poles and we can go fishing at their favorite part. That is definitely a win-win. P.S. The ice cream truck that is there is a bit pricey, so I suggest stopping at the store or going to a cheaper fast food option to save a few bucks. read more

Very calm and clean park. You can run/walk a loop reaching about 3 miles or so. Lots of people and right by the street so plenty of people around. I always feel safe coming here. Plenty of trees to hammock. Restrooms are decent with water fountains. Trash cans in plenty of places. There's also a mini hiking trail you can go to from the park. read more

This is my favorite place to run. I love South Lakes Park! This park/trail is always very clean and very well maintained. The main trail goes around 2 nice lakes with lots of ducks and trees. Very nice scenery while running. There is a turnaround trail halfway if you are u are not up for doing the whole thing. It is a nice cement trail will markers every 1/8 of a mile. There are also lot of benches to sit and enjoy the day. Make sure you hit the nature trail also. It's only .5 miles but goes into the woods for some really nice running scenery. It is gravel so be careful where you step. There is also an amazing park for the kids to play on. It is surrounded by a huge fence with only one entrance/exit which is awesome. Kids love to play there for hours. There is also a large bathroom and water fountain. This is great while out running or taking kids to the park. There are always lots of people around so it always seems safe. This is a great park that all other parks should be like. I encourage you to go run there or take kids to play or feed the ducks. read more

This park has 2 ponds, a great play area for kids, tennis courts, and basketball courts. The great thing about South Lakes is that the walking/running trail is huge and there's also an "off road" path that's perfect for hiking. I used to come here to play Pokémon go and it's perfect for that. There's lots of gyms and pokestops. I do, however, have some complaints about this park. If you come after 5 pm good luck finding parking. There's lots of workout classes that go on here, organized sports practices, and just your average runner running along. The parking lot is so small that you have to park in the neighborhood across the street. There are a few parking spots for electric cars to charge so that a plus for you energy efficient people out there. I also wish that the park was better lit for night time running. There are parts that are completely black at night. Beware of the mosquitos at night by the water as well. I recommend coming to this park midday during the week and going along the hiking area. It's so cool and my favorite part of the park. read more

The best park playground in Denton to take kids to. Unfortunately, it's not as fun for adults as children, at least in that area. This is a well-maintained suburban park, so if you are looking to be in tuned with nature, go to Northlakes Park.
