This sprawling park has paved trails with inner and outer loops spanning about three miles, plus loads of other amenities, including tennis courts, volleyball nets, a catch-and-release fishing pond, gazebos, and the well-crafted Eureka playground. There were already dozens of joggers, dog walkers, and parents with toddlers out and about at South Lakes by late Saturday morning in January, when the temperature had just nudged up to 50 degrees. Its convenient and safe, and I plan to be back often.

It has a past that is less pretty than the park is today. 100 years ago, it was home to a thriving middle-class Black communtiy. From the 1870's until about 1920 it remained a neighborhood settled by formerly enslaved families. In the early days, it was called Freedman Town. They later named the town Quakertown in honor of the Quakers who aided in the abolition of slavery. All was well until 1920 when a nearby college (now Texas Women's University) decided having a Black neighborhood so close to campus was not good for the university. They petitioned the city and long story short, the neighborhood was moved. Like so many stories like this, you will be hard pressed to find the story in official public records . For years it was nowhere to be found. The name of the park that was created when the neighborhood was vacated was City Park for decades until in the 1980's when activists were able to get the history back in the books. In 2007 the park was officially named Quakertown Park again out of respect for the community that had been erased from where this park stands

I spent the next several years in Budapest, and, where I taught profit-driven business practices, such as accounting and marketing skills to former Soviet Union assets of transferrable funds to United States shell companies, such as we are now changing gears for, after the last four years of system overloading. We are across the way from them at Toll Brothers Parkvue Denton. You couldn't live in a more luscious spot. Green, private, great dog people, it's perfect on a 64 acre, Army Corp of Engineers property, never to be developed.
