This sprawling park has paved trails with inner and outer loops spanning about three miles, plus loads of other amenities, including tennis courts, volleyball nets, a catch-and-release fishing pond, gazebos, and the well-crafted Eureka playground. There were already dozens of joggers, dog walkers, and parents with toddlers out and about at South Lakes by late Saturday morning in January, when the temperature had just nudged up to 50 degrees. Its convenient and safe, and I plan to be back often.

So for now that goal is unusable... I'm thankful for this to even exist but it's gotten out of hand that even though I live closest to this I'm tempted to go elsewhere. But for the rest of the park- it is truly amazing- a driving range, tennis, fishing area- I'm thankful- but city of Denton please restore the disc golf course!

Quakertown Park is nestled today between the Quakertown Civis Center, Denton City Hall, and the…read moreDenton Senior Center. It has a past that is less pretty than the park is today. 100 years ago, it was home to a thriving middle-class Black communtiy. From the 1870's until about 1920 it remained a neighborhood settled by formerly enslaved families. In the early days, it was called Freedman Town. They later named the town Quakertown in honor of the Quakers who aided in the abolition of slavery. All was well until 1920 when a nearby college (now Texas Women's University) decided having a Black neighborhood so close to campus was not good for the university. They petitioned the city and long story short, the neighborhood was moved. Like so many stories like this, you will be hard pressed to find the story in official public records . For years it was nowhere to be found. The name of the park that was created when the neighborhood was vacated was City Park for decades until in the 1980's when activists were able to get the history back in the books. In 2007 the park was officially named Quakertown Park again out of respect for the community that had been erased from where this park stands

My kids identify this as one of the best splash pads in the area, second only to Oak Hills Park in…read moreCarrollton (which they love because of the slides). It is HUGE - definitely the largest splash pad I've seen in terms of sheer size. It is designed so that the water spouts at the top of the splash pad form a small river that flows down to the lower area, where there are more spouts, plus rocks to climb on and grassy (turf) hills to roll down. My kids like bringing small toys and racing them down the river. The real star here is the shaded observation area for the mamas, though. There is no other park that treats us so well, providing expansive shade tents all the way around the park. There are picnic tables, but for the most part it's BYOC (bring your own chair) - or blanket - and set up shop on the turf, under the shade, in an elevated spot so you can keep an eye on the littles playing below. The bathrooms are new and usually pretty clean, although sometimes they do still smell like a porta potty. The splash pad hours are kind of a bummer, with the water not turning on until 10am. In the peak heat of the summer, we would be there waiting right at 10, but by 12:30 or so the water already felt like bath water - not refreshing and honestly kind of gross. I wish it opened at 8am so we could enjoy it for longer. Now that summer is over, the splash pad is only open on the weekends. They have a super helpful and very clear calendar which posts the hours here: https://www.highlandvillage.org/calendar.aspx?CID=31&showPastEvents=false There is a traditional playground directly adjacent to the splash pad, but it's unremarkable - certainly nothing you'd drive out of your way for. The rest of the park is BEAUTIFUL and well landscaped. I'm not sure what they use that massive pavilion for, but honestly I think it makes a case for a good wedding venue! If you're looking for a splash pad to add to your summer rotation, put this one on the list.
