I've never been to a way back burger but I was expecting something similar to five guys and I wasn't entirely wrong. The restaurant is very clean with a great amount of seats. The parking is a bit uncomfortable considering the fact that the restaurant is on the very corner of the plaza right where the cars from Dunkin come in and out but it's definitely manageable. The service was quick and you can see them make the food right in front of you which is definitely a plus in my eyes. The food itself was also pretty good I built my own burger and it was delicious. The fries were not my personal favorite but I did get regular fries with nothing on top so I'll be sure to try another fry option next time! read more

I used to like this location. They were always a little slow getting the food out but the quality was always good. I don't know if this location changed hands but the last time I went there the quality of the food wasn't any good. I don't know if they're not changing the oil in their fryer or cleaning the grill properly but the food tasted off. I don't need to get sick so I'm not going back to this location again. Went there today for the $5 burger offer and once I ordered I found out that I could only get that offer if I ordered another menu item. So I ordered fries and they said it would be cheaper if I got the soda because I would get the meal deal. So I did . The $5 turned into $11.80. I know I chose to continue , I get that. My issue with it is many people will feel like this is a bait and switch thing. People will feel cheated. Why create unnecessary bad feelings ? Why not offer the meant $5 off ? Or a similar deal instead of waiting until the person is at the counter . I would imagine the person at the counter is having the same conversation all day that he had with me. Not handled well. Decided on a takeout pickup while in the area and we were so glad we did. Used the Yelp app to order while driving over. Once inside I let the staff know I had placed an online order, they were pleasant and professional and asked if I needed anything else while I waited for the food. The restaurant was clean, the cooking area also looked clean. The kids working were efficient and had an obvious system going. One of the staff let me know my order would be up shortly, and they were right, our order was cooked, wrapped and bagged in less than 15 minutes. I'll add there were others waiting before me who also received their food before me. Food was cooked according to order, toppings were in place and fried pickles were delish! At the time of me writing this review there's a Yelp check in freebie for an order of them if you get a sandwich and drink. Use it so that the people who work here know how to handle it (kid ringing me out had to call a manager) Sometimes the burger of the month and the shake of the month are hit or miss. If it sounds weird it probably is. Onion rings are enormous. If you forgo chips, get these (still skipping the fries) Order online: this isn't McDonald's with stuff rotting under a heat lamp, if you're in a hurry (or impatient) order on their website, waltz in at the appropriate time, and avoid waiting. Personally, I love the Thanksgiving burger (it's always BotM in November) and the cheesy burger with bacon. I'm not a big milkshake person, but the few I've had that were normal flavors were good. Way too pricey for the amount of food you get. I'm a girl with a HUGE appetite and Jake's Wayback did not deliver. I ordered Irish nachos, fries and a chili dog. Work is about 2 mins away, I finish my fries before I got back to the hospital parking lot. Seriously I can't believe the serving size was that small! No I didn't order from the kid's menu. The fries were decent, hot and the oil was fresh but I just didn't get enough. Oh what happened to throwing ketchup packages into take out orders? I would have appreciated at least two ketchup packages. My chili dog was a total disappointment. I can't believe I paid $4 for that depressing dog! Two mouthfuls and the dog disappeared! I was in and out within 10 minutes after ordering a Big Easy with a regular fry. The burger was really well made and of still as hot as the sun when I got home. The pepper jack cheese and the double party blended really swell with a sauce that wasn't too spicy but had that special x-factor kick to it. To top off this burger the regular sized fries were overflowing out of the box and spilling into the bag. Definitely got my money's worth and will be going back as soon as possible. read more

I was not impressed by the food at all :( I got the special fish sandwich, an order of irish nachos, and a small banana milkshake for ~$15. The nachos were homemade potato chips topped with a chili that was so salty even a splattering of sauce was too much. As for the sandwich, the batter was so thick that it created a raw gritty flour layer between the outer crisp and the fish itself. Both items were really inedible. The place was VERY clean. It was dead inside so service was a non issue. There was something for everyone. I had some Texas spicy thing.. I dont see it on the menu now so it might have been Burger of the Month and it was damn good. The bun was fluffy and doughy, a lot of chains tend to skip on bun quality, this place does not. It said spicy and there WAS a kick and for the average Joe this burger IS spicy.. However, for me Habaneros are the "new black" so I recognized a kick, albeit it was like a kick from a hamster. But the burger itself was not disappointing and every one of the 4 kids was happy which is a major accomplishment. Now that I live up here, I will definitely visit more often. One thing they need however, is a "Wayback, Waybetter" salad. Any burger they offer chopped up on a bed of lettuce. That would make this place a PERFECT spot for the low carb crowd that have a hankering for a burger. read more

This was my second time here since the place opened. After the first time my wife and I agreed we would never come back. Well, because I am a sucker for a cheap meal and my wife magically produced a BOGO for a burger from Wayback, we find ourselves here again. Right off the bat I will say the service is great and it is the food that is lacking. My observation really only pertains to the gentleman that was running around taking orders and making sure everyone was getting what they wanted and/or expected from the establishment. Even with the coupon, price was still an issue, for the price of this food you would expect the quality to be on par with places like 5 guys or mooyah and it was not. In hindsight I should have just saved the money I spent and ate a salad. The food was egregiously bad. I ordered the cheesy burger and onion rings with a side of their house sauce a buffalo blue cheese mixture. My wife ordered the bacon burger and fries. Now don't get me wrong, I love a sloppy burger and my motto is the sloppier the better, however, the sloppiness should come from the fixins' not the grease. My cheesy burger was more greasy burger than cheesy and I was immediately put off. The patty was under seasoned if seasoned at all and left a bland slick taste in my mouth. The best part of this burger was the bun which was turned inside out and toasted on the outside like a grilled cheese would be. I enjoyed the contrast of crisp and soft in the bread. The best part of the meal was the bun. The onion rings were just OK. they were thickly battered and a bit more chewy than I like and nothing really jumped out at me. I was disappointed in the "house" sauce since it was more blue cheese than hot anything. Needless to say, I ended up eating my rings with ketchup. My husband and I stopped in today for lunch in this recently opened establishment. It was quite busy since it was lunch time and several people were waiting for their orders, some gargantuan in size( the order, not the people) This is not a fast food establishment and your food is cooked when you order it, so you'll have to wait a bit especially at peak lunch time . The burgers aren't sitting under heat lamps growing e-coli for some unsuspecting customer. My husband ordered a Jake burger which is prepared with two patties and an order of house made chips (chips are VERY GOOD, and it doesn't matter if they cool off as you eat them) They were out of veggie burgers (damn!) so I ordered a grilled cheese , side of fries, and a coffee shake. My husband said that the burger was pretty good and loved the chips. We both thought the regular fries were just standard, and my coffee shake which was generously sized and very cold (yum) could have tasted a bit more "coffee". My grilled cheese was, well, just grilled cheese. Yellow American , I prefer white, and white bread only, I prefer whole wheat or multigrain, but if I'm going to be picky, then I should just eat at home...lol. They also offer chicken, BLTs turkey burgers, hot dogs and such. I would probably eat here again, but as with most burger/ fry joints I wouldn't go out of my way. That's not to say that this is a below average place , I'm just saying that I'm not won over by most places like this. I do think however that if you enjoy burgers, hotdogs and other food-with-a-face, this is a pretty good alternative to Burger King, McDonalds, and the rest of the dreadful fast food chains. I must repeat: be prepared to wait for your order. It took 20 minutes for our simple order to arrive at our table . I'm not sure if that's standard, but I have a feeling that it is . If you can't wait and you are the kind of person that is going to have a meltdown if you don't get your food in under two minutes, order ahead for your takeout, or don't eat here. Personally I would rather have my food cooked when I order it, rather than having it sit under heat lamps for a couple of hours... Be patient! Update 4/30/2014... Yum... I've tried their veggie burger and it's pretty damn good...this is a great alternative to grilled cheese... It's not that Wayback burgers are bad, but, they're not exactly good either. I'd rather drive from Waterbury to New Haven for 5 Guys than go across town to this place. Even if I wanted to stay in town, there are much better burger options. G's, Frankies/Big Franks, Blackies, and a number of diners all serve a better burger. Only when compared to the likes of BK and McDonald's does this place shine and it doesn't shine much brighter. They're kind of like Wendy's without the salt.
