I have gotten a series of bad haircuts in the past few years in Durham, and have been going home to Georgia to get my haircut, but I really needed it done. So I took about an hour last weekend to call around to different places to try to find a stylist that is well versed in my hair type and is a good cutter vs colorist. I decided on making an appointment with Paula at noon today after speaking to the receptionist at Wavelengths. When I arrived today, they did not have any evidence of my appointment. They said they could fit me in at 12:45 with someone. I expressed to the owner how worried I was about having another bad haircut and how reticent I was to have someone cut my hair who was not very experienced with fine hair. She and the receptionists assured me that this other stylist was good at haircuts and they had just seen her cut someone with fine hair and it looked good. I said ok because I really needed a haircut. Huge mistake. The appointment got pushed to 1, and then when I got there I was told the stylist was 10 minutes behind. 26 minutes later, I was taken to a hair washing station. TLDR, the whole experience was bad. I looked like cousin it for almost the whole haircut, she mostly cut my hair with it hanging over my face. Almost the whole haircut happened with my hair in total disarray on top of my head even though I clarified with her twice where I like my part. I showed her two pictures of me after haircuts I liked, and what she gave me was a limp Florence Henderson-esque haircut that has a bulbous look at the top and then a long way to the next layer. I asked her to blend the layers better. She tried to no avail. My hair looks piece-y, choppy, and worse than when I style it myself. It has zero volume. The whole experience was so bad I was just fully disassociating by the end of it. I expressed multiple times I was not satisfied. At the end I even said "this does not look good" and asked her to stop cutting before it got worse. This stylist is not even listed on their website and according to their instagram it appears that she has worked there for a week. It's clear that they wanted to figure out how to help me, but what ended up happening is my hair looks terrible and now I need to pay to have it redone (in Georgia, the stylists in Durham have now fully traumatized me). Paid full price and tipped. Will definitely not be back. Horrible experience all around.

I asked for layers to give my very straight Asian hair more life and volume-- it looked great!

Let me start with this: I am the type of person who will wait until I fly back to Taiwan once a year to get my hair cut, and I will supplement in between with trimming my own hair, rather than put it at the mercy of an inexperienced hairstylist who doesn't know how to work with Asian hair. That being said, I'm SO happy I've found someone I can trust to be my hairstylist: Risa! Risa was friendly, professional, and experienced (trained and worked in Tokyo, then moved to New York City where she worked for years, and finally moved to Durham recently). She was able to easily cut my hair to create the professional and layered hair style with bangs that I showed her a picture of, and was also able to make it work well with my face shape and my hair. I think she works well with all types of hair (the customer before me had a great haircut), but I just want to also point out that she cuts Asian hair very, very well -- a rarity to find in this area. Plus she is relatively young and trained in large cities, and that comes with the added benefit of having an updated modern repertoire with lots of diversity. For $56 for a women's haircut, it was definitely worth it. She will be my go-to hairstylist from now on!

I absolutely love my hair! They fit me in last minute and Kunita was the best!!! I trusted her expertise, and I am so glad I did. I am so happy with the results and feel like a whole different person! They were all super nice and made me feel comfortable. I will definitely come back. I highly recommend them.

I randomly saw Carli for an updo and we very pleased with her work! I showed her a few pictures and she made magic. Will try to see her again next year before this black tie event!

Four days before a friend's twenties-themed wedding, and I'm hell-bent on getting an appointment to transform my boyish growing-out pixie into a class act with finger waves. No one would take me on such a tight timeline, and with such a non-traditional request... until I called Wavelengths. They fit me in at the ideal time on a Saturday afternoon. When I arrived, I was paired with a styllist who, frankly, seemed intimidated by her assignment. Eventually, though, she called William over for a consult, and he gave her some advice on how to get started. She told me she was catching a cold, and apologized for her sniffling. I felt bad for her; but the sniffling was so constant, I got worried I was going to catch the cold too! When my hair was completely Gellac'd, she started trying to start the ess wave, but couldn't quite get it. That's when William stepped in. Somehow, he was able to sculpt my hair into submission, and the style looked good on all sides, including the back! After a few minutes under the dryer, it was also zapped into place. I did a lot of running around, setting up for the wedding; plus a little dancing, and it held up all night. Very impressed with them for updos! But would recommend asking for a stylist with some experience when phoning in. If I'd had more time, I would have stuck around and browsed the shop section, which has the expected hair products, but also jewelry and other fun items.

The waiting area has a gigantic chandelier, and the front desk is made from a wooden art piece that also serves as a product shelf and changing rooms-- you have to see it to believe it. But you can't mention Arrow Studio without talking about how fantastic Tiffany is. She used to cut my hair at her last employer before opening Arrow Studio, and I happily followed her, even though my drive is a bit longer now. It's worth it. Arrow Studio has custom-designed units at each haircut station that houses all the stylists' equipment, but also has a pull-out shelf for any personal items you bring (sunglasses, cell phone, etc.). There's also a coat rack near the front, which seems mundane, but I can't remember the last time I went to get a haircut and actually had someone take my coat. It's the little details that matter. The biggest downside is that parking in downtown Durham can be a doozy. But don't worry! There are two parking decks right beside Arrow, and you can get your ticket validated after your haircut. Check out Arrow Studio next time you need a haircut, coloring or styling. It's a much-welcomed addition to the blossoming downtown Durham homegrown business scene.

After doing some research, I called Arrow when it first opened at 9am to see if they could squeeze me in that day and lo and behold, they had space! My appointment was with Alex who is a Level 1 but honestly, if I didn't know that going into the appointment, I would have never known. She took the time to listen to exactly what I wanted, was super understanding and made me feel so comfortable in her chair. When it came to my cut, I had asked to dry cut it (I have naturally curly hair and I prefer stylists to cut it when it's straightened as that's how I normally have it styled), and it turned out perfectly. She kept my length, cut off the dry ends and it looks exactly as I want it to. The color - literally WOW. I have dark hair and I wanted something subtle and natural but still fun, and she did just that. I have never left any salon so happy and thrilled with how my hair looks. Alex, you are a gem and so fun to spend 3 hours with! My hair turned out so well, I will literally fly in from New York just to have her do it again. And my mom was so impressed that she's found her new spot (and a new stylist!) Thank goodness my other appointment got cancelled, I would have never found this amazing place!
