My wife and I needed a quick, quality cut during our visit to Durham, NC for a family funeral, so we found this salon online last night and booked an appointment for the soonest possible time. We got really lucky and were able to get in today right before the visitation, and we cannot emphasize just how much we loved this salon: the service was wonderful, from booking to arrival to the haircut and checking out. We both had the same stylist: William (I wish I got his last name because he deserves to be recognized!), and he gave us EXACTLY what we asked for. The man is an ARTIST, and this may very well be the best haircut either of us has ever had (and we love our hair!). We left wishing we lived up here so we could become regulars to Wavelengths! Having just moved to Durham and not knowing where to get a haircut in this town, I saw the Groupon deal for a $29 shampoo, cut, and style and thought that I was in for a bargain. I just want to preface this review by saying that I am trying to write this as objectively as possible. I really WANTED to like Wavelengths-- it's such a cute salon (great atmosphere with colorful walls and they even had a small shopping section in their store!), but in the end a salon can only be judged by the quality of 1) the haircut and 2) the experience of the haircut and both, for me, were very unsatisfactory :( The Groupon deal is ONLY good for Alex, a newcomer to the salon. Wavelengths told me that they were trying to build up her clientele, so that's why the established the Groupon deal for her. Alex is a super nice girl and really takes the time to listen to you. She was attentive when I told her what I wanted my haircut to be like. However, you can instantly tell that she is inexperienced-- for example, when she was cutting my hair, she clipped my earrings a few times and I left the salon with two throbbing ears. Her scissor-work is also rudimentary and she accidentally poked me in the scalp/face a few times during the haircut experience. Overall, my haircut quality is NOT great. I got my haircut yesterday and today, without any products or hairspray in my hair, I noticed that Alex had probably accidentally snipped pieces of my hair and gave me some major cowlicks. Also, my layers are uneven and this is especially noticeable when I tied my hair up into a ponytail and parts of it were (unintentionally) longer than the others. Again, I know this was probably an accident but it reflects on her lack of experience. Anyway, I wanted this review to be as fair as possible because I wish I knew this information before I went in for my haircut :( They told me she was a newcomer, but I assumed she had to have great credentials or experience to work at a salon like Wavelengths. First point, this place cuts men's hair hair as well as women's. I've gotten my haircut twice by Maria. She is very friendly and very good. She uses point cutting as a way of cutting down my natural waviness, but also convinced me to just go with the waviness instead of fighting it. Now my hair has a cool wave in it that looks like Ken doll hair, in a good way. They use nice shampoo and conditioner when they wash your hair. Good scheduling phone service. I had originally booked another salon (Moshi Moshi) for my wedding party and my hair and makeup, but they were charging WAY TOO MUCH money. So I called Wavelengths frantically in early April (for my memorial day weekend wedding), and luckily they were able to accommodate all 7 of us. Sherry did my hair and makeup for my wedding, and it was gorgeous!! My hair is wavy and very heavy, and she did wonders, putting it into a low curly wonderful up-do. It was perfect!! She also did my makeup (with little instruction from me) due to crazy relative drama, it was natural and lovely and not too over-done.. and it stayed put from noon until 4AM. I got a Ouidad (special curly hair) cut from Sherry, the owner and stylist, and was extremely satisfied. I've gotten my hair cut at the New York City Ouidad salon and Sherry did just as good a job, if not better. The salon is extremely nice and they use fantastic products when washing and styling hair. People expect most things in life to go right. When you get what you expected, its not usually surprising. When you end up with something unexpected, then things get interesting. I got an excellent haircut at wavelengths, and my curly hair always presents a challenge to the stylist cutting it. I also got a bleached shirt due to a little left over hair product on one of the chairs I was sat in. Excellent haircut = expected. New tie dye polo = not expected. I contacted the salon about my shirt, and they went above and beyond in their response. The situation was handled supremely. This attention to client satisfaction above all else is what keeps me loyal to an establishment. I have found my barber in Durham. read more

Like many others, I came here with a Groupon, for the $99 Brazilian Blowout. I will preface by saying this is my 4th Brazilian Blowout--all have been at different salons with different product, and this was not only the worst salon experience, but also the worst result. I have curly hair and have loved past treatments for reducing frizz and making my hair more on the wavy side than curly. After 1 week it was back to normal--AND I was bullied into spending $70 (!!!) on the shampoo and conditioner. I felt like I couldn't leave the place without buying it, which I don't appreciate...salons should be relaxing. Anyway, I usually don't buy the after products because I think they're a ripoff, but I needed shampoo and conditioner so figured I would try it. I would expect miracles, or at least maintenance, from $70 worth of product, but these don't even smell good and have done nothing for my hair. The stylist tried to be nice, but it was overall very fake conversation...for instance, she asked me three times where I was from (clearly wasn't really listening to me!) She also burned me several times with the dryer and with the iron and was very rough--never asked if she was hurting me. Salon has great potential and I gave 2 stars because I loved the decor...very nice building, decent location (despite lack of parking) and they played loud Top 40 music (I like that, other people may not). There is a large public parking lot nearby, and I was fortunate to get the last spot in it, otherwise--no idea where I would have parked. Lastly, I never carry cash, and could not tip on my card, yet I could purchase the exorbitantly priced shampoo/conditioner on my card (?) maybe this is normal practice, but it was inconvenient since they do obviously have the means to process CC payments, yet couldn't accept gratuity with them. Will not be back, even with a Groupon. Plenty of other hair salons offer similar deals, so I would suggest looking elsewhere. read more

Great space, welcoming staff, great technique. I don't even bother requesting a specific stylist since they are all that good. Or because I'm not that particular about my hair (I want ease, movement, and flexibility of styling). Also, love the Bumble and Bumble products they use. Price is pretty comparable to the rest of the area. UPDATE: Brittany saved my hair! I went to a different salon and asked for a chin-length bob. The stylist gave me a bob that looked cute for about a week, then It went bad. The stylist didn't put any shape or layering in, so I ended up with what would have become a mushroom/prince valiant 'do if Brittany hadn't saved me. She was patient and careful, adjusting as I made requests and giving me an awesome cut! I am a Wavelengths convert and will ask for Brittany everytime! read more

The haircut I got at Wavelengths was BY FAR the most expensive one I've ever gotten in my life. It was $40. I got one of the most experienced stylists to cut my hair right before they closed. He agreed to do it on the spot, but it doesn't sound like you can usually get a haircut without an appointment. That being said, it is also the best haircut I've ever gotten. I asked for 5 inches off with a bit of layering. A month later, the layers are still visible and give my hair a nice texture that wasn't there before. I used to always just try to get the cheapest haircut possible but I must say that you really get what you pay for here... I found gem of the hair salon by looking on the coupon and finding a groupon for a Brazilian hair treatment. I had my appointment scheduled for Wednesday at 330 with Alex! And boy was she a breath of fresh air. I normally hate going to a salon cause they rarely listen to what you want and take forever making it an all day even. Alex sat me down and asked me what I wanted with my hair (I have thin naturally unruly hair and I wanted it smooth and less work to flatten) she told me that the Brazilian would make my hair soft but it would keep the curl instead we decided to go with the Brazilian keratin treatment. She was efficient, friendly and very competent. She had my hair shampooed and was putting the keratin in my hair with in fifteen minutes of my appointment. She also cut my hair (I'm really bossy about it and she did exactly what I wanted and just cut the split ends) afterwards she blow dried and flattened my hair and flatten it even more (I like my hair super flat) She didn't even pressure me to buy additional hair products which I appreciated I hate going to a salon and getting bullied into buying hair stuff that I would never use! I will definitely return to wavelengths for the super customer service that Alex provided. Keep in mind they don't have a way to add tips to your credit card so bring cash to tip your stylist! read more

The owner of Wavelengths saw my last review and offered to reimburse me for the failed perms, and to give me a free deep conditioning + hair cut. I was a bit reluctant to return at first, but I'm glad I did! The owner was friendly and well-informed, and my hair was in SIGNIFICANTLY better condition after I left the salon. No more frizz! Also, apparently the stylist who gave me the bad perms no longer works at Wavelengths. I don't know that I'll ever be risking a perm again, and I no longer live in the area, but if I did I would not hesitate to return to Sherry at Wavelengths. read more

Went in for an eyebrow wax and walked out with no eyebrows. The length is now shorter than my eye itself and the width was reduced by about 3/4. I have to pencil in my eyebrows now because of it, something I've never had to do. And I found leftover wax on both bald eyebrows after I returned home. Save your eyebrows. After a couple botch jobs on my naturally curly mixed hair, I decided it was time to stop going just anywhere and to do some research for a cut that would be worth my money. I found that Sherry and Zuri at Wavelengths are Ouidad certified so I booked an appointment with Zuri. Zuri did an amazing job on my hair, listening to exactly what I wanted, and executing perfectly. Even though I hadn't booked a Ouidad cut, she did the Ouidad cut on my hair. $60 for such an amazing curly cut seems like a steal! Not only is Zuri skilled and professional, she is so sweet and patient and easy to converse with. The second time I went in, I was moving across the country to be with my boyfriend so I wanted to style straight. I wasn't even nervous about how the curly cut would turn out - I had that much confidence in Zuri after the first cut. Needless to say, she nailed it! Cut it exactly how I asked, styled it beautifully straight, and when I washed it, I absolutely love my curly cut (and so does my boyfriend)! And still a flat $60 for a wash, cut, and style. I had one bad experience getting my brows waxed (for the first and only time) where I walked out with one brow shorter than the other (right before my wedding! - I had to turn my head 3/4 for every picture). I do not recommend this salon if you need highlights. I went in to get my roots done and I've never in my entire life had such horrible work. The stylist decided to only put highlights where I part my hair ?? Which is so weird and made the way my hair looked when I put it up look horrible and uneven. They also used the wrong color and my highlights looked brassy and yellow. I decided to give them a chance to try to correct this and Megan did her best but the underlying color was so bad it still looks yellowy. Bottom line, these stylist don't go through any training required by the salon and it shows. I appreciate that they tried to fix it, but it didn't work. Will not be returning. The shop is a warm and comfortable oasis from my all-too-busy work life (although the reliable WiFi means that sometimes I slip up and bring my laptop with me). For years I have barely worn my natural hair out because no one was able to give me a cut that works for 3 different hair textures in my natural hair. I never got a 'style' just cut hair. Carrie did an amazing job with my hair! It's been hard to find someone whose reliable to cut my hair since moving here. She is attentive and takes her time to make sure she understands what youre looking for. She is also very friendly and makes you feel super comfortable. They are also taking as many precautions as possible with COVID- which I really appreciate! They sanitize between clients and make sure that the salon is organized in such a way that you're able to socially distanced. Everyone keeps their masks on. Wavelengths is the best! I wish I could give them 10 stars. I will not be going anywhere else to get my hair done. I have been to plenty of other salons in Durham, but Wavelengths is by far my fav. The atmosphere is great, the stylists know what they are doing, it's in a cool location, and most importantly: my hair always looks phenomenal when I leave here! I have tried a few different stylists here and they have all done an excellent job. I have a glass of wine (or tea if I have a meeting afterwards) and a relaxing experience every time I come to this salon (pro tip: sometimes you have to ask for the wine). The only con I would say is that sometimes they are booked up, so I have to make sure to call a week ahead or so sometimes to schedule an appointment. They say they have certain days that are better for walk-ins, but that doesn't work for me. Prices: not cheap, but totally worth it read more

Before finding Zuri at wavelengths I cannot remember the last time I left a hair salon with a smile on, and now I always do! I have difficult and curly hair and anyone who is curly knows it's rare to find someone who can cut curls well! Even more difficult to find someone who can give you a cut that looks great both curly and straight! I have also gotten two keratin express treatments with Zuri and so happy with the results.
