Passing through the area, so checked Google Maps for restaurants and so glad we found this place! The building itself is very old but renovated and gives off fantastic vibes. The staff is friendly and efficient and the food was incredible. So much so that we made a point to go again when we passed through and it was every bit as perfect. Small but precise menu with daily specials. The surf and turf combo with ribeye and jumbo shrimp was exceptional! This last time we went, I had a broken tooth and couldn't get to the dentist yet and the waiter recommended corn pudding as a side that would be easy to eat, and I'm glad he did because it was delicious and I would not have ordinarily ordered that from a menu! This is on the list of places we will go out of our way to visit occasionally (since we don't live close)! read more

Unfortunately, the fried oyster sandwich was inedible- there were large pieces of oyster shell in the fried oyster. The roll was too large and dry- unsure why they selected this option. Ordered the broccoli head- unfortunately the sauce that accompanied it was gloppy and lacking flavor. When I ate almost nothing served to me, the server didn't inquire - since we won't be returning, i didn't circle back to all these issues. My husband was satisfied with his crab cakes, but be aware , they're more like pancakes. When a seafood restaurant located on the Albermarle Sound and near the Atlantic, tells you they have NO local fresh fish on the menu, it's best to leave. And I should have left. There are few choices in Edenton on a Tuesday or Wednesday night and the best choice is The Heringbone Edenton. If you have to eat at the Heringbone every night, it's still better than eating at Waterman's on any night. The Waterman's menu is uninspired and limited and they can't even get the basics right. Asking how you'd like something cooked is just a formality, it's coming out well done no matter what. If you like frozen food defrosted in a microwave, this is your place. The ambience is ok, the service was fine, but the food is terrible. No amount of cutesy cocktails can overcome the platefuls of misery. The only edible food I was served was the corn pudding. Somehow, they got this right. Waterman's should re-open as a corn pudding themed restaurant and only serve corn pudding and drinks. read more

This place is recommended by locals, but beware. Many of the locals are very friendly, but some really just want you to spend a lot of money in town. The trolley tour driver literally told us to "Enjoy Edenton and spend a lot of money," twice as we were getting off the trolley. I think that's why this place is suggested by people. It's expensive and not good. The staff were very friendly, so that was nice. We were seated in the entry room, which is cold and lacks character. The other room looked like it may have had a better vibe, but I don't know. We shared the bang bang shrimp, which were just okay. Six fried butterfly shrimp drenched in sauce. I got the steamed crab meat and peeled shrimp with cheese potatoes and side salad. The salad was mostly shredded cheese from a bag. The potatoes were alright, but it is hard to mess up potatoes and cheese. The crab had bits of shell all in it, so I had to take each bit very carefully and pull shell out of my mouth. Nothing was seasoned at all. My husband had the ribeye, and it was disappointing. He asked for it medium, but it was so unevenly cooked that parts were well done and parts were medium rare. About a fifth of it was one single lump of fat...not a normal fat cap or marbling...just a HUGE piece of fat. I would have been embarrassed serving that steak to a friend in my home, let alone charging anyone for it. And they do charge for it, at a premium, and with a 3.5% surcharge for paying by card. The high price should have more than covered the card fees they pay considering the low quality of food. It sounds from some of the other reviews that the quality used to be worth the price. read more

Finally got to check out waterman's in my second home city (edenton) and gotta say it was the first time something in edenton has let me down. The positives: - The service was super friendly- our waitress was nice and attentive and we were seated quickly - the restaurant appeared to be fairly clean and spacious -the food came out as ordered -the waitress corrected the mistake by taking my meal off the bill, which made a huge difference -everyone else enjoyed their food The negatives -my meal (crab cake sandwich) came out about 10-15 mins after everyone else's -when I did finally get it, it was dry, burned, bland, and devoid of flavor (I assume that forgot it and speed cooked it under a press. This may have been the worst crab cake sandwich I've ever eaten, and this is a seafood restaurant, if I had paid for it I would have been livid. Overall: The crab legs & fish had good reviews, super friendly staff, but avoid the crab cake. Staff saved this and upped this to a 3 star review from an otherwise 1. Been in Edenton for a couple weeks for work, this being are second go at Waterman's...both time have great. My wife got the fish and chips and I had the scallops both were done right! Our family of 5 went on Mon 6/9 for my husband's birthday. Including the tip, our bill was over $250. My husband had the ribeye, which had no seasoning whatsoever. I had the crab stuffer flounder. Every bite I took had bones in it. The fish wasn't cleaned well. I pulled out at least 10 bones and placed them on the side of the plate. We notified our server and she apologized and that was that. Mind you, these are almost $40 or above plates. Very disappointed. We also ordered the broccoli crown with hollandaise sauce which was more like a gravy than sauce. But be aware, your credit card is not welcome here: 3.5% up charge for using a card. They would be better served to add that to the price of the meal....oh yes, they already did that. In town for business & thought I'd grab a bite here since it was one of the few places open in town. Went in for takeout & was directed by the hostess to the bar to place my order. Have eaten there before with a friend who was a local & the food was passable...just ok. Very few people had masks on...even people coming in & leaving the restaurant. Some of the serving staff had them on but the hostess & the guy taking phone orders did not or they didn't keep them on. No social distancing. People were seated in close proximity to each other & no one adhered to the 6' rule. Many servers/ staff passed within a foot of us while we were standing there. Was feeling extremely uncomfortable with everyone in close proximity especially with the rising covid cases. We were completely ignored even though we were clearly standing & waiting to be helped. Staff could've tripped over us based on the number of times they passed by. Guy who was taking phone orders made eye contact but still didn't acknowledge our presence. Needless to say, we are POC in a sea of white people. Maybe that's why we received glares from a few people. We walked out. I'll be taking my business elsewhere. read more

Our hostess couldn't even stand up or put her phone away and pretty much had us seat ourselves and then kind of threw the menus at us. When our waitress arrives she was super sweet and took great care of us. We started with the crab dip and it didn't really have a strong crab flavor. It kind of tastes store bought. I had the scallops with a Caesar salad and mashed potatoes. My food was good, but like I said, nothing special. I will say that I got a large portion of scallops for the price. My husband got the burger and he said that it was fine. I probably wouldn't come back. First day restaurants were open at 50% capacity after COVID 19 we ate here. Casual atmosphere. All the employees we dealt with were very nice and attentive. We sat at a small table close to one of the front windows giving us a slight view of the water. The table was wobbly but we made it work. We ordered the crabcake and tuna. Everything was cooked to perfection. The hubs loved the tuna and cheesy potatoes. He ordered the slaw too and said it was good but couldn't eat it after eating the potatoes and tuna. The crabcake was good but lacking a little something. I think I was expecting some old bay seasoning or something but it was still good. Also had the ceasar salad and the fries. The fries were awesome..really crispy. We will definitely come back here...i want to try the fish tacos! read more

You would be better served to remove credit card use fee and recover cost you are charged by credit card company by increasing the price of the food. By the way.... Your seafood is not up to par for being a coastal city. The crab cake was bland. The fried flounder was too breaded. We stopped in Edenton overnight and if you've never been to this absolutely gorgeous Southern Town you must go. I love it there. The place is all about fishing. Fishing. Anyhow, I forgot to take pictures but their seafood choices were great. My spouse ordered the catch of the day and it was excellent. We had some shrimp and they were good. I had crab cakes yummy and crablegs were ordered. All very tasty. Over-all we enjoyed our stay in Edenton immensely. Such a dreamy little place. read more

Cold, hard, and saturated in oil. We also ordered a pasta and shrimp dish with andouille sausage sauce. This does not mirror the reputation of one of the most historically beautiful cities in North Carolina. It is more than outdated ... and dirty feeling. Old is one thing, the smell of stale food is another. My meal was horrendous as was my husband's. I'm not snobby but this was disgusting. There is absolutely no cozy or beautiful atmosphere, just one of a really old building that is stuffy and unappealing. Edenton will only evolve with good food. It is a shame. read more

Really enjoyed the restaurant. Food was better than expected for a very small town, do yourself a favor if you plan to visit for dinner. Plan your reservation about 15 minutes after sunset. Walk down to the water,( about a five minute walk) and watch the sunset before you eat. Really sets the mood. Trust me it will make you look so good in front of your significant other. Located in the Historic district on the waterfront in downtown Edenton. Fantastic seafood, I had the fried Jumbo shrimp which were huge and cooked to perfection. Ernie had the fried sea scallops which were great as well. Their stuffed mushroom caps were loaded with crabmeat and very good as well. Ernie said the rum runners had a nice kick. The last time the service was not good. the hostesses preferred to sit down while on their phone snapchattiing. one of our meals came out a good 15 minutes after everyone else's food.
