I had never shot a gun before coming here (other than a small rifle in boy scouts), and probably had one of the best experiences of my life at this facility. I was pretty nervous about handling and shooting the firearms at first, but the staff there ensured safety by going over their rules and procedures. After being taught how to properly handle the guns, we started shooting different handguns at the paper targets. After feeling comfortable and confident with those, we moved on to using some bigger assault rifles and even got to try out their gatlan gun. When looking for a shooting range in the Reno area, this is exactly what I was hoping for. The outdoor experience is was nicer and more fun in my opinion. The staff here was great at knowing when to help out and when to give you space and let you figure things out on your own. I would 100% recommend this place and will be coming back here the next time i'm in Reno. I would suggest this as one of the safest shooting ranges and perfect for beginners. What a difference a year makes. Just a little over a short year ago I dealt with the biggest tyrant that the county could have placed at that facility. He ran us and so many others off. But now..... Now the county has turned the reigns over to private. The folks at Nevada Firearms Academy & Range have stepped up and have started to polish this diamond into the amazing luster it should have . New prone pads .50 decks available Targets out over a mile Classes and training And a group of RSO's that aren't there to yell and scream, but rather to give direction and assistance. Today was my first day at the Washoe County Shooting Facility. MANAGEMENT It seems to be actively managed by the staff of NFA (Nevada Firearms Academy) which has an indoor range. They are amazing there just as the they were here. I was confident in knowing that I'd feel safe as soon as I checked in for the first time at this facility knowing it was managed by NFA & I was not disappointed. ADMISSIONS All new visitors go through a basic breakdown of range rules that were very easy to understand, no confusing instructions just info that's straightforward & to the point. Any critically important rules were emphasized twice to express the seriousness of hazards if the rules were broken, but never felt intimidating. For $10 a day, you can enjoy the outdoor range with sunshade found throughout the bays. There's additional targets onsite to purchase. The bays are routinely swept to keep the brass off the walkways. RANGE SAFETY Every 25 minutes the range master turns the HOT range COLD & inspects each individual bay & firearm to ensure safety prior to entering past the redline to swap out your targets or adjust distance for your next round of practice. There is a steel dueling tree onsite for no additional cost to use. It operates on a first come first serve basis but people were at this range were rather friendly & asked permission to go next. BATHROOM CLEANLINESS The restrooms that were clean & operational. These restrooms were fully stocked with soap, paper towels & toilet paper which was expected & appreciated from management like NFA. I was shocked to see the water come out of the faucets to be just as clean stainless steel bowls being that this facility is located 30-40 minutes outside the city of Reno (ie. in the middle of nowhere.) AMENITIES There seemed to be vending machines onsite, but I didn't get to order any drinks from them. I'm sure they work just fine. If it's your first time going to this range, DEFINITELY make the drive out. I doubt you'll be disappointed. The staff & visitors were extremely cool. People were polite all around & this facility was clean with the exception of brass found on the dirt at the dueling tree. 10/10 I'll definitely be back. read more

This is such a nice range. It's big too! When you pull in there is an initial range right off to the right hand side this is for pistols. If you continue around to the back they have on of the longest rifle ranges I have personally ever seen. This is a walking range so make sure you are comfortable walking your target back how ever many yards you would like. To the left of the long rifle range there are two additional pistol ranges. I believe the far left is for police training and the immediate left is for conceal carry training and private lessons. There are bathrooms right behind the long rifle range that are clean and comfortable to use. The actual shooting area is shaded and clean. There are sitting areas for observation and family and friends. There is ample parking and they do have handicap parking. All and all I would say this is a great range to shoot at. It's not too close to town which I would argue is the only drawback. It is outdoor so you are at the mercy of the elements, but I prefer shooting outdoors so I love it! read more

I'd give it 2.5 stars if I can, but rounding it down due to the overall less than average experience. I've been here many times, and it's always the same experience. The range itself is excellent. Great range with gongs 300 yards and out for long range shooting, great shooting tables, distances for targets. RSOs that are very vigilant to maintain safety. The bad : The RSOs, mainly the main RSO in the booth, is always sarcastic and talks down to the customers. I wouldn't be surprised if he has scared his fair share of new shooters from the range and from shooting overall. Could stand to be a bit more professional, and if he has an issue with anything to not be arrogant about it. I am an experienced shooter as far as shooting ranges go, always follow all their rules, but still he finds things to embarrass me in front of other shooters, and just be inappropriate. Go to the Carson range. Their RSOs are just as well trained but more friendly, range is cheaper, just wish they had steel to shoot out to 300yd, so I just bring my own steel to shoot...and cheaper too. read more

Indoor ranges are nice, but there's something awesome about the feeling of shooting outdoors. In Nevada we're fortunate to have sooooo much BLM land available to enjoy, and plenty of it is well outside of congested areas where shooting is permitted. All you have to do is hop in the truck, head a little ways out of town, set up your targets and it's go time. But each time I did that, I'd always worry about the safety factor, both for myself and those at the end of the bullets path. All it takes is a ricochet at the wrong angle and it's game over. Not cool. Fortunately, we've got this beautiful outdoor shooting facility out near Pyramid Lake to call our own. The range is controlled by two friendly range masters who insure that everyone is kept safe at all times. For $8, you can rent a lane for the afternoon, $.50-$1 gets you a target, tape and stand to put it on, and for $2 bucks more you can rent a spotting scope to see where you're hitting. Bring your own gun(s) and ammo, and you're all set. This range is setup for handguns and rifles. For the rifles, they've got targets out to 1,000 yards and beyond! You can set a target of your own, or with the right rifle, shoot for the steel targets and listen for the hits! They've also got another range that is used for drills and classes put on by private companies. Even though it's kind of far, and I could just roll out into the hills, I really enjoy coming here to shoot. It's safe, controlled, and appropriately managed. I went to the range today with my wife and daughter for the first time. I'm a pretty experienced shooter and I saw nothing but safety first, good information on how the range operates. What we really liked was the time period of shooting with a 2 minute announcement that there would be a cease fire with time to put new targets up. The range was clean, organized. I didn't realize how much I appreciated it until it closed for a month due to staffing issues as Jim, the rangemaster for many years and Ron, the primary volunteer both retired at the same time. They did a good job of running a good, safe range and I wish them both the best in their retirement. Went there on reopening day and the new staff seemed well in control and didn't miss a beat. One change I also like is that you can now pick whichever table you want to shoot from instead of having one assigned to you. Everything else seems the same. Long distance gongs are still out there and fun and challenging to shoot at. Best range in Northern Nevada. read more

I've been on shooting ranges a time or two. I've worked on them as an Instructor too, not to toot my own horn. So, all being said, I've got a better understanding than many of how a range like this one should be operated, and two thumbs up to the folks that built, maintain, manage and volunteer to work to ensure the safety (number one mission!) and overall positive live fire experience is the outcome. I've been here about 5 times. Each visit was relaxed, the staff and facility are darn nice, and I find it relaxing to shoot a few rounds of ammo. It's really nice that this range is available since I dont want the liability of starting a brush fire out in the desert....lol. read more

There's a reason most law enforcement agencies come here for their range training. We had our last qualification yesterday and I'm always excited to sling some lead at this range. They have everything anyone could want at one location, small arms ranges, long range ranges with gongs at marked distances, etc. The only downside to this range is also it's upside; it's outdoors. The wind out there is sometimes intense and unwelcoming but it's nice to be outside in the great outdoors as well. I was here for multi-state competitions on a monday and tuesday. Nothing like 90 degree summer heat (at least it's dry heat) beating down on you as your trying to figure out why your 600 yard shot went 2-feet to the right all of a sudden. The winds are a challenge here, in the morning it is pretty calm. But as it reached 10-11am it starts, coming from pyramid lake and by noon, on monday it was 30mph, on tuesday it was a back and forth (From west to east) 15-20mph, that explained the 2 foot shot. The facility is a pretty expansive place, they have areas for every style of pistol or rifle shooting. PPC- Pistols, where the targets turn for a period of time, IPSC- the run and gun speed pistoling to long range precision 1000 yard matches. I didn't see any shotgun skeet/trap ranges though. At the public range though, there is metal gongs placed well out there probably to 550 yards or so. It's always nice to hear the bang, the zip, and the tiny clang at the 550 yard plate. From the casinos to the shooting facility took about 35 minutes. i was actually zoned out on the drive to the range. When you've past civilization and there is nothing but brushy desert landscape, rocky red-brownish plateaus,and fluffy white clouds on deep blue sky, its quite beautiful. I heard there is someone selling food on the weekends, on special days your own your own. On those two days of competition, i was powered by 1$ sausage mcmuffins. A few words of widsom: -Bring water, lots of it. -Since the altitude is about 4200 ft, the air is thinner than at sealevel. With that, the adjustments needed for elevation changes are less. Best public outdoor range I've been to between Utah and Nevada, especially for the Reno-Sparks area. It's a little bit of a drive at about 30 minutes from central Sparks and 45 from Reno, but its worth it if you want a good range. You can find all the details in most other reviews, but I'll restate them since a few of those are somewhat old. Entry is $8 for an adult and I was able to rent a spotting scope from them for an additional $2. It's not the nicest scope, but it worked for what I was doing; which was sighting in a rifle at 100 yards. I called and asked if they accepted credit or debit before coming and was told that they DO, but cash is easier for them to worry about. The reason for this is because the system they use is based wirelessly, and sometimes there could be issues with connection so BRING CASH. There's plenty of places to stop by an ATM on the way up there so there's hardly an excuse not to have any. The shooting area is covered, which is especially nice on hot summer days like today. They also have benches where you can sit at while firing. Target distances are from 15, 25, 50, 100, 200-1000 yards with 100 yard increments from 200 up. They offer boards and tape for you to stick a target on if you're planning on sighting or shooting within 200 yards. All the targets past 200 are steel as well so you won't be doing any walking out there. Gun and range safety is a HUGE priority here. I made idiotic mistakes twice regarding this, and I was scolded pretty badly by the guy who runs this place (Jim?). He had his reasons and I fully agree with him so I'm not upset; just be sure not to mess up like I did or you'll end up leaving a bad impression. The other volunteers that come here are also a big help when coming up and down the range, ensuring that all weapons are clear before allowing anyone to go past their yellow line unless you're shooting. Be sure to say thanks to them if you're there. Overall, the price is fair and the quality of the range is good. I'll come back here if I ever need to sight in another rifle again. read more

Great range very very affordable, great parking, range is clean, good staff, easy access for rest rooms. Just make sure you bring your weapons in cases and bring cash. The price is $8 for the range fee and ¢.50 per target. The targets are pretty nice too and the boards you stick them on are nice and sturdy. The range officers are friendly and they know what they are doing. You will feel safe coming here. I don't usually give out 5 stars but this place really deserves it. They have targets there if you didn't bring any, they have spotter scopes, tape, and other things you would need to have a great time. Coming to this range with a great attitude will help your experience. I hope this review helps and have a wonderful time at this range. Went out here with my buddies and it was a great time. Everyone goes out at the same time to put up targets and the range officers give you ample time to get them up and ready. You can buy targets there or bring your own. Also the range master will give you assistants with your fire arms if you are having problems. Also, don't be afraid to ask for help. It is much safer to ask for help than to make a mistake. We wouldn't want anyone to get hurt. We are all there to have fun so don't be afraid to ask for a little help. Just notify the range officers and they can help. They have bathrooms near by and plenty of parking. They also have another range for pistol if you want to shoot competition USPSA, action pistol, etc. Matches happen usually on the weekends and WNPL has their competitions dates up on their website. You can also sign up for them there. This are $20-25 I think. I don't remember for sure but bring cash. I would highly recommend being cash. One of the nice things about this range is that the shooting areas are covered so even if it's raining, hailing or snowing you can still shoot. Only the areas that are designated for prone shooting are not covered but other than that most of the shooting areas are covered. You can shoot pistol, shotgun and rifles on this range. There are regular targets you can shoot or buy and there are also steel targets you can shoot that start at 300 meters. I think the last steel target goes out to 800 meters. This very well kept shooting range is located about an hour north of the city of Reno itself. At the invitiation of combatives/tactical shooting instructor Gabe Suarez, I attended a two day course at this range as his guest a few weekends back. Due to the high wind conditions and the lack of suitable ancillary range gear at the range itself, this class had a bit of a troubled start . But thanks to the diligence of the class host and plenty of help from the folks working at the range we got things squared away within a short period and the next day and a half proceeded without a hitch. In addition to their invaluable help during the start of class the rangemasters were also cool enough to wait around until class ended despite the fact that class did not conclude until well after their shift was over. For the Urban Rifle Gunfighting Course we used one of the 75yd ranges though they have nearly a half dozen other ranges including a 1,000 yard rifle range which I hope to be able to use the next time I'm back in Reno. read more

Range-masters & volunteers are always friendly and offer help/advice with shooting. Safe environment with range going "cold" every 15 minutes, allowing for down-range target manipulation. Hear me out I was greeted by J Leary, who immediately gave me an attitude when I asked if it was "Eight bucks right?" "Well I don't know, what did the google say? It's only you right?" With an eye roll. Basically it just seemed like he would rather be anywhere else. And who gave me the most hateful look for saying Gracias. And who said I was "Walking too fast for him" and "making him nervous" just when I was walking from my bag to the target stands to attach my paper plate. So at least in Learys case, just another 60 pounds overweight range officer who thinks he is special forces. As for the range, there are tools to clean up and the target stands are decently maintained, and the safety is good. But for eight dollars of my cash and an hour drive I will proceed to keep building berms and shooting into those on my own in the woods, instead of dealing with some clowns and a fee. It was enough for me to make this just to review it. Thanks but no thanks. Just shoot into berms or the proper areas so you don't start fires, clean up your trash, and make a good name for us so we aren't stuck at places like that. read more

Just a fabulous facility, they will provide everything except guns and ammo at a very reasonable price. I rented a spotting scope for a full day it cost me 7 bucks. They have clean restrooms (not port potties), picnic table, soda machine and all on paved roads. Covered shooting positions are splinter free with adjustable seating and they provide shell catching nets for the semi auto shooters to keep hot shells off your neighbor. This place is great! I headed out to the range with two friends a couple weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised. This was a first for all of us. We were greeted by the rangemaster, Jim, who was very friendly and helpful. He welcomed us into the shack to give us a quick run down of the rules and the range in general. $6 covers the "range fees", paper targets are available for next to nothing, you can rent a spotting scope for $2, and hearing and eye protection is available to borrow. The facility was very clean, and provided everything you could need. Targets set from 25 yards out to 1000 yards. I can see going back frequently. Much safer, cleaner, and easier than shooting anywhere else. read more

We stood outside and when we walked in the building he asked if we were lost and told us to wear ear protection and spoke in the third person. Then just walked past us and didnt pay attention at all. This is a great shooting range. I wish there is one like this in the Bay Area. The range has enough lanes to accommodate all shooters on weekends specially without feeling crowded. The ROs are friendly and will explain to you in details the rules and regulations if you have not been to a gun range. Exactly what we're looking for in a range: no fuss or frills, just a safe designated place to shoot - bonus that it has a decent amount of shade and quite a few benches. One of the range masters seemed a bit grumpy at first, but he relaxed after he saw we were following his safety instructions, and was quite friendly after that. It helps if you clean up your own brass (which you should do anyway). The soda machine has apparently been out of order for years, so bring your own beverages. read more

Just some FYI's about the Washoe County Regional Shooting Facility. The public range is open Friday-Monday EXCEPT holidays. Winter hours of operation are 8:30 am- 3:30pm. Summer hours are 8am-4pm. If the weather is looking sketchy, please call ahead. The weather north of Reno can be quite different than in town. The range rarely closes, but if the wind makes it unsafe or there is a lot of snow, it will close for everyone's safety. Current prices as of 1/1/13 are $8/adult and $5/youth and senior. There are also year passes available for $140/adult, $100/youth and senior. Targets, ear muffs, ear plugs, and spotting scopes are available for purchase or rent for a nominal fee. M/C and Visa are now accepted, though cash is appreciated. There are target points at 15, 25, 50, 100, and 200 yards with gongs at 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, and 954 yards. There are 40 benches with room on the ends for prone fire. Full auto is allowed with proper paperwork for your gun(s). It is requested that large calibers such as .50BMG are not used on the gongs; they don't last very long with that punishment! Staff strives to provide a safe, accessible, and fun time for shooters of all ages and skill levels. Unsafe firearm handling will not be tolerated by anyone, and those who persist to behave in an unsafe manner will be asked to leave the facility. Remember, you might think you're being safe but the person next to you who just saw the hole in your muzzle might not think so! Everyone deserves to feel comfortable and safe at this range. Target breaks are taken every 15 minutes; specific instructions will be issued at each break. No one is allowed in front of the yellow line or near benches during a target break. If you need to retrieve brass, dropped items, or set up or take down a chronograph, please let staff know and they will instruct you when to do so. If you have not been to the range before, please leave your firearms in your vehicle and meet with staff first to get all the range rules.
