What a great facility! I highly recommend this to anyone in the area over the other Washoe County outdoor option near Pyramid Lake. Nestled amongst the mountains just outside of Carson City proper you're surrounded by Nevada's natural beauty out here, which is a great way to start. From there you've got a wide open parking area with plenty of spots right behind the range areas, well kept concrete walkways and accessible ramps, large shade areas over shooting benches with adjustable stools, and ample, well kept ranges with multiple lanes to accommodate several shooters at once. Best of all there's a range master who moves between the rifle and pistol ranges making sure everyone is staying safe and keeping the areas clean of brass to avoid any issues. The rifle range was great with target stands available and settings at 50 yard increments. They offer seated and prone lanes as well, which is great depending on what you're training. The pistol range has targets at closer increments as well with large tables to set up on, allowing you to spread out and prepare multiple weapons at once. Though we didn't use it, they also have a range with private bays that you can use to train up close, 3-gun etc. Nice to know they have that option! Nice clean, well maintained outdoor range with range safety operator. They have 2 clean stationary port-a potties adjacent to the short and long range. The only think that made me cringe and really feel uncomfortable was the safety range officer did NOT wear a mask and came by several times to talk to us. Although he was a nice man, he came within 2 feet of our faces and did not mind physically distancing at all. There are signs posted related to COVID and suggestions to wear masks. read more

Passing the landfill, you don't expect much to appear re: a firing range. There are actually 3 different ranges-1 for long range, another for pistols/short range, and even one for classes/open range! The facility is very well kept and safely run. The range officer was very helpful and friendly! There are many bays available for open shooting. You don't have to wait long for one to open up. Very convenient to Gardnerville, Dayton and Virginia City. Only $5 per person too! read more

This place rocks! I went here for the first time with an out of state friend (California) and we couldnt have had more fun! We actually went mid week, and there were like 1 other shooter. Its $5 unlimited time for Nevada residents and $10 for out of state shooters. There is a range guy on site and he was really cool and informative. You have your choice of ranges from a shaded/covered rifle range (50 - 300 yards), shaded/ covered pistol range (not sure the length, we didnt use it), and a few open bays (i would say its at lest 50 yards). There are stands there, and you have to bring your own paper targets. I dont think you are allowed to bring electronics or glass, so you wont dirty up the range. You can bring water and drinks in the open bays, i dont think you can bring water into the shaded ranges. You can also smoke in the open bays. The open bays also allow you to smoke! There is a restroom on property as well. Pretty awesome! Have some respect for fellow shooters and you will have a great time here. read more

After Carson City Landfill employees began to notice bullets dropping around them from the nearby Rifle Range (and those were only the ones they did notice) the City restricted RR operations to Sunday only until appropriate mitigation measures could be put into place. On 2/2/2020, the Board of Supervisors approved spending for major renovations there and, baring weather related construction delays, the redesigned, fully staffed and much safer facility should be open for business, 7 days a week, in March. Rates on the City website. There was great rejoicing at the Landfill and the uncomfortable bullet-resistant vests have been retired. read more

This place is amazing because it's free, which after purchasing your firearms and ammo, is a nice relief. The downside, it's pretty much always busy. However, each time I've gone, the other patrons have been kind and respectful. It's clean and well kept. HIGHLY recommend. read more

Great open place to go shooting with plenty of room and parking for everyone. They have dedicated fields/ranges for handgun and rifle shooting. The place is clean and has many tables provided. However, one thing that bothered me was that there were a couple of horses just walking around in the background on the long range field. Don't know where they came from but it would not be a good idea to shoot with them around i would guess. This was a Tuesday and there was only one other guy shooting a handgun on the smaller field. Bottom line, for a free range this place is great! Easily accessible with plenty of open field to shoot. UPDATE: Went there on a Saturday (Apr. 16th) around noon and that place was packed. Apparently they had some kind of gun show going on and a lot of different guns were being used and displayed. However, a few tables were available and we didn't have any trouble getting right to it. read more

Went there for the first time Sunday 9/6/2020 it was a great experience. We went a little early and there was a line to shoot but once we got in we had a spot. They followed the 6 foot rule so it was every other space available to shoot. Can't wait to go again!!! The gentlemen that was there watching the area was very nice and friendly!!! read more

Whoever decided to make this place only open on sundays is useless. I love shooting here but only during the week when all the people are gone. Sundays only is terrible. I like this shooting range a lot. It's outside and away from everything. Besides having a rifle range with cement tables protected by overhangs from the sun and rain, there is also a shorter pistol range, with the same overhead protection. Then, off to the side are several fairly new (in the last several years anyway) individual 'shooting lanes' consisting of berms that have been set up between each lane. This is my favorite section to shoot because you can 'move' at your own pace and change targets without everyone else having to stop shooting. And, you meet the nicest, most polite people at a gun range (smile here...). read more

My limited senior abilities allowed me access to this nice open shooting range 7 days a week...No more! It's been suspended to a few hours a day in the evening when the wind is high and not acceptable for precision shooting. Saturday is allocated to clubs and Sunday has too many first timers that's crowded with little supervision...time will tell. Idaho being more conducive to my likes and friendly to shooters as once was here. So a dozen or more of my staff will also be leaving with me. This is a place for men to expel their excess testosterone and live out their dreams of being in a real life Call of Duty. Being from California and someone who just shot an AK47 here, I won't comment on the people shooting the machine gun and whether or not it seemed unnecessary. From my limited gun knowledge this place seem like a great place to shoot especially since it's outdoors and easier on your ears. People here seem very respectful as well. Not to mention it's completely free, all you have to do is post up and start shooting. It was extremely awkward for me since I grabbed my glock, started blasting sideways and screamed out "My fo-fo make sure all yo kids don't grow". A pretty scuzzy & wretched dung heap of a shooting range which is more of a landfill in the making and garbage dump than an actual faclility for serious shooters. Unlike some of the private shooting clubs I belong to this one is open to the public and therefore no one's really being paid to upkeep the place. Also, a certain percentage of the folks who frequent this facility are less interested in serious shooting and are more about just plinking at their old TVs, auto bodies, fridges, glass bottles ( or whatever other Hee Haw horsehit strikes their fancy) and since many of these same people do not pick up after themselves --this range has become something of an impromptu junkyard. In addition, many of these weekend warriors displayed some seriously careless and unsafe gun handling practices. That said, everyone was pretty good about regulating themselves and cooperating when it came to abiding by ceasefire periods and allowing for interested parties to go downrange to set up/check targets. One of the other few things I liked about this range was the fact that it was possible to shoot out to 200yards which is always a plus for us rifle shooters. read more

Nice facility... I set up targets to shoot at the middle station on the covered portion of the range and someone in the first lower pistol pit was a new shooter with a fully automatic AK and couldn't handle the recoil properly causing rounds to ricochet over the top of the back stop hill narrowly missing my son, myself and 2other shooters. We moved and had a good shoot. So watch for possible dangerous situations before you set up. read more

What a difference a year makes. This range went from 5 stars to 1. Extremely limited hours. Limited types of guns. Can't do this and that. It seems that Carson City wants to close this range. Oh well. Good thing there are so many other places to go shooting in Nevada, but a real shame that such a safe and organized location has been spoiled. read more

Carson City Range is as good as it gets, and my favorite place to shoot, because it is unsupervised. Like many other parts o Nevada f it can get windy here and cold in the winter time. I use the bays, I've pulled my SUV in to the bay and sat in the back seat with the tailgate open and had a great time shooting rimfire steel targets. Try doing that at a supervised range. Of course if your the kind ot shooter who like to shoot on a supervised square range. Your most welcome to go to one. read more

For a free shooting range you really can't go wrong here. The shooting positions for the formal rifle and pistol ranges are very well thought out and shaded with a concrete floor. The separate shooting stalls allow for easy movement, different placement of targets, and a more private setting to train or plink. There's plenty of parking and the other people who are shooting there seem to be polite and respectful of each other the vast majority of the time. I would recommend using this range facility as long as you understand that there are no bathroom facilities on site and you will need to bring your own targets and target stands. Just make sure that you stay respectful of other shooters and clean up your garbage before you leave so we can all continue to enjoy this wonderful shooting range. read more

I shoot at this range on weekdays not in any competition, but do shoot load development, for zeroes and practice at the (somewhat limited available distances) out to 300 yards for several calibers of rifles I own. I also shoot on Sundays in the organized Mini-Palma matches that the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Club runs on the range.The range is not controlled by a paid county or Carson City employed RSO or a range master, so is open to all and a good place to shoot. MOST of the folks that go there to shoot understand that SAFETY is the top priority and follow the very simple rules to ensure that everyone IS and FEELS safe while on the range. Mostly the rules Posted both online AND at the range!!) are common sense, and the way to be safe and have fun is to use common courtesy and good range etiquette. As I sad, most folks that go there to shoot DO conduct themselves in this manner and everyone coordinates and cooperates very well with all others there.. HOWEVER, there are often a few people that, for some reason, feel that they are too good for or just way above following the rules. Today, for instance, there were several people there that just didn't seem to understand that when others are downrange, one must stay behind the blue safety line. These guys seemed to think that they were being "all safe and whatever" and that it didn't matter that the people down range would have NO IDEA what they were up to, except that it was obvious they were still messing around with the (whatever) stuff on their shooting benches. I'm sure that these yayhoos wouldn't enjoy being downrange while others were doing whatever at/on the shooting benches, but they seemed to think that everyone should be just fine with, and make an exception for, and trust THEM for some reason. Go figure, huh? When asked to stay clear of the benches and behind the blue line while people were downrange, one of them actually got all huffy....as if everyone should just trust HIM for some reason. He either did not care about others or was just completely unable to understand how people should conduct themselves and act around each other. I don't know...maybe he couldn't read and never had anyone explain how grown ups act, but he sure thought that HE was some kind of a "special case". read more
