A couple of weeks before the July 4th weekend, one of my friends suggested making a last minute trip to Reno for some gambling and golf. Which made perfect sense since nothing celebrates the birth of our great nation like losing money frivolously and smacking balls with clubs. At over 4,000 feet up. On the side of a giant hill/mountain. In 95 degree weather. Without much of a breeze nor a cloud in sight (at least, until the last hour or so). Boy was it hot... Weather aside though, Wildcreek is actually a pretty decent place to play. The course is relatively well maintained, the pro shop is small but stocked, the clubhouse has a large grill/bar area, the carts aren't too shabby, and there's a good number of stalls at the range (there's also chipping and putting areas). Granted, we did encounter some brown areas of the course, as well as sections of the fairway and rough that were nearly rock hard, but none of that was unexpected to see considering the drought. As for how Wildcreek plays, I'd say it's rather true for the most part (as in, it does what you'd expect). It may be mostly made up of par-4s, but the total yardage is longer than a lot of the courses I've played on in the Bay Area. Given its location, elevation plays a role on nearly every hole in some shape or form (whether hitting uphill or playing the kicks/slopes), but several also incorporate a mix of traps, water hazards, and/or blind tee shots (like on the 18th). If there was a silver lining to playing in the heat (okay, to be honest, it was only bad for the first hour or so), it's that there were hardly any other people playing while we were there. So, not only did it feel like we had the place to ourselves, but we were able to play at our own pace, which resulted in one of the shortest rounds we've ever played! Plus, at $39 a person (which included carts), the rate (via Golf Now) felt quite reasonable, especially for a holiday weekend. All in all, while Wildcreek didn't impress us as much as Red Hawk did the very next day, it's still a pretty fun course that's worth a go (loved the view from the top of the 6th, by the way). That's even despite losing more than our fair share of golf balls. Then again, I might have felt differently if I hadn't finished ahead at the Blackjack tables...

Of course this is not the nicest golf course you can go to. It is not priced that way either. However, for the price, play ability, challenge, and views it is hard to beat. It would seem that after reading some of the reviews that quite a few people were expecting a personal assistant, wind protection, free drinks, unlimited balls, lush tropical grass, a private round with no other golfers on the course and a perfectly flat golf course that plays like mini golf their whopping $30. Try Disneyland because I have never seen that in a golf course in the high desert. Back in the real world this is a golf course that isn't driven by stuffy rules and occupied by stuffier people. This is a friendly local spot that has a bit of challenge, a lot of fun, subject to high winds, lots of golfers, and outstanding views along the way. If you are looking for Montreux, go to Montreux. If you are polite and can conduct yourself without having to call a ranger every other hole because someone's shirt came un-tucked or they shot a mulligan without the express written consent of the PGA, then this is a nice place to play. PS. Save Wildcreek.

This isn't the nicest golf course I've been to, but it does the job. I have yet to play the championship course, and have only played the executive par 3 course, so this review will only be based on that. There is always a lot of parking here, which a plus as I hate having to park so far and lug my golf clubs all the way to the clubhouse. As far as the clubhouse goes, it is fairly small. It has a bar area in the back, seating in the center and a small shop. The driving range doesn't seem like it is well taken care as most mats lack those plastic tees but the chipping and putting greens are in good condition. I really liked that the executive course was challenging with the water and sand traps, but still allowed someone to play a decent game for those that don't have a strong long game (aka me). Playing the executive course, you definitely get a bang for your buck at only $15 per person and $4 for a pull cart. You are able to get a golf cart for $15 a person, but the course is so short, it's not even really worth it. The only downside I have is there are so many squirrels and gophers, seems like almost the entire reno population of squirrels live there. This is not the golf course's fault but it's easy for your ball to accidentally roll into a gopher hole (not exactly the hole in one I'm looking for). Overall, I will be back, probably next week! Happy golfing!

Probably the greenest fairway on the course

Well since there is no snow up here in winter and 70 degrees out we decided to find a golf course that was open, this course would probably be a nicer course in the spring if it was green but in February it was dry as a bone, the greens are tough. It was 45 bucks and cart path only. If this was 20'bucks then my review would Be more Stars but not worth the price. Water the dam course looks like a desert.

    Perfect Sunday morning

But being a nine hole course the cost is out of whack and should be adjusted. There is no senior discounts which is unfortunate. Also no club house and eatery. Course has seven of the original front, nine holes and two from the back nine. It is a very hilly course, and the gas golf carts were able to handle the hills quite well. The course was in great shape, and they have concrete cart paths throughout. One of the best things about playing this course is the view you get of the Valley below and all the surrounding mountains. I enjoyed playing the course. It is well laid out and even though there are a lot of houses around the course they never presented any problem. I would like to see more distance markers. None of our GPS devices were able to find the course so we were always wondering how far out we were. There is also a driving range available which has toptracer which allows the player to track distance, height and ball speed.

It gets worse. Can it?! Yup. . …read more UPDATE: I Tried to Let This Go. They Didn't. After my original review about being sold a "custom" set that turned out to be badly fitted with mismatched shafts, I honestly planned to move on--especially if the shop would just pick up the phone and try to make it right. I called. More than once. No call back. No email. Nothing. If they had contacted me, I would have gladly updated--or even removed--my original review and said they stood behind their work. Instead, here we are, and things got worse. When I went to sell the clubs, the buyer pointed out: Two 50° wedges in the set (one graphite shaft, one steel). Why? What I thought was a 45° wedge is the exact same loft as my pitching wedge. So yes--I was sold two pitching wedges as well. Add that to the already mismatched shafts and bad fitting, and this "custom set" is a mess. And still: no response from the shop after multiple attempts to reach them. --- Lessons? Also a bust. I sent my wife here for an 8-week lesson package. When we finally played together, I immediately noticed her grip was way off. I asked her about it--she said, "We never talked about grip. He just kept telling me to swing." Grip is Golf 101. After eight weeks? Come on. When we addressed it in person, the instructor finally said, "Let's take a look at your grip," like it was new information. My wife also told me he was flirtatious, pushy, and that on more than one session he smelled like liquor. She was uncomfortable. We stopped going. --- Bottom line: I gave them a chance. They didn't take it. This follow-up exists because they never tried to fix the problem. Between the botched club build, zero follow-through, and questionable instruction, I can't recommend this place for fittings or lessons. Buyer beware.

Our courses up here are closed for winter and we make several golf road-trips to the Reno/Carson area during the winter to play golf. Four of us were looking forward to playing at Wolf Run. I had to PRE PAY to book the tee time, which I was not pleased about doing, but I know this is common from golf courses "managed" by groups like Duncan Golf. An hour before we were to leave on our road-trip, one of our guys texted and said he was very ill and wasn't going to make the trip. No problem I thought. I'm sure Wolf Run AKA Duncan Golf would be able to issue a refund, a voucher for a future round or something so I would not be out $65. We arrived and the golf shop employee greeted us. After giving him our tee time info, I stated that one of our guys was sick and couldn't make it. He didn't even look at me and stated flatly "It's prepaid." I asked if there was a way to receive a refund. The golf shop robot repeated "It's prepaid." He moved around the counter and was looking out the window to grab our cart numbers when my buddy in the shop with me said, "There's nothing you can do?" Shockingly (not) we received "It's prepaid" again. We went out and had a great round on a gorgeous day. Unfortunately, the cloud of stink from Duncan Golf and the golf shop robot remained beyond our round. Thank you for nothing Duncan Golf. You kept my $65 for no product/service provided.
