This park is so awesome! The dinosaurs are the main attraction for the kids but as a parent I love the shade, the state of the art bathrooms and walking trails. It's so nice to have such clean facilities with locks on the door that work properly. Unfortunately so many of the bathrooms at public playgrounds are a disaster but that's not the case here. The picnic benches are close by so if you want to sit and watch your children play you are still within reach. The walking trails go on for miles and are all paved. Great for walking, running, riding bikes or scooters. On the other side of the park there are basketball courts, workout stations, a dog park and a baseball field. This is a great part to consider if you want to reserve a shelter for a party. Everything about this park is beautiful and historic. read more

Great park! We found this park a few years ago and have loved it ever since! It's a large playground area with dinosaurs incorporated into the playground equipment. My kids love this park! There is a bathroom that is close and very clean along with shelters around the park as well. There is a basketball court a bit down and I believe a dog park. There are trails along the park as well. We had a blast. We pack our lunch and make it a fun day at the dinosaur park. If you're thinking to go..go! It's great for families and people just wanting to walk trails. read more

Great place to get a cut. Lively atmosphere and not a seat open in the house on Saturday morning so i definitely suggest making an appt. From what i saw walk-ins were waiting anywhere from 10-20 minutes, which really isn't bad for the weekend. Alex Gulledge did a great job on my hair. Perfect scissor cut, and had me in and out in 20 minutes even though my hair was pretty shaggy. Reasonable prices for an excellent cut. read more

Decent park with a pretty nice playground. They have been fixing it up but by bit over the years, but it's still fairly janky and with no signage, as others have mentioned. Lots of greenway for walking around. The old entrance I used to take to get in is now blocked at the parking lot by a guardrail. Kind of an oasis in an otherwise sketchy area. Some nice houses at the top of the hill. Hopefully they got good security systems. read more

Great little dinosaur playground in the shade! Equipment is a little worn, and a bit of a walk from the parking area esp if you have small children. It was a little tricky to find because the signs directed you more towards the dog park but it's the same area, the playground is just tucked away up in the woods. read more

This is a great park. The photos are spot on. The dinosaurs are fun to climb on and look at. It was a cream park that under normal (non-pandemic) times has bathrooms nearby. It's tucked into a nice little neighborhood and even has a sweet walking path around it. Kids and dog enjoyed the visit. read more

The dog park has seen some updates since some of the other reviewers have been. They now do have two separate areas for big dogs and small dogs (under 25 pounds). I went on a weekday in November and the place was pretty dead. There were a few people riding their bikes and running on the trail but only one other person made their way over to the small dog area. My puppy enjoyed the sand pit that they have and I did appreciate that they had a water station. There was a bit more activity over in the large dog area but only two people. If you are looking for a spot to bring your dog where it isn't crowded I would suggest heading on over here during a weekday in the fall. I did feel a touch uncomfortable with like literally hardly anyone else being in the whole park while I was there but it did seem safe enough. The pups and I will be back for sure. read more

There is a lot to really like about this park. It has your typical ball fields, basketball court, pavilions, kids playground, etc.. What elevates this park is Salem creek, natural areas, dog park, and the paved greenway that runs through it. The greenway is really cool and goes along another 4 - 5 miles through part of the city all the way to Salem Lake. Lots of people walking, jogging and riding bikes on the greenway. Now you are asking, what's up with the 3 stars? Well, there is no missing the fact that this park is right in the middle of an urban setting. It has a power station to one side of it, with power lines running parallel to a portion of the greenway. The neighborhood on one end is not the greatest. Lots of visible trash. I even saw a Big Lots shopping cart in the creek. There was a camping tent at the edge of the park. My assumption is a homeless person is staying there, but I guess it is possible some neighborhood kids were just camping (I doubt it though). Despite the issues noted, it is a decent park to visit, especially if you want to take advantage of the dog park and greenway. read more

Great! in some ways...we had a 20 month old who wanted to keep up with her 5 year old cousin....it was tough on Grama keeping everyone safe. Thankfully my son and daughter in law are much faster than myself. I wasn't expecting a climbing wall to go down the funnest sliding board! New to the area. Entered the park from Broad St to the large parking area near basketball courts. There is no map or signs indicating where anything is located in the park. I went to take my 3yr old to the Dinosaur Playground but did not end up finding it. I asked several people who were out walking and none of them knew what I was talking about. I've only been a couple times and although I love that there are plenty of trees, I've felt uncomfortable going alone. The dog parks are not right next to the parking lot. You have to cross a small walking bridge to get to the secluded park. Perhaps if I had big dogs I would feel less nervous, but my toy dogs aren't going to protect me if I'm confronted. PS. Please fix the fence on the small dog side by the gate entrance. A dog can go under the fence to the left. There is a nice path from the parking lot of Hamrick's that will bring you into the park by foot or bike. Again, just not my thing. If I was with a group I wouldn't feel like a sitting duck. read more

My dog loves the fenced area here. I wish the actual dog run had street lights like the rest of the park. There's a creek a little way down the paved road that she enjoys swimming in. A great place to excersize the poochie :) In response to the heinous murder comment- that is obviously not characteristic to to the park, bad things happen in good places all the time. It is not in a rough neighborhood and as a young female walking alone here at any given time I have never felt threatened. There are always families with young children at the ball park in the afternoon. I doubt they'd hang out there if it were dangerous. read more

DECENT DOG PARK. First and foremost--I never go to the dog park on the weekends because it gets WAY too crowded but if you are able to bring your dog during the week, its a great little park with several tables and its about half shaded which is nice. There is a water station inside (for thirsty dogs) and outside (for paw washing). - there is a kiddie pool that is fun to play in - there are lots of poop bags available and trash cans all over - there is not a separate area for big dogs vs. small dogs but I've never seen this be a problem - there are some muddy spots so don't go if its raining or freshly rained on A couple of other reviewers commented on the safety of the neighborhood...its not a great neighborhood but during the day I (SF) feel totally safe and the park has plenty of people in it. read more

This is for the dog park. Only a 3 star dog park because of the giant sand pit/mud pit in the middle, terrible idea. Loses another star for the kind of owners that visit this park. see below. I've heard some negative things about the kind of people that go to this park (people bringing sick contagious dogs to the park, etc.) and went here a few times when there were only 1 or 2 other dogs there. Really nothing bad to say about the other visitors other than the expected occasional misbehaved dog, child, or even annoying owner who doesn't clean up after their pet.....which is pretty par for any dog park. This time though, there were multiple dogs that were not neutered or spayed there. Who brings a dog that is not fixed to a dog park?? To make it worse, 2 men were arranging to have their pit bulls mate. Only 1 in 600 pit bulls that enters a shelter gets out alive, so many pit bulls enter shelters and very few are adopted, breeding these dogs is so irresponsible. After hearing that conversation, I really began to question how responsible these owners were and if these dogs were up to date on their shots and flea protection. read more

The large area of SAND in this dog park is a REALLY BAD IDEA! What was the Park Department thinking? The SAND PIT is a magnet to the dogs. The dogs relieve themselves in the SAND, and then they wrestle with other dogs in SAND that's soaked with urine. Children also are attracted to the SAND, and they play in it. They shouldn't. It's gross! My dog has long hair. After a visit to this dog park his coat is loaded with SAND! Even brushing him after our visit does not remove the SAND from my dog's coat and paws. The SAND gets deposited in my home. YUK! And after it has rained, the SAND stays wet for days. It sticks even worse! What's your car like after you have been to the beach? IT'S A MESS! Imagine your dog leaving the beach, and then riding home in your car? What would you expect? A dog park should be a grassy field where dogs can run wide open, chase other dogs and fetch balls..... but not SAND-COATED balls! YUK! The SAND also gets in their eyes and their ears! Too many mosquitoes! Our dog gets filthy at the dog park so the dog watching station is very nice but I just get devoured by mosquitoes every single time I'm here, I don't go here anymore, Park also needs emergency call boxes since parts are really isolated with the trees. read more

We went here for a change of pace from our normal dog park. I think this park is too crowded and you do not have a good sight line to properly keep an eye on your pet. I also didn't like the sand in the middle of the park and the water was not working. There was a huge mud puddle. There also seems to be a high dog to person ratio which was not so good. There have been some improvements with water fountain and separation for dog sizes. read more

I took my 5 month old coonhound mix for the first time to a dog park it was a beautiful day!! I really enjoyed this park and my fiancé and I had a blast and of course Marley!! People with other animals very respectful truly a wonderful place to take your fur baby, you can rinse your dog off or cool them off with a outside hose area. read more

My kids call this the dinosaur park. Nice play area with swings, slide, climbing structure, and of course dinosaurs. There is not a lot of seating right at the play area, but there is a covered picnic area just behind it up a small hill. There are a lot of walking trails and there is a dog park on the other side of the park. There is also a baseball diamond. I would have given it five stars but it has some negatives. It's easy to miss. The entrance is right next to the power plant. The park is practically on the power plant. It's a small hike to the playground from the parking lot and the bathrooms were locked. There was an out house in the parking area though. Overall, nice clean park and a huge score for the dinosaurs! read more

I really like this park. The kids love it because the dinosaurs are "tearing" up the playground. Perfect shady areas and bbq. Lots of trails to walk around, the main parking area seems a little odd because it looks like you're pulling up to some electrical transformers but all in all, the kids get excited to go to the "dinosaur" park! read more

This is a great park! There are wooded trails, a playground, picnic shelters, softball fields, a basketball court, workout area, dog park, and it's connected to a greenway! Generally feels safe during the day, and there are almost always a dozen cute dogs to watch in their fenced-in area. Go on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and you can even take the greenway to the $2 theater! Of course, I'm a bit biased... I live in the adjacent neighborhood that shares the same name. read more

For walking, running dog mingling, great. If you want to take your toddlers to the playground, poor. The slides are steel. It's 10am and the slides are so hot, my sons balls would stick to the slide and tear free if I were to put him on one. The playground architect was a sadist. read more

In general the park is decent, I like walking the greenway and visiting "dog beach" (a sandy part of the stream) with my dog in the summer, but I have not had good experiences with the dog park. I'm not sure if it's because of the location, but lots of the dogs that come here have little to no training and their owners use this as their only exercise. So the dogs come in totally wild, humping and harassing other dogs and the owners sit on the benches and do nothing. Obviously not everyone that comes to this park is like this, but in comparison to Tanglewood's dog park, there is a huge difference in the types of dogs and owners. read more

I came here with my kids on spring break and loved the dinosaurs built into the playground! My sons were having a ball the whole time playing and using their imagination to create their own world. I saw what seemed to be a neat dog park too, but I don't have a dog so I stayed on the playground. The park was a little hard to find. The grounds were well kept and clean which was great and I can't wait to return another day. This was the first time I'd seen a playground with the animals built into it. read more

Hit or miss with this park. I love the the dog park, but it seems like a lot of people bring their dogs who are not spayed or nurtured. This is kind of a turn-off as you have to be on guard with your own dog. Big area for the larger dogs to run around in and play fetch, get dirty and have a fun time. Smaller dogs even have a little separate area too. Watch your step as a lot of people leave their dog poop, even though there are bags available to throw it out. Again hit or miss depending on the crowd, but a great place to socialize your dog either way. read more

The fence is high from the ground in the small dog area that my pom could almost shimmy through the bottom of the gate. The dog park is nice, but needs better lighting. The softball fields there are decent for an inner-city park. The arrangement of the park and the parking takes a little getting used to, since the park is seperated by a creek and you have to know which area to park in or hoof it to the other side of the park. ***The park is okay during the day usually, but one side of the park backs up to a high crime area. If you are there at night, stay in a group--not alone.*** There is a small playground area on one side of the park (near the lone softball field on the back side) and there is a walking trail. There are not alot of ammenities and I have never seen the concession area open, even during busy ballpark days. Bring snacks and drinks with you as there are limited water fountains. One of the fields is farther back in the woods and has VERY limited bleacher seating (team supports are sitting in the same bleachers and there is even limited space in the dugouts). read more

My dog Sophie and I are at this park almost daily. We've been going since Feb 2012. We've been there before the change and after. I have complained to the city and submitted a petition to remove the sand surface due to the sand being flea infested. They gave me a stupid excuse, which once you read it will befuddle you, "flea larvae only mature in wet sand". Now read that again and think about that a minute.... Last year my dog was infested with fleas to the point that topical no longer worked! There is an amazing group of people that come to this park and the shaded area makes the park usable in the summer... Both Tanglewood and Horizon parks are too hot in the summer months, unless of course you enjoy a good baking! Additionally the water is only at one point in the front corner of the parks and that is not convenient. Washington Park, the water is centrally located! The city attempted to destroy this park with the sand, but Tanglewood gets a sprinkler system and seeded every year! WTH is up with that? This is the best park, by far, in spite of the sand... the people make it great.. there are a few that should go away..there are idiots that don't pick up poop... there has been those that drop dogs off... there are those that bring dogs in heat... But those things happen at Tanglewood and Horizons as well, I know, I've been there! read more

During the day not a bad place for dogs and such, water is available for both them and you. However I don't know what Cindi W. is talking about the park is near a high crime neighbourhood she lives in Raleigh what would she know about W-S neighbourhoods anyway? lol That being said I don't see that being a problem during the day, who hangs out in these parks at night anyway? I wouldn't hang out in any park after dark regardless of area it's in. It's worth taking the dogs too and family. read more

I like the park and had been there many times with my two dogs without any incident. Today my dogs were greeted by several dogs and a young lady running behind them telling her dog to get away from myne as if her dog had been in conflict before. While the dogs were greeting a mid sized pitbull began trying to dominate my weimaraner. My dog didn't become aggressive and actually laid down at which time the pitbull bit his ear causing several wounds and then tried to latch onto his neck. The owner began striking the dog but never offered apology. I had to removed my two dogs, she only removed her aggressive dog afterwards. Not sure if I want to put either of my dogs through that again. read more
