This is truly a full service park! That said, my review will focus mainly on the golf portions, with the park overall being a solid 5, and a must use for anyone in the Greensboro area. The driving range is just what you want and nothing more. A big open field to hit balls into, no frills, and also at a cheaper price than average. This is all I need, and all just about anyone would need at an amateur level. Distances are marked, and since it is pretty flat, you'll get a good idea for how far and straight you are hitting what. It's a popular place to practice, especially after typical work hours. The par 3 course... wellllll... it is less of a golf course, more of a hilly open area with some cutouts that would indicate a "green." There are 9 holes, the longest of which is about 130 yards, so no need to bring many clubs with you. The greens are about as rough as they get. There really isn't much of a putting surface. Too many weeds, and it's cut too long to get a realistic roll, I actually don't bother putting, because it isn't going to be good practice. There is also usually goose poop landmined around the course, the greens are no exception. The greens are also very small, none of which would be more than 25 feet in diameter, if that. The way I usually play, sticking the green from the tee is a birdie. Chipping up within about 5-8 feet is par. Anything outside of that, bogey. All this critique given, it was less than 10 bucks to play, really as much as you'd like. It does help you work on your short irons and wedges, and for that, I enjoy it and will return. Also, cheap beers in the clubhouse are just 2 bucks!

Even though you're right off of Hawthorne, which is a major road, it feels like you're more rural…read morethan that. They did a good job of creating that feel with the stone walls and large fields. I wish the tennis courts allowed for pickleball, especially because they have lights and we don't really have any lighted options in Winston (except out in Old Town). That said, there is a bit of a homeless problem in the area that seems more manifest at night. Just a heads-up.

There's a track as well but I'm not sure if this is part of the park or the school. You can walk on the trails that go parallel to Peters Creek. They have several bridges you can use to cross back and forth. The trails do go under the Glade Street bridge on the south side (park boundary ends here). The bridge is a little sketchy with all the liter and graffiti. Never had any issues though. Overall, Hanes Park is a nice park to enjoy the day. Dog friendly too.

There is a bathroom that is close and very clean along with shelters around the park as well. There is a basketball court a bit down and I believe a dog park. There are trails along the park as well. We had a blast. We pack our lunch and make it a fun day at the dinosaur park. If you're thinking to go..go! It's great for families and people just wanting to walk trails.

It's so nice to have such clean facilities with locks on the door that work properly. Unfortunately so many of the bathrooms at public playgrounds are a disaster but that's not the case here. The picnic benches are close by so if you want to sit and watch your children play you are still within reach. The walking trails go on for miles and are all paved. Great for walking, running, riding bikes or scooters. On the other side of the park there are basketball courts, workout stations, a dog park and a baseball field. This is a great part to consider if you want to reserve a shelter for a party. Everything about this park is beautiful and historic.

It offers a ton of parking, a pool, gazebos and kayaks for rent, and activities for kids. City Lake hosts community events from time to time, and it can get quite crowded on those days, but go during an off-hour and its fairly serene. For walkers, there's a view of the lake and some interesting wildlife (Muscovy ducks, anyone?). The trails also connect to the Piedmont Environmental Center, which is worth remembering should PEC parking ever fill up. Whether you want to swim, fish, paddle, or stroll, City Lake Park has what you need to be able to enjoy the outdoors.

Not very crowded the times I went, so it was nice to not have to share the lanes. Lots of kids and families around overall though. I personally would not come for leisure/relaxation. $3 pool fee - hard to beat!
