Be the Boss Dog Training

Be the Boss Dog Training

They have given us back our life. At the end of March,…read morewe adopted a rescue Pitt mix. The shelter let us know that he was a one-animal home, but we left feeling confident that training could help that. Three months later and $400 spent on PetCo training, we found that DS/CC dog training was not cutting it. Our dog sent my hunny and the cat to the hospital. They said the cat was lucky to be alive. After that, I saw an ad on Facebook for Be the Boss Dog training. We were looking for something less treats based and their philosophy seemed to line up with ours, so we reached out and scheduled a time to meet. Sidney Faden, the co-founder, invited us into his home, answered all of our questions, then handled our dog for a quick temperament assessment. He considered our personalities and the needs of our dog and used that to choose our trainers. We had to wait 2-3 weeks for the first appointment, but we didn't leave empty handed! He gave us the option to purchase an e-collar, showed us how to use it, and invited us to feel what our dog would feel. We left with a slip lead leash and a lot of hope. The collar came in the mail a week later. Part of our conversation was goal setting and setting expectations. We were charged for the services we needed. The payment was expected upfront, which was a lot, but they partner with Affirm, so we were able to pick a payment plan that worked for us. Included for everyone is a lifetime membership to the app and twice monthly group training sessions (Pack walks). Once a month, we have the opportunity to hop on a Zoom training call and participate in the group session that is too far for us to travel. We are able to text our trainers whenever and they answer within a few hours. They take photos and videos for us so we can see how far our dog has come, and so that we can analyze the play-by-play like football coaches do. Our dog has so far finished 3 training sessions and maybe 4 pack walks. We had to take a break in between because the pup needed a tooth pulled. The trainers are so well educated in their field! They were able to identify and explain how the dental pain was affecting our dog, reflecting back on even when we didn't know he was in pain! They remember us and greet our dog by name. They are patient and firm. They have the better interest of our dog front and center, which included telling us he wasn't ready for the next step because we did not hold up our end of the bargain! (We did not do enough of the preparatory training to be ready for the planned lesson.) Today our dog was able to lay on the ground surrounded by other dogs at the pack walk. There were maybe 10 dogs within lunging distance, but he stayed calm. That wasn't possible even a month ago. The cat can enter the same room as the dog now. We have the flow of traffic back in our small home. There is hope that we don't have to send the dog back to the shelter. Bethany, the founder, believes in a "train the trainer, trust the dog" approach. We see her at almost every pack walk. The only one she missed was the one where is rained and almost no one came! Anyway, her philosophy on the outside looks like a bubbly person. On the inside, she has a mental health-centered mindset. She uses therapy language and recognizes that a lot of dog problems are actually people problems being blamed on (or manifesting in) the dog. I love her approach. Anyone who has seen a "where are they now" with past clients of Cesar Milan knows that if the person doesn't change, the training is wasted and the dog reverts back to old behaviors. Later this week we have our next session where the dog works on his public access skills. This is towards his Advanced Obedience Training Certificate. I look forward to my continued participation and getting to see the personality of who my pup can be when he isn't controlled by fear and instinct.

This program was a complete waste of time and money. I truly regret signing up. If you're…read moreconsidering it, save yourself the trouble--it's not worth it. The communication was poor; they only seemed interested in reaching out when payment was due. The owner came across as overly cheerful and unprofessional rather than acting like a serious dog trainer. There was one trainer who seemed experienced and disciplined, but you don't get to choose who you work with. Instead, we were assigned someone who had to drive two hours to reach us, even though we were told there were trainers nearby. None of this was explained beforehand. The sessions were all more than an hour away, and we were never informed about that either. The company should have been upfront about their limited resources and suggested finding a trainer closer to home. It felt dishonest and disorganized. After spending nearly $3,000, my dog still struggles with basic potty training and only listens when wearing the e-collar. Everything they taught could have been learned for free on YouTube. I would like at least half my money back because this experience was truly disappointing.

We worked with Ryan for our in home sessions with our two Malamutes! One malamute is 4 years old…read moreand the other is 10 months old. Ryan was awesome to work with! We've had a great experience and seen major changes in the behavior of both our dogs. We highly recommend Dog Training Elite. They were always on time, professional, and eager to answer any questions! We work at least 15 minutes a day with our dogs on their training. Some weeks are better than others, but it's surprising how fast they picked everything up! The only issue that we've run into is that the dog collars are very inconsistent when it comes to having a thick coat like our malamutes have. We switched to longer prongs and have ordered some winged tipped prongs to see if it can make better contact with their skin. A lot of the frustration we had with our dogs behavior has completely disappeared. We can't wait to continue working with them at group classes.

He pulled so hard that one time he pulled me down, and I broke my elbow. Not good! Other than those issues, he's a great dog! Just needed some behavioral help. Champie had 2 prior trainers before Evan came into our home and our lives. Evan worked magic with Champie and with me! He was firm, yet friendly. Champie is no longer the alpha in the house and quickly learned he was no longer in charge! Champie is now tolerant of new people coming to our house, and almost friendly. He is no longer aggressive when another dog walks by, and taking him for a walk is actually fun -- no more pulling. I never imagined he'd be able to accomplish not pulling on a leash, but Evan was very patient with him and me! I would highly recommend Evan for all your dog training needs -- He's the BEST!

As a Draper resident, I can't say enough great things about Wendi Okabayashi and "A Heart 4 Paws."…read more Our rescued Black Lab/Great Dane mix had already been surrendered twice. He was jumpy, mouthy, pulled constantly on walks, and was honestly a handful. When we reached out, Wendi responded immediately and suggested meeting in a public place so she could observe him in a real-world environment. Within minutes, she had him figured out. She wasn't just reading the dog, she was reading us and showing how our communication was affecting his behavior. The transformation has been remarkable. He's now obedient, well-mannered, walks politely on a leash, and has become a cherished member of our family. What also sets Wendi apart is her kindness and thoughtfulness. When you work with her, you're not just hiring a trainer. You're building a lasting relationship. She truly cares about every dog she works with and has become an extension of our family. Even after completing her Board and Train program, she's always available to answer questions, offer guidance, and celebrate our progress. If you're looking for a knowledgeable, responsive, and professional dog trainer in Draper or anywhere in the Salt Lake Valley, Wendi is the person to call!

Wendi came highly recommended by a friend and so I did a group class with Wendi! I almost left right after arriving to the first group class as my dog, River, was letting out a super high pitched bark called a Shiba scream. I was so embarrassed by his bark I never even heard before that moment but Wendi was so kind to not let me leave and reassured me it would be okay and taught me what to do so that he stopped screaming and we could be successful during the group training class. That group class changed my relationship with my dog as I learned how to communicate and bond with my dog. I also did a few private lessons with Wendi to really learn how best train and lead my tough, independent, and stubborn Shiba. She truly changed my life and his as I could never imagine that I could walk him on a leash without pulling, let alone have him be calm enough to be able to take him kayaking with me!
