Jan is the best dog trainer that I've ever known! While in one of her puppy classes I had to take my pup outside to pee & when I was walking around the various gym equipment I almost tripped over one of her German Shepherds, because it was so well trained & obedient that I didn't even see him! Come to find out she only had, had him for less than 6 months & prior to being with her, he came from a bad home with absolutely no training or obedience! In her classes, you'll learn so much about your dog & how your dog is actually trying to train YOU!! ANY Dog @ ANY training level, Jan Perkins has a solution!!! read more

5 out of 5 stars! I highly recommend Jan at Live Oak Obedience! Having my dog Molly progress through Puppy Obedience to Advanced Off Leash Training has been a truly transformative experience for both of us. Jan is incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and genuinely cares about your dog's success. She takes the time to explain the underlying reasons behind dog behaviors. She gives individual instruction and advice to each client and furry friend to help them with specific behaviors. Jan has taught me how to communicate effectively to Molly. Group lessons are fun, we all learn together! There is always something new and stimulating to learn at each class. Thank you Jan for helping me learn how to train and teach Molly, because of you, we have a positive, happy relationship. Live Oak Obedience is the best! read more

Milli (my modern mini aussie) and I have been attending Live Oak for a couple of years and have enjoyed the relationships we've made. We've taken classes in Obedience, Rally, Agility, and Scent work. Both Jan and Kelsie are very knowledgeable and talented trainers who teach practical skills in how to be great leaders for our dogs in a fun environment. They are extremely patient not only with the dogs but also with owners like myself who lack the confidence to lead their pets. Milli and I have created a wonderful relationship and are confident and well-mannered in so many situations.Thank you, Live Oak, for a fun year, and we look forward to many more! read more

4 classes in and my corgi pup is way different then when we brought him in the first time. The team they got there is very information and very friendly! Felt welcomed from the first step I took in. I highly recommend them ! I will continue to go to them for training and any future dogs I may get. read more

We've signed up for the 8 classes option that Jan offers and have attended 2 in person puppy obedience classes and 1 zoom behavior modification class so far. The difference in our 3 month old pomsky is night and day! We were getting very frustrated with him (and him with us) and after 1 puppy class with Jan we felt equipped to better understand and help him be successful and obedient. She helps you understand dog language and behavior in a way that really sticks with you. Now he is already sitting, staying, leaving it and leash walking with manners and is quickly picking up new things. Jan is so helpful and takes time to customize her sessions depending on the needs of everyone and gives focused attention to each puppy. We are so happy we found her and her pricing is an absolute steal for the quality and results. Highly recommend her! read more

If you are looking for an Amazing trainer look no further! We researched and interviewed a lot of trainers. Jan is seriously the best! She trains You how to train your puppy/dog. Her book Training with a dog's brain I highly recommend reading before your first session. read more

I have two 11 mo French bulldogs as my first ever canine pets. As a first time mom, we survived until now with no "obedience " at all. I had no idea what obedience was. Jan let me take as much classes as possible in short 3 weeks, that changed my relationship with my pups. Small talks before and after the classes were also eye opening to learn how dog perceived human's action. I wish I could stay in Utah longer. read more

Best trainer ever. She has been doing it forever and has developed a non treat based training system. The difference you will see after just one class will amaze you. Her training is based on love. Making sure your dog listens to you and makes good decisions. Her facility is too notch being cool in the summer and warm in the winter. read more

I have referred Jan many times for anyone who asks how my dog behaves so beautifully. My neighbor was proudly walking her 2 young poodle doodles (big ones) around the neighborhood and stopped to tell me how grateful she was to started classes with Jan. Those dogs were difficult to walk one at a time, but after 1 class with Jan she was able to have both walk beside her and in control. They both sat even when my dog approached them, and this was after only 1 class. Another friend took classes, at my suggestion, and learned she is the alpha dog. She was so pleased to learn so much about dog behavior from the class, and her relationship with her best friend has totally evolved into trust and security, instead of act and react. It is amazing to see owners learn so much from their dog training classes! read more

Jan is an excellent trainer with years of experience and it show. She has taught me how to train my poodle to be obedient, go on walks properly, sit when told, barking issues, and much more. I highly recommend her! read more

Live Oak Dog Obedience - When I call my dog in an off leash area, he comes running right to me, thanks to Jan. - Pet Training Near Me - Bluffdale, Utah

We brought our year old doodle for beginning novice training. Jan is amazing, caring, and focused in her training g. It is well organized and you'll see differences in you pooch after just one session. Our doodle pulled and pulled when walking and especially when he'd see another dog walker. He had a regular collar on- we had also tried a harness and he pulled more. One session and using a pinch collar he baca me a well mannered guy! It isn't used to 'choke or hurt' the dog, but a gentle tug and brain reset. He's been walking nicely ever since. We'll be going back for more opportunities to help our furry family member to become all he can be. We're hoping he could eventually become a therapy dog to visit hospitals and care homes. Jan is amazing and we'd highly recommend. read more

I have been training with Jan and Live Oak Dog Obedience since I moved to SLC in July and would highly recommend to anyone. Some background: My dog Maggie is a 85-90 lb german shepherd/great dane/mastiff mix. She had already finished all 3 levels of classes at Petsmart which teaches only positive reinforcement, but she was developing very strong protection instincts and leash aggression. It was especially bad when encountering men, she would pull, bark, lunge, and growl. The solution from the Petsmart trainers was she shouldn't be allowed to bark at people, so to remove her from the situation. So I would avoid if possible, but pull her away if starts barking, but I think pulling her away when she was reacting may have contributed to making the reaction worse. I walk Maggie everyday (otherwise my house would suffer) and her reactivity was making me scared to bring her out. I emailed Jan about starting training and she had me call her and she immediately gave me some tips for handling Maggie at home even before the first class. She also recommended my husband bring Maggie for the first class since I was getting nervous/scared going to new places with her. The first thing that happened was changing her head collar to a prong. Wow, it was night and day - immediate change in behavior correction in just the first class. I haven't had a dog since I was a kid and now the recent dog training trend is positive training only and that the prong is evil, but honestly, Maggie's aggressive behavior was never corrected while on the head collar and she wouldn't even know treats were around, even using the highest value treat and shoving them into her mouth. And having to drag her away using the head collar could be done but was super physically and emotionally exhausting for me. Jan teaches you how to properly use the prong collar and will answer any questions you have about using it. She emphasizes it should be loose at all times unless you are correcting. (I had worked with another trainer before that also said the head collar contributes to more aggression because dogs are irritated with it on their nose. It provided better control though than the alternative that they suggested so we kept using it. After starting to use the prong, we haven't gone back to the head collar.) We also started the e-collar with Jan which is critical for off-leash work. She has a class just for going over basics and how to use it properly. We did a private with Jan when my parents were visiting. I had brought Maggie to my parents house and she really reacted to my father and he was scared of her which didn't help the situation. I had to keep Maggie separated to make sure nothing happened. So when my parents came to visit, I had Jan over on the first day of the visit. Jan worked with us for an hour or so and gave us some really great solutions to help us. She had suggested keeping Maggie on leash the whole time they were visiting, but she was doing so well without any incident, we let her off leash by the second day of their visit and Maggie and my father became friends before he left. She also worked with us on getting Maggie to stop attacking the moving trashcans. It has been months now and Maggie has graduated from the Beginner Novice and Intermediate levels and will now start Advance classes. I love the class format. Jan holds the classes at different locations and the class rosters are not set, so you dog gets exposure going to different locations (usually busy with lots of people and kids) and exposure to different dogs. Jan also has walk and train classes which takes your pup out into the real work to practice what you learn in class. Some of the places I would never imagine for me to take by dog but because Jan is holding the class, I have so much confidence and Maggie always does great. And if she reacts, I know how to correct her or Jan will be there to help. She also watches and tells you when to correct before anything escalates. We have also done a couple of agility classes with Kelsey. Those classes are located in the barn behind Jan's house. Those are fun and is a good working activity. read more

Jan at Live Oak is fabulous. She understands dogs and their owners. Spend time in the beginning class and practice so you and dog feel confident before jumping to intermediate. Classes aren't too hard to get into and they aren't overcrowded. I really like the classes when we go to a park or such but they're not as often so more difficult to get into. She is no treats which is a good thing since we don't always have a treat to bribe a dog read more

You can tell how much Jan cares about dogs and that they are trained correctly. Jan is amazing. Her skills to help me personalize how I chose to accept my dog to behave are indescribable(on/off furniture dogs, in bed dogs, and MANNERS). My almost one year old giant Schnauzer is learning to help me and companion me. I have a brain tumor, I'm unstable, I'm scared, my dog is my companion to keep my cool in public places as well as a support if needed. She learned so quickly to attend me up stairs, she hears emotion in my voice and barks to let me know I need to change my environment, we are working on a better signal. I love the group outings and wish for more! She trains using the pull collars, I don't know the correct name, and the correct way to use them. You can keep using that or she also offers e-collar classes. Great for me as jerking a collar can cause anxiety. I've done private classes with Jan, highly recommended for specific things. She does hike training. Off leash training (once your pup is ready). I've attached photos of an outing at the Deer Valley Luncheon. Do more events like this!! We also have done the rattlesnake avoidance class, we hike a lot, Utah has a higher and higher growing population on basically ALL dog friendly hikes. Totally worth it & only needs to be done once in a dogs life. They never forget! read more

I got my full size golden doodle as a puppy. I had never trained a dog on my own. We have 4 kids and with such a big dog I wanted to make sure she is well trained and good with the kids. Jan helped us immensely. She quickly caught bad habits the dog was developing and taught me how to fix them. She does a question and answer session EVERY class. It was helpful to listen to other people's questions as well as be able to ask my own. I worried our dog was hyper and crazy at the beginning but by following the instructions Jan gave us we taught the dog to follow and obey rules. She is a perfect dog now, she is calm, great with all kids, follows commands etc. read more

Jan is great! She really teaches you how to communicate with your dog in a way that will make them be obedient to you because they respect and love you. She does not train with fear or treats. Jan is great. I searched for a good dog trainer for my new puppy for quite some time, and decided to go to her. BEST DECISION EVER! My pup is now 4 months old, and has been training for a month. He is doing amazing! Jan knows exactly what she is doing and can teach YOU to train your own dog. She just shows you how to do it and gives you pointers and advice to improve. This is way better than having a stranger train your dog so your dog listens to them but not you. My dog is going to grow up in this training program and he will go through every class available. I love it! read more

Such a positive experience in every way! I signed up for the 8 class package and am thankful I did. Jan and Kelsey are amazing. My very first class was tiring for both me and my dog, but so very worth it. We learned so much and I feel like I understand how to better communicate with my dog as training goes both ways. The commands he has learned are not "tricks" instead it is manners and behavior that makes me proud to take my dog in public. I researched multiple obedience companies and Jan is by far the best. She emphasizes the importance of owner training just as much as dog training. 10/10!! I look forward to continuing the training. read more

I had 3 friends who all separately recommended Jan for dog training. Jan was the 4th dog trainer I had talked with over the phone and I could tell instantly she was going to be amazing. I have a border collie/Australian Shepard who would bark and lunge at everyone he didn't know. We struggled having visitors because he would try and bite everyone. Jan changed our lives! Not only can we safely and pleasantly have guests over, we also just returned home from a vacation where we were able to take him in and out of the hotel with zero negative behaviors. Jan is the best!!!! read more

I have a 1 year old labradoodle who would throw tantrums on walks every time we went on one. After 1 class with Live Oak Dog Obedience that all changed. Bulleit is so good on walks that we go more often. I spent money on another training class (with another business) before this and was a complete waste of money. I would highly recommended training with Jan. Looking forward to another class! read more

Hey, I am looking to sell the six remaining classes I signed up for at a reduced price. I signed up earlier this year and got a lung infection that turned into pneumonia and my mom who was coming with me to take our puppy had to get throat surgery. So we just haven't had time or the energy to take her to the rest of the classes. I'm starting grad school in the fall amd just don't think I will have the time to make it to the lessons. When my pup and I first started Live Dog Obedience we were not sure what to expect but we hoped for the best. My 5, as the time, 5 months old GSD would bark st any dog she saw... Until Jan! She did a magic trick and has made my pup settle down. Within 5 minutes of the class she went from barking at any dog she saw to sitting at my side peacefully. It was amazing! So if you took have an unsocialized puppy that barks at any other puppy that gets in their path, try Jan Perkins and Live Oak Dog Obedience, you won't regret it.. Oh and the prices are decent. read more

If you need some help with training your dog I would highly suggest Live Oak Dog Obedience. We started attending group classes with our German Shepherd puppy when he was about 5 months old. We had used a different trainer previously and he wasn't responding well to the training techniques. So we switched over to Jan at Live Oaks Dog Obedience and our puppy loves it. I see an immediate improvement to how he is responding to our commands. And we have been getting along so much better now that we know how to communicate with each other! read more

Jan is excellent. We have taken two pitbulls to her and they are both so well behaved. We often take them out with us during the warm weather when we eat at outside restaurants and we always get complimented on how well behaved and friendly they are. There are also different options that Jan will work with. One of our dogs prefers the halty as a training device, while the other one prefers the prong collar and Jan is willing to work with whatever works best for the dog and owner. read more

Jan is an experienced & talented trainer! She is friendly, much of her training is intuitive & just makes sense. She can help if you're training for competition or simply want a K9 companion that's a good citizen. Aside from obedience, she can also help with agility & scent work! She's the only trainer that I've heard of that sponsors a class to help keep your dog safe from rattlesnakes, which is huge if you enjoy hiking in the foothills with your dog. Yes, the classes utilizes live rattlesnakes! read more

I have only been to 2 classes and what I have learned In that short period is eye opening. Jan is not training my dog. She is training me on how to train my dog and my dog gets it! Jan has helped me with obedience and other speciality training (scent and rattle snake avoidance) with my German Shepherds. She offers simple straight forward advice. She loves and respects my dogs. I like her approach to dog training, she uses the wolf pack mentality. I have experienced Jan in private 1:1 lessons and in a group setting, she provides fantastic guidance in either format. She is a highly skilled trainer with a wealth of knowledge which has helped me raise great well behaved dogs. read more

It's funny, but when Jan explains something you feel like it's so obvious you should have known that. Her training is well thought out and very straightforward. So far one of our dogs is doing very well, the younger one is still catching on, but both are developing much better manners. We're not looking to create "work dogs", just to socialize our dogs so that they can go out in public and not be annoying to everyone around us. I have no doubt that with Jan's help and some time we will achieve that. As a bonus, they both seem better adjusted at home! read more

I'm SO glad we found Jan at Live Oak! We have put our GSD through another training program and he didn't seem to really listen to us. After attending the first class with Live Oak, he is so much more behaved and happy. I HIGHLY recommend Live Oak! read more

We had a great experience with Jan at Live Oak! Her asses are so affordable (I believe 8 lessons for $130?) and extremely helpful. It's possible to graduate from classes and move up quickly (our dog didn't have that experience as he's very stubborn , but I saw many other where that happened) because what she teaches is so easy to adapt into your home life and practice between classes. I would recommend Live Oak to anyone looking for something anywhere from beginners obedience to really advanced. She can do it all! read more

We "inherited" my son's dog, given to him as a birthday present by a former high school girlfriend. (I know, a shirt would've been a better gift!) She found the pup on KSL, last of the litter and an emotional adoption. So, a few months later, off they go to their respective colleges and guess who gets to raise the dog? A mixed breed, Lab and Heeler which made him a retriever who herded by nipping legs, hands etc. He fought other dogs if food fell to the floor. I feared for my house guests safety so would lock him in a room. He was headed to the Animal Shelter. Then I saw the Live Oak Dog Obedience class being held at Dimple Dell Rec. At last resort I called Jan, who promptly returned my call. After the first class I knew I had to establish who was the boss. Jan showed me the "Alpha Roll" when he acted up in class and behavior issues began to change. He sits, stays, heels and responds to my commands. We've since taken other classes and he has advanced nicely. We're still guarded with our grand baby and use a mesh, breathable muzzle (on Jan's advice.) Again, she called me promptly with my concerns. Don't hesitate to enroll in her classes, it was a game changer for us! Jan trained us but taught our dog. read more
