You ever walk into a place and immediately think, "Yep... this is either going to be amazing or I'm…read moreabout to make a terrible decision"? Welcome to Judy's Place. Because this spot is not pretending to be anything. This is full-on, unapologetic dive. And I mean that in the best possible way. You walk in and it's like the '70s, '80s, and a little bit of someone's '90s basement bar all got together and said, "Let's not change a thing." Old banquet-style tables, a bar top that feels like it's hosted a thousand stories, and walls that have clearly seen some things. I loved it immediately. Now let's talk food. The folks next to me were deep into the chicken and dumplings and talking about it like it was a life event. You know that kind of table chatter where you start reconsidering your order mid-bite? Yeah, that. I went shrimp po' boy... and no regrets. Shrimp fried just right. Crispy, flavorful, doing exactly what it's supposed to do. Solid sandwich. The fries... eh, they showed up a little tired. Not terrible, just kind of there. A little cold, a little soggy, like they'd already had a long day. But here's the twist. You don't come to Judy's for perfection. You come for personality. For the feeling that you just discovered a place that doesn't care about trends, doesn't need a remodel, and definitely isn't chasing Instagram. It just is what it is... and somehow that works. Fold this into your expectations. If you need polished, keep driving. If you want real, pull up a chair. It's fun. It's different. It's got character for days. Four stars. And honestly, half the star is just for staying exactly the same all these years.

Needless to say It has changed ownership very recently and has gone downhill. Last night we sat on the patio to enjoy the sunset; the place was a mess with electrical cords, debris and trash all around the tables; one had to walk around or step over things. Not very welcoming or safe. Our server was pleasant but absent. Our meal was not right and some of it was cold. No one came to check on us for far too long to ask if we needed anything. The manager seemed disconnected and unprepared for a Wednesday night. The previous owner had many great employees and things ran smoothly, clean and we always enjoyed ourselves. My wife and I were very disappointed for our weekly date night.

Big Daddy's Grill is in a really cool location on the water at The Fish River with a great view…read more The food was a mixed bag for me as I found their gumbo to more akin to a shrimp creole as for some reason Alabama calls a LOT of things gumbo that we would NEVER call gumbo in Louisiana so typically I just call these concoctions Alabama soup. So far the only actual gumbo I've had in Alabama is at Tamara's Downtown in Fairhope, AL. I ordered the fried grouper finger and shrimp basket which was decent tasting but a smaller portion size. On another visit I sampled their cheeseburger and it had decent sized meat patty on it with some good flavors. I also had the key lime pie for dessert which was alright and pretty par for the course and very similar to most of the other key lime pies I've had in the area. The service was alright but they did a take a bit longer to refill my iced tea than I would have preferred. Overall this is a cool spot to visit and they have a nice variety of options although I can't recommend the "gumbo" Alabama soup.

Man I love diners and I am so easy to please. I don't complain about really anything in life (just…read moreask my family and friends) but sometimes I have to nitpick when I see something that could use some improvement. Came here Sunday May 3rd around 1pm. Was busy but not completely full where you had to wait for a table. We sat down and waited for our server to take our order. It took our server about 20 mins to come over and take our order. So we put in our food order when the server came by to take our drink order. Food took about 40 mins from when we ordered to when we got our food. I used to work in restaurants (the busiest of restaurants) and know that you should staff more, prep more, and place larger food orders in anticipation of being fully booked friday night till sunday night. I ordered gumbo. My niece got biscuits and gravy. The gumbo was pretty good except would have liked the roux a little thicker. The gravy on the biscuits was lacking in flavor. I love diners and love supporting locally owned businesses. Maybe some staff called off this particular day because the service was slow. But I wil be back.
