I've never been to your store before but pass it on my way home from work . For almost 20 yrs. I was a regular customer of Benjamin Bros /Value Hardware before they closed down . What kept me loyal to that store wasnt their prices . It was the friendliness and helpfulness which should be a standard work ethic for customer service people. As soon as a floor person saw you there they asked if they could be of help after they said Hi... I guess you know where I'm going with this .. A younger man was helping someone by the paints and he was friendly with the customer. I got the older man ringing me out . He didn't say hello or ask to help me find anything when I saw him earlier in the aisles wandering right next to him. He was just as stone faced at the register . Why would I want to go back there and become a loyal customer ?? I'm writing this because I think it's a shame when a small business is being hurt unnecessarily .

Oh sure, on the busiest day of the week (Sat.) when the place is flooded with people like me who need help and don't know what they're doing you might wait a while for help. But, when that person comes, he will spend as much time as it takes to get you what you need and to be sure you know how to use it. This is pure, solid, excellent customer service at its best and it's well worth the wait. There have been times when I've asked "Do I need this?" and been told "You don't have to spend so much let me show you a better idea." What they sell are quality items - not the junk you'll get elsewhere that won't last. If you're a lady as am I, no condescending attitudes ever which truly counts for a lot. And they were equally patient, kind and attentive with my unskilled husband. When I owned a home Benjamin Brothers taught me how to take care of it. As a real estate agent they've been invaluable in helping me to help my clients. Maybe this is a generation gap since I'm no longer young but I'd rather wait the 5 or 6 minutes on a busy day to have someone who's an expert make sure I've got the right item and then explain what to do with that thing.

Why exhaust yourself at those big box hardware stores when everything you need is at Readers?…read moreHere's why Readers is better: * Time is money. Accomplishing an errand at Readers takes 5 minutes -- literally. A trip to the big box store kills most of the morning. * Sales staff are knowledgeable and plentiful. No need to plead for someone to help you. If you live locally, you probably already know them. * Inventory is a known quantity, and the staffperson generally comes with you to look for what you want. * If something doesn't work, they take it back -- no questions asked. And no long wait at a backed-up customer service desk. * Small doesn't mean less inventory. Readers has most everything. * Fantastic location in the center of Dobbs Ferry's downtown near the post office, grocery store, shoe repair and other shops, so can tackle all your errands in one stop. Bee Line bus service to Readers especially on weekdays is frequent and the stop is down the block. He then got a pair of vice grips and was able to get the screws off for me, this wouldn't have happened at a Home Depot or Lowes. He then gave me advice on how to reinstall the new screws. Another important fact is that their prices are pretty much on par with box chain hardware stores. This is a great local business and I will be a customer for life.
