We stopped by Wapiti Outdoors on our way home after reading about their famous huckleberry ice cream and milkshakes. Most of the store is dedicated to selling gifts and other merchandise. The cafe, where all the ice cream and treats are found, is in the back of the store through a doorway on the right. Milkshake, Huckleberry, Large 24oz ($8.50*) - I'm not sure if they make their ice cream in house. Probably not**, but the milkshake is pretty tasty, studded with plenty of little flecks of blue/black colored berries. The consistency is perfectly drinkable and it's not too sweet. I saw them pouring in milk and scooping tons of ice cream into the blender - the milkshake probably has more ice cream included than even a double scoop cone. The milkshake is delightfully fruity flavored, kind of like blueberry, but also a little different. Just the day before drinking this milkshake, I foraged huckleberries near Mt. Rainier (red and several types of blue), and I can say that it also doesn't taste exactly like a fresh huckleberry, but the ice cream still tastes great in its own way. (4/5) *There is something funky going on with their accounting. A large milkshake (sans whipped cream) should be $8.50 according to the menu displayed at the counter. Their address indicates they are in Enumclaw, so adding a 8.9% Enumclaw sales tax should be $9.26. I was charged $9.49, plus an additional 33 cent service charge (they have a label at the front counter stating they charge a 3.5% service fee for credit cards so that's not an issue). I gave them a call after noticing this discrepancy and they told me that the large milkshake is actually $8.75 since they raised prices two months prior (and didn't update their menu...) and the extra $0.74 is tax. That's equivalent to a 8.5% sales tax, which no jurisdiction in either King County nor Pierce County charges. There's something strange going on and their explanation in the call makes no sense. **Based on my research, I believe the ice cream they use is from Cascade Glacier, which is a blueberry ice cream base with huckleberry flavoring. Any place with unethical or dishonest behavior automatically gets a 1 star review. For Wapiti Outdoors, in the best case scenario, they, for some inexplicable reason, decided not to update their electronic signboard to reflect their latest pricing AND they didn't set up their POS system to calculate sales tax correctly. Went up to green water for the morning and had to stop and use the restroom as well as get some huckleberry ice cream. We also got a coffee. I don't think I'd do that again. It was over priced and nothing to write home about but the ice cream was fabulous. They are quite generous with what they give you and the flavor was wonderful. read more

You have to make a pit stop here if you're visiting mount rainier!!! First of all, super cool store and I loved browsing. It's petite and quaint but a lot of cool curated stuff. But if you walk towards the back of the store, they have amazzzzzing huckleberry ice cream!!!!! Next time I'll bring a cooler so I can bring some back home! And price was totally reasonable. Cute little sportswear, cafe, and souvenir shop that's located on the way to Mount Rainier National Park. I stopped here on the way back from Mount Rainier to grab some souvenirs and snacks. This little shop is truly darling! There's plenty of namesake clothing and outdoor gear for sale. Lots of different souvenirs and namesake trinkets. I love to collect refrigerator magnets when I travel to new places and I was able to find a nice one here. If you're hungry, they have a limited menu of hot food items including pizza and premade breakfast burritos and sandwiches. They're also pretty popular for their ice cream which is perfect after being up in the mountains on a warm day. They have coffee and other espresso drinks as well. Their building looks like a cute old house that you'd see on a Christmas card. The staff is super warm and cheery here too. There aren't too many shops in this little town, but Wapiti is definitely worth a stop while driving to or from Mount Rainier National Park. read more

Would avoid coming here if you are a POC. Lady standing at the front of the store did not welcome me in and had an angry look on her face. I thought they were closed when we came in. I asked where the ice cream shop was. Her back was turned against us and didn't bother replying. A few moments later, a Caucasian male walks in with his child and he was greeted with the best, friendliest customer service. I made my way towards the back of the store where the ice cream was located, and the worker in the back also didn't seem happy to be there. Kind of asked us what we wanted so we can hurry up out of the store. When we left, the woman at the front provided zero customer service to us. We were ignored. A favorite place to stop after going to Chinook Pass, Crystal Mountain or Mount Rainier NP (White River [Sunrise] entrance or Stevens Canyon entrance). This is the place to grab an ice cream on the way home from a hike. They also have a gift shop and are famous for their woolens (though personally, I've not explored the gift shop part of their store). They have a variety of imaginative flavors like huckleberry ice cream and shakes, as well as a variety of smoothies and coffee drinks. They also have a limited selection of sandwiches, pizza, etc. The ice cream is always the draw coming off a hike, scramble or climb. The ice cream itself is pretty standard (nothing special in terms of quality), but the imaginative flavors, and the fact that they are the dominant shop in town (and on the exit road from Mt Rainier NP) means that this is the place to go. You won't rave about the ice cream, but chances are you'll enjoy it. And there's nothing wrong with huckleberry as a flavor - not something you see every day. read more

Huckleberry Milkshake!!! We stopped here on our way to Enumclaw since word on Crystal Mountain was that they were having an end-of-season sale AND also happen to make amazing huckleberry milkshakes. Both facts were true! We snagged some good gear at 40% off and also got a bunch of huckleberry items: syrup, gummies, licorice, and taffy. A huckleberry is kind of like a gamier blueberry, and all three of us love the flavor. The milkshake was phenomenal, nice and thick, with the fruit flavor shining through and a generous helping of whipped cream. Our only complaint is that we wish we had one of those bigger milkshake straws since the thinner one wasn't ideal for its consistency. Everyone working there was really friendly. I spend a lot a time in the area all year round for hikes, camping, hunting and fishing. I always stop here for my recreation passes, local clothing clean restrooms and the great service of the merchandising staff. The clothing and merchandise is separate than the coffee stand inside. The cashiers are extremely friendly and always share great tips and info on what's going on that week. I would need to give some constructive criticism on the coffee stand. There is a sign that tells customers to treat the baristas with kindness and they will treat you the same, But every time I go in to get a coffee the baristas are not so friendly and almost feels like an inconvenience to them. This is a great stop before heading into or leaving the park. A restroom is available for paying customers. There's a busy cafe in the back with some prepared sandwiches, soft drinks, ice cream, smoothies, milkshakes, coffee, baked goods, etc. I had their ice cream TWICE and it was super creamy and flavorful. This is my long-time favorite secret spot for huckleberry ice cream. The ice cream is chockful of huckleberry fruits and flavor. Now there's even a huckleberry-flavored whip to go with your dessert, latte, or Italian soda. I don't recommend the huckleberry shake. We drove pass the Greenwater area on the way and back from Mount Rainer, and we wanted to get some ice cream on the way back. Inside there is a gift shop w/ Mount Rainer and Seattle merchandise, along w/ a snack stand serving ice cream and coffee too. While I was looking at the menu to see what ice cream flavors they have, I came across some special smoothies they have. I ended up getting a smoothie that had wildberry and banana in it, and honestly, I forgot the name to it. For their smoothies, they'll ask if you want yogurt or ice cream for your base and I chose the yogurt base. Overall, the smoothie was very good and hopefully I'll come back and try more of their smoothies or dessert snacks next time I go on a road trip to Mount Rainer! :) read more

Wapati Woolies served me the most delicious huckleberry ice cream that I ever tasted. Then again, I never knew that huckleberry ice cream existed. Leaving Mount Rainier National Park, Wapiti Woolies was the last stop of our tour. It is located in a place where cell phone coverage is relatively nonexistent. This place is a building that looks like a house off of Washington Route 410 where the northeast corner of Mount Rainier National Park blends in with Federation Forest State Park. It is a place where trees outnumber concrete and the air is clean. Before our Tour Guide made the 20 minute stop at Wapiti Woolies, he told us the story of Wapati Woolies wool hats. Wapiti Woolies is known for their wool hats business. A good number of customers buying the wool hats are people hiking in Mount Rainier. At any rate, I was oblivious to wool hats and made a beeline through the room selling wool hats and Mount Rainier souveniers to the snack room. If you are leaving Mount Rainier National Park via Washington Route 410, this is the spot to pick up ice cream or a Starbuck's brewed beverage. Highway robbery is nonexistent. A single scoop of ice cream costs $2.50 and a double scoop $4.00. That is about half the price of a Hagan Daaz in a Las Vegas Strip resort. There is a nice selection of cool (literally) flavors to fill the reasonable priced cones with. They include huckleberry (also in sugar free), moose tracks, espresso almond fudge, and marionberry sorbet. If I had been given more time, I would of enjoyed a Starbucks coffee with flavored syrup. Their selection of unique flavored syrups is commendable. They include pumpkin pie, root beer, pralines, banana, and butter rum. I don't know about you, but root beer syrup or banana syrup adds a uniqueness to the coffee drinking experience. At Wapiti Woolies more than their ice cream is cool. So are their employees. They handled the rush of the tour business along with other customers leaving the park in a manner that was fast and friendly. Wapiti Woolies is a place that reminds me of a house with a nice green backyard. Outside the snackroom is an attractive yard with tables and a rocking chair. It is here that I enjoyed breathing in the clean air and licking huckleberry ice cream. Wapiti Woolies is one of those places that I would like to go back to but know in my heart was probably a one time experience. It is uncertain if I will ever be on Washington Route 410 in the northeast corner of Mount Rainier again. It is certain that I am a fan of Wapati Woolies. read more

I had my first homemade fresh huckleberry berry ice cream here. This was one of our last stops after our Mount Rainier hiking tour while on vacation. The main portion of this store is a gift shop with Mount Rainier related souvenirs. As you walk towards the back, there's the ice cream shop portion with seating in the back patio area. They had many choices of fresh homemade ice cream and one sorbet that I was curious about, but didn't try; their marionberry sorbet. I had a taste of the espresso bean ice cream which was pretty good. If you're not taking the tour via tour of us and driving yourself here, parking here is limited. Also, so is cellphone coverage. There was no cell service for me. I didn't mind since I was on vacation which is the whole point anyway. This is probably the only opportunity to get good quality homemade ice cream before heading into the Mount Rainier national Park or soon after leaving it, so I recommend giving this place a try. read more

You ever fall in love with a shop and think about how much of an amazimpact it had on your day? Well that's how I feel about this super cute shop my friend and I stumbled upon as we were getting ready to visit Mt Rainier! This shop has everything from souvenir trinkets, to books, snacks and it even has a little coffee shop in the back! The store has the best stickers I've ever seen- this sounds odd but you have to see their collection to believe it! The store owner was incredibly sweet, this shop made you feel welcome and at home. There was so much in here for us to explore and thankfully they were selling water bottles that came in SUPER helpful for our hike. The guys working at the coffee shop were friendly, had our orders ready quickly and they even washed our new bottles for us and filled it up with water to help us for our hike! Greenwater, WA has a real gem! Driving Hwy 410 in search of fall colors brought me past Wapit Woolies. I wanted a mocha on this fine fall day, I turned around and never looked back! They are located near Crystal Mountain ski resort, perfect if you need a hot coco, mocha, or scoop of Cascade Ice Cream, but wait, there is more. They carry fine quality sportswear. Ski season is around the corner, they are stocked with the cute knitted animal hats they're famous for, racks of fine winter clothes. I passed by the 40% off rack, closing out summer items, found adorable outfit for my granddaughter as I headed for my mocha. The staff is very friendly, helpful, store is just plain inviting. Plenty of parking, room for RV's. Keep an eye out for Woolies, you won't be sorry. read more

I have been shopping here for 30+ years, a favorite family business and nice stop coming back from Crystal. Today I had a horrifying experience! The proprietor approached me with a friendly greeting, and wearing no mask. When I pointed that out politely she said "oh, "that's OK I have a doctors note". This is concurrent with a dramatic surge in Covid cases, with Enumclaw be a hot spot. I am a board certified Internal Medicine physician, and there is no "doctors note" that makes this safe. I just wrote a review on their FB and they took it down. We were there again today and it will be our last time . We have been stopping there for 20 yrs after hiking or snowshoeing. Even our meetup group use to stop there. We were there 2 weeks ago-they raised their prices for the 2nd time, told us they were no longer going to have punch cards. The young women working behind the counter made us feel like they were doing us a favor by waiting on us. Thought we would give it another try today. Same attitude by the young women behind the counter. Now they said they NEVER gave us a star for ice cream when they did 2 weeks ago on the card. Also, the ice cream waffle cone had 1/2 the ice cream as it did 2 weeks ago. I ordered a latte with no foam. When it came with 1/3 cup of foam, I explained that I had asked for no foam. She took it back, took off the foam and handed it back to me. REALLY?? We won't be back and will be telling all our hiking and snowshoeing friends about our experience. Their FB posts states that they are hiring people to work in a fun place with a good attitude. HMMM not so with the group they have there now. Too bad as we use to love to stop here on our way from the mountain. New owners who don't seem to be keeping an eye on their employees and what is going on. read more

I had to stop here for several reasons: restroom break, doggie break, gift shopping, and a place to stretch my legs before heading westward over Chinook Pass. What a cool store. In here you can find all kinds of Rainier National Park gifts. But you can also stock up on any gear you might need for a day of hiking in the woods. They had some nice hiking stuff which was calling my name, but I fought the urge. There is also a coffee shop/deli type thing in the back. Wapiti Woolies is a great place to stop once you are finally free of the city and heading up the hill towards Mt. Ranier and beyond. I needed a knit hat for our backpacking trip and a national forest parking pass for the trailhead. Oddly, the owner/cashier offered us a free trail pass thanks to someone who had "paid it ahead" earlier. Very awkward. We were perfectly able to buy our own pass but either saying "no thanks" to his somewhat dramatic offer, or taking the pass but then buying one for the next person to come in didn't make much sense to me at the time....rather not have the mental exercise over something so trivial.....spent the rest of the trip feeling like a cheapskate for not then also "paying something ahead." Anyway beyond all that it is a quaint and well-stocked place with ice-cream and coffee and you really should stop one your way up or down from the mountains. Owner did provide some good intel about a bear with cubs hanging around our planned hike that we did eventually run into at close range. Glad we had a warning in advance. This is just one of those awesome little mountain shops, well stocked with gear for such little space. Whatever you forgot to bring they'll probably have. Excellent selection of woolen items, and other clothing items as well. I often drop in here to look at the guide books before going on my way, and usually come away with a new treasure. The number of PNW-specific topics is hard to beat! The one downside to this business is the espresso bar. The coffee is always mediocre, and the service is awful. It's like Jeckyl-n-Hyde from the front desk to the back bar; incredibly friendly staff at the front door, and highly unfriendly service at the coffee stand. As long as you don't pass through the final doorway, you will enjoy your visit here. If you could separate the two, the Wapiti business would get 5-Stars from me! read more
