Came across this restaurant in the same strip mall where we had lunch today. Curiosity brought us back in the evening for our dinner exploration. This business advertises " Taste of Home!" Not a big restaurant in size, but very neat ,clean and well lighted. The menu is very extensive with varieties of not just Cantonese, but also Taiwanese, Sichuan and Shanghai. Service was very courteous and informative to provide answers on the menu and with recommendations. This restaurant is known for their Chicken dishes. This was what we ordered for dinner: 1. Chicken and pork stomach soup with pepper and goji berry, 2. Half of steamed free range chicken 3. Steamed whole Osmantus fish 4. Stir-fried young Pea vine. First came the chicken soup, the favor was deep and rich, very tasty. The pepper seasoning was heavy and strong, which helped to raise our appetite and warmed up our body immediately. Then the chicken dish followed, portion is generous, and we could really taste the natural sweetness of the fowl, tender and juicy, very flavorful ideed. Soon the fish arrived, nicely presented and cooked perfectly, with it's natural moisy texture, delicious. Also, the stir fried pea vine was nicely prepared, tender and packed with the wok-fry aroma, in fact, a master piece of a skillful chef! With excellent service and delightful food quality, we enjoyed it very much and were deeply impressed by this restaurant. I am not sure why most of the Chinese Restaurants that are rated 3 stars are actually pretty good and worth at least a 4 star rating! My guess is that the main factor is their service, but in this case Wang Ji did not fail from that from the get go. Throughout the dinner we were served attentively and with courtesy. The accompanying sauce is not the usual kind you would get in 99.9% of the restaurants when serving this dish, but they have made a signature sauce which actually I like a lot! If you are here with a smaller group just order 1/2 chicken and you will have plenty! Stir Fried Clams in Szechuan Pepper & Pepper Corn Amazing mixes of spice and savoury, the sauce is a killer!! I would highly recommend this go with an ice cold beer, it is perfectly stir fried and the clams are cooked well, I would love to see the clams to be more plump, but this is already 95% up there! Great variety of Chinese Wang ji is a pleasantly weird place that has Taiwanese fried chicken, Shanghai Xiao long bao, hk style dimsum and king crab all under one roof. This place is easy to find and parking was abundant. The restaurant is cozy and the interior design was ... neat and rather welcoming. This was the first time we tried this restaurant and was definitely surprised by the extensive menu they have. Some of these items seemed rather out of place on the same menu, but we appreciate the variety. We were gonna order the beef noodles, but unfortunately, that's only in the lunch menu. (Till 3pm) That is actually kinda annoying since couple of the things we wanted were only on the lunch menu. We ended up ordering a seafood fried noodles, spicy fried clams and Taiwanese fried chicken. Yes.. all fried things that are difficult to make at home. They were all rather delicious, particularly the fried chicken. It's the chunky, boneless type which was juicy, flavorful with a good texture on the exterior. The flavor of clam was a bit overwhelming but I enjoyed it. And it's also a good thing that it's located next to a chatime. The restaurant is located in the busy Garden City plaza in Richmond. Parking can be hard to find depending on the time of the day. The interior is well lit and clean. There is a "taste of home" wall sticker and some framed pictures. There is also ample seating but the restaurant was full by the time we finished our lunch. I highly recommend that you come and try the lunch combos. For about $12-14 after tips and tax, you'd get a main dish, rice (depending on the dish) and a honey green tea drink. What a good deal! The portion was decent as well and food was yummy. I really liked the cumin lamb. If you come for dinner (which I haven't yet), I would suggest coming with more people. We found a whole metal can opener in the coconut chicken soup!!! (November 7th 2024) My family decided to order a bunch of dishes, including the coconut chicken soup that sounded interesting. We never had it before so we wanted to try it out. When all of the dishes came, we started eating. My mom poured the soup into the small bowls and we all kept eating. However, when we got near the bottom of the soup (like maybe 1/3 of the soup left), my mom felt something near the bottom and found a whole can opener inside... So, we asked the waitress about it and she took it to the back for around 3-5 minutes. When she came back, it was the exact same soup-- same amount as before, just without the can opener inside it. All she said was one word: "sorry". The waitresses were pretty arrogant in my opinion. We thought that we would get a new one because what we saw was so unsanitary! We didn't even want to drink it anymore, knowing what was inside of it. Who knows if that can opener was dirty? Why was it in the soup in the first place?? How would someone miss that. We were even charged the full amount. I've never seen this happen before. Ridiculus. Also, we ordered 2 iced teas right at the start and they didn't arrive until a few minutes before we paid the bill. It wasn't like crowded or anything. I remember there were roughly 5-6 tables full at the time. Not as many people were there so I didn't understand the delay. Another thing i'd like to add was the awkwardness when the two waitresses continuously took turns leaning toward our table every 3-5 minutes-- I didn't find that necessary at all. Small restaurant in the plaza on Blundell and Garden City. Went there at around 5:30 on a Saturday and got a small table without waiting, but the place was packed shortly afterwards. This place serves the regional Cantonese cuisine from Zhanjiang. The signatures dishes are their chicken. They have a big steamed chicken dish that you have to reserve and preorder, which we did not get. Instead, we ordered half of traditional free-range chicken, and that was delicious. Very flavorful and soft chicken. The coconut chicken soup was excellent too. We also ordered the fish roe and shrimp fried rice. The fish roe gave the fried rice a bright color, but didn't add much to the taste. Also got an order of the stir-fried halibut pieces, and that was good, and the ong choy was decent. For dessert, we got the gooey custard steamed buns. The buns tasted alright, but I've had better ones at other restaurants. Overall a pretty decent meal. The bill was $100, which is not cheap. The dish of braised butterfish tasted good and it was big. I loved the chicken fried rice cake. The two different pots of soup tasted great as well. Basically each dish of food was great. There was no MSG. I didn't feel thirsty after eating so much food!! Ambiance: great! The environment was quite comfortable giving us a "homey" feel. The interior design of the restaurant was not very fancy, but it was fair good enough for a family type of restaurant. Service: each server was friendly. I liked the one who told me which dishes were popular in the restaurant. Basically she went through the menu from the beginning to the end with me. I really appreciate her time and service. Saw this restaurant the other day when I went to try out Ginger Indian Cuisine. It looked really busy so I figured it must be good to try out! I came back a few days later and I was disappointed. It started off well as we got seated quickly but for some odd reason they didn't give us menus. The table next to us was having their order taken by the waitress so we figured she saw us menu-less and would give us the menu after they were done. But nope! She took the menus and threw it on the empty table behind her. Luckily a few minutes later another waitress came by to ask if we got menus yet. Ordered our food: got two bowls of rice ($1.75 each), honey spareribs ($12.95), and deep fried chicken ($7.50). I thought the menu prices were were on the pricier side in general. It took awhile for the food to come but during the meantime I was observing everything else happening in the restaurant. The food for the table next to us came and the customer discovered a piece of metal (likely from what they use to clean pots/pans) in the food! She called a waitress to look so they took the dish away and came back later with the dish remade. The waitresses seemed to be scrambling around a lot and one time I asked for more tea and they just forgot about it. Finally my food came. The chicken was a bit salty but tasted good, the honey spareribs on the sweeter side but tasted good in its own way. The elderly lady next to me and her husband finished eating and she needed an extra napkin so she asked for it. The waitress took forever to bring the napkin and when she did she just kinda threw it on the table. Had a really delicious dinner here last night! Portions were good, flavours on point and prices were reasonable. We opted to go with more Cantonese style dishes but their extensive menu includes typical dishes from Taiwan to Shanghai. Yellow chicken - Probably the best I ever had. Meaty, juicy and came with a side of dipping soy sauce. I requested for a small side of ginger and onion sauce that usually comes with the chicken for no additional charge. Eggplant - Tons of sauce and plump egg and cooked to perfection. The dish also included some tree mushrooms and carrots which was nice! Egg yolk shrimp - Omg the sweet and savory salty duck egg yolk coating on the shrimp was divine. Black pepper steak sizzling plate - Juicy and tender pieces of steak served with red and green peppers. Service was good and our teas were consistently refilled. Food came out quickly and hot. I usually don't head to this neck of Richmond, but I decided to give this restaurant a try since it was right next to one of my favourite bubbletea places. The lunch menu was a typical Chinese menu, but with a focus on rice and noodles (carb heavy). There was also a variety of side dishes to order from, like dumplings. I was craving curry beef brisket, but Wang Ji didn't have it so I randomly picked meat fried noodles. I was expecting 'fried noodles', but the dish came more like a shanghai style noodles, which is a thicker noodle and a wetter dish. Even though the dish wasn't expected, it tasted really good. The portions were big, but I managed to finish it because it was very flavourful, even better than some Shanghainese restaurants I've been to. I liked my dish a lot. My dining mate had the beef noodles and seemed to enjoy it. He wasn't able to finish the bowl because of the size, but did mention to me that Wang Ji does get busy for dinner so it appears that Wang Ji is a solid place. The best mapo tofu place I know! It's wonderfully seasoned and they use the right tofu. Silky soft tofu unlike other places where they use hard tofu. It's not too spicy but there's a lot of depth to the flavour. They use a lot of spices and you can clearly taste it! It is a little pricy for just the tofu at $13.60 after tax but you can always make the rice at home to save some $ but it's hard to find delicious mapo tofu. Highly recommend! read more

A definite new favourite in the neighborhood. On a weekday, we decided to try Wang Ji because Shikisai is closed on Mondays. The space used to be a Chinese restaurant that has been there for more than two decades. I like what they have now done with the space, it's much more spacious and modern. They have a variety of Chinese stir-fry dishes on the menu, along with fried rice, noodles, and some Taiwanese dishes. I opted for the pork dumplings as well as the deep fried squid tentacles. They also have a selection of bubble tea, I got a matcha and red bean slush, which was delicious. The dumplings arrived not long after ordering, and when I asked for chili paste, they gave me both the paste, as well as the one with the chili flakes and oil. The dumplings were homemade, with a pork and cabbage filling. I especially liked it with the chili oil. The tentacles took a bit longer, but they were one of the best I've had. A light batter, and not overly oily. The squid was also not dry or chewy. The servers here speak both English and Chinese, and friendly. They are also licensed. We saw many of the other dishes that other tables ordered, and they all looked good. I will have to return and try them! read more

Yes, This is is good enough that I booked a reservation for office staff to have another lunch. Our friend Vincci L posted originally about this place and I figured it would be worth a try. My friend and I came to test it out. I had ordered a shrimp fried rice which was ok. Good for this type of restaurant. I also had another dish which fared well. In fact all our dishes left us with a good enough consideration to book our company lunch. And so I did, for 20 of us. Unfortunately we had some staff that don't really know much about Taiwanese food and they were left to order something they probably shouldn't have. One collegue, a vegetarian ended up ordering one of my favourite dishes as a main course, (black fungus in spicy vinegar sauce) It was supposed to be a side dish eaten with other dishes and some rice. Obviously she didn't like it, but she's a trooper and willing to try something else next time and we can order stuff to share to get more variety. Another Three colleagues ordered the SAME dish of spicy Thai Chicken nuggets! Then kept complaining how it was not what it was described in the menu. Oh vey! "This is not Thai! It's sweet and sour". One colleague kept complaining, but that's kinda what she does, is complain a lot. You can't take her out for Chinese food. Some people simply have "negative taste buds" and closed minds. There are others that just haven't experienced certain dishes outside of their culinary expectations but are willing to give it the old college try. Those people can be fun to dine with. They're willing to learn and take on new experiences and not complain. All in all, I think we were able to introduce more people to this place. Some of whom continue to dine here. I think that's great! Service is average. Food is average, there are some dishes they do better while others like the spicy Thai chicken nuggets may just be a filler dish in the menu. The ingredients are not fresh and the restaurant manager has a bad attitude! I ordered takeout for two dishes to have a party with friends, one is salted eggs shrimp and the other is cumin lamb. Unfortunately, the shrimp was not fresh. My Friends said that the taste was like it had been thawed several times and then re-frozen, so the whole plate cannot be eaten; the cumin lamb is over-fried, and oily. So I called the restaurant on the next day to remind them not to do business like this. At that time, the manager offered me to order two more dishes as compensation. The manager said that she would tell her colleagues and there is a record as long as I give my phone number. I thought I was satisfied by their hospitality. A week later, I called again to order a meal, and tentatively asked whether the credit was still available on the phone. The operator told me that it was ok, and she would calculate the details when I arrived. But the result made me feel that not only did they not apologize sincerely, but they were playing tricks on customers. The person who looked like a manager was in charge of paying the bill and told me. Firstly, the shrimps were originally chilled and not fresh; Secondly, the previous experienced credit didn't count unless I returned two dishes from a week ago. The server seemed to want to rush us into ordering, as she kept coming to our table 4x. We ordered XLB ($8.95 for 8 pc), Shanghai fried noodles ($10.95), spicy beef noodles ($11.50) & pan-fried thin Shanghai noodles w/ chicken ($10.95). XLB was NOT up to par. Wrap was too thick & easy to tear so you don't get any of the soup. The vinegar tasted off. The beef was so tough in the spicy beef noodles, I had to spit out half of it. The wrong kind of cabbage was used (Taiwanese) in the Shanghai fried noodles, which made the dish too moist. The pan-fried thin noodles just looked sad, very limpy. Not sure why it's classified as Asian Fusion. It's taiwanese with some Vancouver-ish influences. Mostly stirfry and clay pot style dishes. They don't have beef noodle soup. Everything tasted pretty good. Very little use of MSG. They claim to use free range chicken in their chicken dishes and I think it's true. The interior decor is well appointed. The restrooms are very clean and nicely decorated. Service was quick and friendly. In general, it was quite a good experience. Food came out fast. They have good food but very bad service attitude from most of their servers. We'lll stop frequenting this place.

Since everywhere else was packed today (Mother's Day), we found this gem. In descending order of most likely to re-order and favourite to less favourable (although it was all delicious): dry (big) prawns (sweet & spicy), hainanese chicken, cabbage (with yam noodles), beef rolls, hakka pork & tentacles (with tofu & celery), jelly fish with cabbage and chicken dumplings. The main dishes come with a big bowl of rice. All this, for about $60ish, including tax - great value AND it was really good (flavourful, good portion, not greasy and looked good). I was seriously contemplating not posting this because I fear this place will just get super busy with more awesome reviews! :P Other somewhat trivial matters - lots of parking, they take reservations, they take credit card (yay - points) and we were able to get a seat right away. Delicious dishes~Taiwanese, Szechuan, shanghainese all in one place! Just wish they could lowered the amount of salt and oil..Other than that's it's perfect! our family's favorite!!! read more
