I love coming here and almost always walk away with a new plant. They have a large variety of houseplants, but the star is their outdoor & garden selection. I spend an hour every time I visit. I have been wanting to come here for some time and it doesn't disappoint. They have a wonderful selection of pots. Painted and just terracotta. They also have some of the Mexican style as well. The layout is just beautiful. I was looking for cacti on this visit & I was very pleased with the selection of all sizes. They are a little higher, but wonderful quality. The train is a treat to watch. Big selection of herbs & flowers. Everyone is helpful & friendly. I have yet to visit a nursery where they were this kind & helpful. You should come here if you're looking for a good variety of indoor & outdoor plants, knowledgeable staff, and high quality plants in general. As an aside, there is also an AMAZING motorized train display they've made in the garden & it's mesmerizing. Great to bring your kids over to see! However, if you're looking for some more common houseplants such as dracaena, monstera, or fiddle leaf fig for instance, you're better off heading to Home Depot because their prices are about 25% (or more) lower than Walter Anderson. A farmer's market will also be a good option for cheaper house plants. At this nursery, you're looking to spend a lot more on just about everything. For instance, a 4ft or higher fiddle leaf fig might cost you $79 at Home Depot, but here, it will cost over $100. A medium monstera plant will be about $12.99 at Home Depot, but here a small one with like 3 leaves will be around $16 or $17 mark. But the plants here are definitely VERY WELL taken care of, though, so bear that in mind. I don't think I saw a single withering leaf though I browsed hundreds of plants. Every plant looked green & healthy. It was crazy! Another example of why you might want to come here instead of a big box store is that they have a lot of unique plants too. For instance, there are poinsettias with lovely colored designs on their leaves I have never seen anywhere else! So beautiful! They also had the most GINORMOUS poinsettias I'd ever seen. If I were reviewing Poway, I'd give it a 1-star for being so darned hot. But WAN in Poway saved my day today. I went to a nursery in San Marcos for pond plants, but the selection was disappointing. So, I decided to swing by WAN in Poway and that made my trip so far up north worthwhile. They had a ton of floating plants and marginal ones too. They had this fascinating looking very tiny floating plant that they gave me for free as well as some 4-leaf clovers. I found 2 good specimens of plants that I wanted, so I left quite happy. Haven't actually been to this location but I did call to have a plant reserved for me. The woman over the phone was very knowledgeable and held my plant (last one!) until my brother could pick it up for me. Starter size 4" was much more affordable than the 6" established and climbing Rhaphidophora tetrasperma, but I am patient. It has taken off incredibly since my purchase. No issues with pests or root rot. Highly recommend and can't wait to browse this brick and mortar myself. read more

Fine Nursery for Basic Needs This place is a smaller nursery for the basic needs, it has trees, flowers, cactus & gardening supplies, even a little chew chew train which goes around for the kids. This place has been in Poway forever & it is a fine local nursery. It will supply you with whatever you need as the basics for the gardening. If you are a professional gardener & are in search of specific type of rare fruit tree, particular breed of rose with certain color & fragrance, an exotic luxurious cactus or a rare colored succulent, then this is not the place for them. For an average person, this place would do but for a professional gardener with exotic taste & needs, this place is very basic. Prices are average & the selection is limited. This place has sufficient basic selection, much better than Home Depot but no where near Moon Valley Nurseries (specifically when it was Evergreen) which is a giant drive through shopping center for plants. Overall, it is a good local nursery which comes handy. read more

Who else got into gardening because of the pandemic? I was not a gardener before but now I spend a lot of time planting. The selection at Walter Andersen is amazing. I never knew there were so many varieties of basil and strawberry and other herbs and vegetables. And the fruit tree varieties is excellent. I wanted a Satsuma Tangerine tree and was able to find one here. The staff is super knowledgeable as compared to Home Depot and Lowe's so the slightly higher prices is worth it to get advice because I need it. Also, the quality of plants is great. I bought a basil plant from Home Depot and it has become a sad little thing even with all the tips I learned from YouTube. Then I bought the same variety from Walter Andersen and with the same amount of care, it is doing so much better. Same with the strawberries. I put the ones I bought at Home Depot and Walter Andersen in the same container but only the one from this place is doing well. Maybe the others are feeling intimidated. My only complaint is that even though the staff is very helpful, they can be hard to find out in the plant area. But the parking here is very good no matter how crowded it gets. read more

These guys have a great selection of all variety of plant, tree, shrub and garden supplies. There is easy parking and the prices were ok. Giving three stars because the staff was so unwelcoming. Spoke to two different gardeners. Neither cracked a smile the whole time and looked like they were tired or bored of my questions, even though one of them approached me to ask if I had any questions. This is easily one of my favorite garden centers I have ever been to! I was not prepared for how huge this nursery is. They have a huge, beautiful selection and seem to have any plant you could think of. I heard they had a train outside, and I didn't realize it was a whole model train railroad with multiple cars/trains buzzing all over! I could've spent an hour looking at all the little details in the model train set up. It was absolutely adorable! They also have a few chickens in a small coop outside too. Run away and save your money from these thieves! They are a shady and unprofessional business. The owner lacks managerial skills and so do the rest of their "management" staff. I have purchased many plants from this store and they are close to dead plants. My mom, aunt and uncle have also purchased from here and they all die. They are expensive. Home Depot and Lowes plants are in better condition than this nursery. That is not ok. The office manager, Gretchen Dutcher, seems to talk to me like we are all idiots. She made it seem like they were going to make amends and she lied. Then Gretchen states she can help my other family members and try to make amends and I told her I am here and you can make amends with me. And Gretchen said no. But she wanted my family members names and phone numbers? Make it make sense! My other family members have already stopped buying from here. But, I wanted to give them a chance since they are a family business and I wanted to support small businesses. But, it is not fair that they sell almost dead plants that just last enough time and then die after the very short, 90 day return policy. Even within the 90 day period, they will not return them like other reviewers have posted. They are criminals! Gretchen said we try to make things right and customers happy. I told her yes so as a small family business wouldn't you help me this one time to show that you care about your customers and you stand by your word. And, of course, she said no. She said I can use the service to revive plant's next time and I told her why would I continue to shop here if you didn't make amends to help as a courtesy? I tried to reach out to Ken Andersen, the criminal owner, and he said: "I am sure you will be more satisfied with shopping at Home Depot and Lowes in the future. If you are looking for that hot Talavera pottery...this is your spot!! They have so much to choose from! I went in to shop for succulents and left with pottery instead. I prefer the more unique-looking succulents. Unfortunately, I found only the usual ones here. I might stop in again to see if there are additions to their succulent garden. I will come back when I am looking for that beautiful pottery. If you have littles that like trains, there is a really cool one that you can watch outside. Super cute. read more

One of our favorite nurseries! This place has many plants that aren't carried by the big box stores and can order ones they don't have for you. My kids grew up loving the trains & we all enjoyed going often when they were young. The only reason I marked them down one star is because their prices are a bit higher than other places but I'm usually willing to pay more to help support small local businesses. Also answering phones and getting someone to help you when calling in isn't one of their strong points. All that aside it's definitely worth a visit if you're looking for quality plants and a nice variety too. read more

Ok, full disclosure....I go to Andersens as a relaxation experience. That said, ive never gone and not bought something. They have excellent prices, plants that are healthy, and some you may not expect. I've bought 6 trees from them, and im waiting for the bare root tress to come in this year. So you know you're in the right place to buy your gardening needs, when there's a giant Easter Island sculpture to greet you at the front door. I have been searching for three weeks for this one perfect amphora for my rock garden. Not only did I find it here, but it was also a great price! While I was there I also picked up some lantanas, Lavender, chives, a bird house and bird feeder, and a few other odds and ends. Everyone on the staff was super helpful. They have a very wide selection here of both California natives and non-natives, and I was able to find a 'Vicki Romo' white sage...except it had two price tags on it! The cashier and another gentleman got to work googling which one it could be, and even called the growers for me to figure out the mystery and confirm that it was indeed a 'Vicki Romo'. I could stay here all day! They have a large variety of plants. I went here specifically looking for a certain succulent that I couldn't find anywhere else. They had them here! I ended up buying more than I came for. So many to choose from and they're in great condition. This is hands down the nicest and biggest nursery I've been to. My 1 year old loved watching the train setup. And also the all the birds that hung around the bird feeders. Who am I kidding, I did too! This place is very clean and well kept. What a lovely nursery! Especially if you're into... model trains... and the odd dinosaur. The actual selection of, well, everything actually plant-related here is really really good. This is probably one of the better nurseries I've been to! 1. They have an extensive seed supply, with a variety of species from a variety of seed banks. 2. Great selection of gardening supplies, plants, trees, pots, soil, etc. 3. The outdoor section is really quite big. 4. The people who work here are very nice, and helpful! So there's a really delightfully odd thing about this place: apparently the landscape designer has a thing for model trains. At first when you catch a glimpse of it you're like, ah so cute! Then you see how much there is and you're like "........wow", and you realize that wow sounds exactly like Owen Wilson saying wow. It's not just a train. There's villages recreated in miniature that span different time periods, and trains connect them all. I mean it's really a "thing". An extensive thing. Several months ago I spent over $ 300. for two dwarf orange trees. I read the watering recommendations and why leafs may turn yellow or curve. Our trees had, what I considered to many yellow leafs. We decided to go back to the nursery and talk to someone. That is when we met Heather. What a knowledgeable person and very friendly. She suggested we bring in some leafs. I like the plant selection at Walter Anderson in San Diego, so I had to check out the Poway location. The Poway location is not as big and has less selection, but they have a miniature train track for kids. I like the California native plant section. Plants looked healthy. They had some faux river fountains that are good examples if you're considering installing such a thing at your house. Customer service was fine, staff was polite and helpful. read more

My wife and I moved to San Diego from Los Angeles (Not a difficult move.) 15 years ago, when we retired. I had always enjoyed gardening and had my favorite nurseries up there. But San Diego was a blank slate for me. I tried everything. I dealt with big growers, where I had to drive from section to section, using a map, and no one could answer a question, except the two guys in the hut with the cash register. I bought from small specialty nurseries, where the options were limited and expensive, but where the people were knowledgeable -- occasionally to an annoying fault. A few years into my San Diego gardening life, I found Walter Andersen Nursery in Poway. Everyone there is helpful and most people are knowledgeable and they will search for anything you want.
