As an avid succulent collector and plant lover, I am always on the hunt for equally passionate nurseries with beautiful and, if I'm lucky, unusual beauties looking for new homes. In finding this nursery, I thought I had found a wonderful source for just that but have since been proven wrong. Before I continue, I would like to add that I have a few hundred plants, almost all of which are succulents, and have shopped at and ordered from many, many different nurseries and distributors with great success, including doing so for rare and unusual subjects.
I really was thrilled when I first stumbled across this nursery, which markets itself as one of the largest suppliers in the country and which does have quite a few hard to find and lovely specimens. I was a bit taken aback when I went to check out and saw that, despite their apparent size, they only accept checks and money orders. I figured they were perhaps a bit more old school and the plants I'd chosen were lovely so I went ahead and mailed a check. It is November, I am in Boston, and I am well aware of and concerned about frost-related risks when shipping plants this time of year. However, their website, after warning of such risks, proudly proclaimed that they had never had issues with any plant despite shipping to places like Alaska and Maine in the heart of winter so it seemed as though they were experienced in handling cold weather shipping and were very confident in their abilities to do so.
A few days later, I received an email from the eponymous Daniel confirming the receipt of my order and warning me about the risks of shipping in cold weather. I figured he might have additional insights in real time as opposed to a generic disclaimer on their website and so, attempting to defer to his many years of experience I asked if he felt his website's assertion of 100% success shipping in winter applied right now.
Every other person I have ever ordered from will either check the zip code of the order to look into weather, offer their thoughts, or generally appear to care on some level. Daniel's response amounted to it being my problem, up to me, and he can't keep track of weather and would burn my check if I wanted to cancel. I replied a few days later, very politely acknowledging that he can't be expected to constantly remain aware of all the weather everywhere but that I figured it couldn't hurt to ask his opinion since he has so much experience. I also replied saying I would like to move forward with the order.
His response a few hours later stunned me:
"Hi Alyssa
I did not hear back from you and today was shipping day so I burned your check that came in late saterday.
When you check the box and agree to the terms and conditions I do not have to remind that the warning is on each page.
I just did because like the first plant for $4.50 is seven years old and you have no right to ask for replacement when you should order the right time of year or take the risk.
You can reorder next year if the plants are in stock and after the ice cubes melt outside and after your check clears I will ship."
I absolutely do not understand the confrontational, accusatory, dismissive, and rude tone of almost the entirety of our interactions. I acknowledged multiple times I understood the risks of cold weather shipping, was very polite, would never dream of requesting a replacement plant if there was an issue because of the time of year I chose to order, and am more than a little confused why he's now saying he will only ship in the spring when his website so proudly proclaims winter shipping viability.
Ultimately, this was the most unpleasant experience I have ever had with any nursery, grower, distributor, or plant related business I have ever (tried) to shop with and I am still stunned by how the owner seems to actively dislike customers or, at the very least, me. I adore plants and greatly admire those who work to raise and share them with the world and was so hoping this nursery would be a fantastic source for just that kind of passion and product, but that is obviously not the case. Based on the very poor customer service, dated payment methods, and inconsistent shipping availability I would not recommend this nursery. read more
