Walmart Wine & Spirits -- Closed at 8:15 on a Friday?
    Jim F.

On a recent visit to this Walmart we decided to check out the Wine & Spirits shop attached to the business. I was looking for a hard-to-find mixer (a specific brand of ginger beer) and thought that a Wine and Spirits shop my be a great place to find one. We got done with our Walmart (proper) shopping, walked out the door and headed to Wine and Spirits on a Friday (January 6, 2023) to find the door locked. I checked my watch...it said 8:15 pm. The sign on the door said its open hours were 7am to 11pm. I looked at my watch again and, sure enough, 8:15pm on a Friday they should be open....but they weren't. No sign on the door, no Post-It® note saying "Back in 10 minutes", nothing. Just a locked door. And with that my one visit to this Walmart Wine and Spirits wasn't a visit at all...just a disappointment and a promise that the next time I'm in need of something they may have I will 100% take my business elsewhere.

Walmart super center located in the Middletown portion of Lousiville Kentucky off catch crowded and business heavy Shelbyville road. This on the outside and really on the outside is what I call a "fancy" wal mart. They have a patio area with greenery in the middle of parking lot. The have nice benches out in front of the store. Inside they keep the store pretty clean. Like any wal mart the service is hit and miss but I feel like this center puts more effort in because it is in a popular area and there are several other competitors and options literally lurking around the corner. I personally don't mind wal mart locations. They will have a good sale and locations like this that has a Grocery and take some pride in the work and appearance makes it a much better experience. So kudos to This location on that.

A line to the self checkout at Wal Mart supercenter in Louisville, KY.

Although the prices are a bit spendy, the quality is far superior to national chain stores. Indoors is a cornucopia of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and prepared cuisines (both hot and cold dinner/lunches). They match and are comparable in price to the larger chain grocery stores and far more fresh and appealing. My wife and I opted for prepared salads I chose the Asian one and it was great. The dressing in particular was to die for.The store is exceptionally clean but rather small and difficult to navigate in such tight quarters. Rumor has it they plan to expand the facility. Parking can also be a beast so it is best to find a spot in the adjacent strip mall near the UPS store. It is so worth it though.

There are 4 Paul's Markets in Louisville, and I am fortunate to live very close to the Middletown location, which opened in 1996. Every summer the outdoor area is chock full of beautiful flowering plants, both annual and perennial varieties. The plants today were lush, healthy, and absolutely stunning. They were priced in line with the local nursery that we most frequent, which is a bit higher than the big box stores. However, as with most things, you get what you pay for. The grocery has a wonderful deli that includes a hot bar and a wide variety of prepared sandwiches, pastas dishes, salads, and deserts. The salad selection was extensive. I opted for a cobb salad that included chicken, bacon, egg, tomatoes, lettuce, blue cheese crumbles and dressing! It was a steal for only $6.99 and absolutely delicious. I chose the honey mustard dressing and it was a chef's kiss! Throughout the grocery area one will find a lot of specialty items such as several types of gluten-free breads, seasonal fruits, regional candies, and much, much more. Paul's is a great place to grab a lunch that is far healthier than the plethora of fast-food options for just a couple more dollars!

It is not a large store and doesn't have all the variety I'm use to with the Kroger Marketplace I usually shop at. In fact even without all the extra merchandise like clothes , etc. the shelf space is small enough that for grocery products such as can soup it doesn't have the same choices I can choose from in a larger store. The biggest drawback for me is I usually use a motorized cart because of disability but I have never been able to get one of their two carts that I've been told exist. When I go in here I have to be able to walk to the area of the store my needed item will be in. For most people this store would be perfectly acceptable. For me I really have to decide if I have a true need that I don't want to stop elsewhere for. It is not the most handicap accessible location.

The aisles were organized, easy to navigate visually, and everything felt freshly stocked. The seasonal section was a highlight -- most of the items were grouped together, which made browsing simple. That said, not everything seasonal was in one place. Some seasonal items, like refrigerated goods and flowers, were spread throughout the store, so it took a little extra effort to find everything. Checkout was quick and efficient, and I loved that they accept Apple Pay -- always a plus for convenience. One thing to know before you go: you do need to bring your own bags. If you forget, they do have options -- paper bags for about $0.12 and reusable bags for under $1 -- which is actually pretty affordable, but still something to keep in mind. From an accessibility standpoint, there's definitely room for improvement. During my visit, there was only one motorized scooter available, which can be limiting for customers who rely on them. If it's already in use, there aren't many alternatives, and combined with some of the item placement throughout the store, it made navigating a bit more difficult than it should be.

I had a specific item I needed today that my friend says she gets at Aldi and after walking around every aisle I found the pasta section, but it was lackluster as is the entire store. They had no gluten-free noodles in their pasta selection so I figured it had to be in another part of the store m, like a gluten free area, so I asked a uniformed employee who looked like they were putting together a pick up order or something where I could find gluten-free noodles and she hastily pointed to an area in a general direction, I asked "in the same section as the regular noodles?" And she said "yeah if we have any." So I went back and looked again at the pasta section and there were no gluten-free options and certainly not any gluten-free lasagna noodles, which is what the search was for today. It'll likely be my last trip to an Aldi.
