I took off work in order to bring our dog to get groomed because we have family coming in for Christmas. I made an appointment before hand, and what was shown to me online was 3 options. None of these were quite what I was looking, for leaving me confused because of their other options they talked about in their description. I assumed that low shed meant trimming so I selected that, nail trim, and a bath. I have a larger dog so it's hard to get her in the car, and to the establishment but it was the closest I could find near us because we live out in the more country side of Elgin. Nonetheless, I trusted that Hair Of The Dog would make this trip worth it. When I entered for my appointment, the front desk lady told me I had only scheduled a bathing. This was not true, and I explained to her that the place's website was really confusing and I couldn't find the options that were advertised before. She told me I should've schedule some sort of maintenance appointment. I told her their options were limited online, and she responded saying it must've been because those options were not available at the time I scheduled it. This was very frustrating because of the trouble I went through to get here. Now I will be grooming the dog single handedly on top of everything else I have to do before our guests arrive. Normally I wouldn't be leaving a negative review on local places like this, but unfortunately it's a completely accurate experience. My advice would be to get the appointment scheduling fixed and accurate.

After a groom my dog had some issues breathing and I just questioned he might have caught something there. They rudely refused my future business which was very demeaning to me. I am extremely disappointed with how Bastrop Veterinary Hospital handled my dog's appointment…read moretoday. My dog is a Great Dane with advanced dilated cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation, and congestive heart failure. He is essentially on hospice care and takes more than 30 medications a day. Because of his severe heart condition, his cardiologist has instructed that he cannot be vaccinated due to the risk to his heart. Bastrop Veterinary Hospital already knows this. My dog has been treated there before, including earlier this year when they performed tests that were ordered by his cardiologist. They have our account, his medical history, and all of this information on file. I scheduled a nail trim appointment because my dog is in pain from overgrown nails and he will not allow me to trim them at home. I explained his medical condition in the appointment notes and that he is reactive and would need to be handled carefully. Before the appointment, the clinic even called and left a voicemail reminding me to give him anxiety medication before coming in. I still had trazodone from a previous visit, so I medicated him 90 minutes before the appointment exactly as instructed. Getting him to the clinic is not easy. Car rides are extremely stressful for him because of his advanced heart disease. I specifically chose this clinic because it is close to my home and minimizes that stress. When we arrived, I told them I would wait in the car because he does not do well around other dogs. They initially agreed. However, they then brought me inside and had me wait in the lobby anyway while they prepared a room, which immediately put him into a stressful situation I had asked to avoid. When they finally took him to the back, I placed a muzzle on him and tightened it to make sure he could not get it off so that staff would be safe. They told me it would only take a moment. Six minutes later, someone came out with a clipboard and told me they could not perform the nail trim because he is not vaccinated. This was shocking and extremely frustrating. They already knew my dog's medical history. They had treated him previously without vaccinations because of his severe heart condition. They had just called me beforehand to ensure he was medicated for the visit. Yet no one bothered to mention that they would refuse treatment once I arrived. Instead, they let me go through the process of medicating a critically ill dog, putting him through the stress of a car ride, muzzling him, and waiting, only to tell me after the fact that they wouldn't help him. My dog is in pain because his nails cannot be trimmed safely at home, which is exactly why I brought him to professionals. If the clinic had simply called ahead of time and said they could not perform the service, that would have been understandable. Instead, they put a very sick dog through unnecessary stress and wasted our time. It was incredibly disappointing and frankly unacceptable.

So we put down our sweet Cleo and these ladies were so gracious. One of the vet techs was hugging me while I broke down. I will always remember the kindness they showed us. And how they loved on sweet Cleo until her final breath. I am so thankful they helped us end her suffering in a loving way.

I called and spoke with Megan and gave her the run down as I have two dogs. Mind you the package was dropped off at 10:30 and they were already in it by 11:00. I didn't get home till after 6 so the poison was already in their system for a substantial amount of time. She quoted $600-800 per dog just to get started at the minimum... I told her i did not have that kind of money laying around. She then took it upon herself to then dig the knife deeper by saying I didn't even have $100 for them... seriously? Who says shit like that?? I hope people see this and judge the type of people that are employed at this clinic. I will never reach out to yall again.
