I am extremely disappointed with how Bastrop Veterinary Hospital handled my dog's appointment today. My dog is a Great Dane with advanced dilated cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation, and congestive heart failure. He is essentially on hospice care and takes more than 30 medications a day. Because of his severe heart condition, his cardiologist has instructed that he cannot be vaccinated due to the risk to his heart. Bastrop Veterinary Hospital already knows this. My dog has been treated there before, including earlier this year when they performed tests that were ordered by his cardiologist. They have our account, his medical history, and all of this information on file. I scheduled a nail trim appointment because my dog is in pain from overgrown nails and he will not allow me to trim them at home. I explained his medical condition in the appointment notes and that he is reactive and would need to be handled carefully. Before the appointment, the clinic even called and left a voicemail reminding me to give him anxiety medication before coming in. I still had trazodone from a previous visit, so I medicated him 90 minutes before the appointment exactly as instructed. Getting him to the clinic is not easy. Car rides are extremely stressful for him because of his advanced heart disease. I specifically chose this clinic because it is close to my home and minimizes that stress. When we arrived, I told them I would wait in the car because he does not do well around other dogs. They initially agreed. However, they then brought me inside and had me wait in the lobby anyway while they prepared a room, which immediately put him into a stressful situation I had asked to avoid. When they finally took him to the back, I placed a muzzle on him and tightened it to make sure he could not get it off so that staff would be safe. They told me it would only take a moment. Six minutes later, someone came out with a clipboard and told me they could not perform the nail trim because he is not vaccinated. This was shocking and extremely frustrating. They already knew my dog's medical history. They had treated him previously without vaccinations because of his severe heart condition. They had just called me beforehand to ensure he was medicated for the visit. Yet no one bothered to mention that they would refuse treatment once I arrived. Instead, they let me go through the process of medicating a critically ill dog, putting him through the stress of a car ride, muzzling him, and waiting, only to tell me after the fact that they wouldn't help him. My dog is in pain because his nails cannot be trimmed safely at home, which is exactly why I brought him to professionals. If the clinic had simply called ahead of time and said they could not perform the service, that would have been understandable. Instead, they put a very sick dog through unnecessary stress and wasted our time. It was incredibly disappointing and frankly unacceptable. read more

Bastrop Veterinary Hospital violated my right to informed consent, my right to documents, and abandoned my 13 year-old dog mid cancer treatment. My dog needed to have a growth removed. I asked them for an expert surgeon who has 10 years of experience doing difficult procedures like this. They agreed, then completely ignored my request and assigned a vet with less than 2 years total experience. They gave an all-inclusive quote. When I first saw Lilli post-surgery I was distraught over the quality of their work. The sutures were sloppy and poorly done. Then the front desk tried to charge me about 9% more that the quote telling me when I enquired "It's probably just the taxes." Nope they simply overcharged me but they did at least refund that overcharge. They overcharged me because they don't keep proper track of signed consent records, and instead just choose to wing it. My dog was easily able to get around their cone to the wound removing two sutures, so I had to bring her back. They stapled the wound closed, and incorrectly told me the cone was fine and just to watch her. OFC she was immediately able to get around the cone (like I told them multiple times in the appointment) and removed two staples. When I spoke to them again they refused to take responsibility for it and told me I would need to pay for any extra care caused by their failure. By this time all trust in BVH was lost. A few days later they asked me to call the Vet to review the biopsy. I asked them to email me the results, and I would speak to her later. They told me they couldn't. I insisted they email me my pet's records which is my right. They did send the records along with a "break up email" accusing me of unprofessional behavior saying they would no longer care for my dog. There was never even a shred of unprofessionalism on my part, while they have indeed been unprofessional throughout. Now they are refusing to complete the suture and staple removal which is a direct line item in the quote for the surgery already paid for. Their own records proved they never discussed or collected signed consent forms for anything and tried to generate "ghost documents" of the consent forms for the records -- some might call this fraud but at the very least its a fundamental failure of veterinary ethics and rules. They have no signed consent for the price quote, for the medical services, DNR or boarding. This vet cuts every corner, ignores your basic and valid requests, then punishes you when you express your rights to documentation or informed consent. I have reported them to state authorities, and was assigned an investigator and case ID number within 12 hours. I will diligently work with state auhorities to make sure Bastrop Veterinary Hospital NEVER DOES THIS to another trusting client. I urge anyone who cares about their pets to go elsewhere. read more

When we were short on time to get our dog in when his health took a turn for the worse, they were more than accommodating. His poor body just had given up & we couldn't stand to see him suffer any more. They were so kind, so sympathetic. Afterwards they even sent us a card and all the staff signed it. I would like to put 5 stars, for I am very happy about all their services except on one point. They are competent, prices are moderate, compassionate and thoughtful, in short great for everything but this: they have a strong tendancy to propose euthanasia too easily. They recommended euthanasia for 3 of my cats who survived anyway after a treatment, some being of the edge of death indeed, because I refused it and insisted on a strong antibiotics like treatment, which succeeded. So, unless your pet is really doomed, I strongly suggest to refuse automatic euthanasia and insist on a treament instead so as to leave it a chance. During the evening, she started to not be able to breathe, I called after hours care (twice) to leave a message. No return call. I left message saying she was struggling.... No call ever returned. We have recently had two separate encounters (cow and dog) with this vet clinic and will avoid any future visits. If you're looking for routine shots that you can't get at your local Tractor Supply, or to put an animal down, they could be great but if you have anything needing a true medical diagnosis, I would pass this place by and opt for any other vet clinics in the area. After multiple unsuccessful visits for over a month with BVH, they finally referred us to the emergency diagnostic vet. (Austin Veterinary Diagnostic Hospital, is a further drive but found the underlying reason for the issue, their entire staff is caring and great and Dr. Ines Bougatef is amazing!) Turns out our dog had a stick lodged in his throat, not a snake bite like he was being "treated" for. Granted there is no guarantee in any medical practice (people or pets) but if time and money matter, I'd recommend another clinic for any animal you care about. read more

For over 10 years my pets have received loving care from the fine folks at BVH. I am finding it difficult to communicate just how perfect the service is. Over dozens of visits, I haven't had one moment where I could wish for anything better. Every single staff member I've met has been friendly, courteous, kind and seem to truly love all pets. Much of the same staff remains over many many years, that's such a great sign! We've done overnight intensive care, surgery, every kind of maintenance, resolved strange symptoms & behaviors - they're always giving perfect quality service. I suspect they've figured out how to pamper any pet in there because my corgi used to dislike vet visits and now he seems to like going in & he always leaves happy like he's been relaxing at a spa. One of my favorite things is having a vet that remembers every single thing about my dog's health conditions and truly gives every option & great tips to improve the quality of life. All the vets & techs I've seen here are so extremely knowledgeable - it's obvious to me that they've got so much more experience than the city vets I've seen. The pricing is always better as well. Do be advised, since covid lock downs made30% more pet owners, Bastrop Veterinary is busy, like crazy busy in the lobby sometimes. Happy are you if you sneak in when it's calm and quiet like it was a few years ago. You'll enjoy the art work in the many clean and comfortable encounter rooms. Very disappointed. My dog Bella has what looked like a serious eye infection this morning and a lump in her throat. I tried calling Bastrop Vet several times and all I heard was static so I decided to just drive over anyway. This was my 2nd time to this establishment. When I arrived, I was told that Saturday was for appointments only and did I have an appointment? I explained I did not but her eye looked very bad this morning so I decided to bring her in. In fairness to this clinic, they were slammed when I arrived. Wall to wall with dogs! And apparently all had pre-set appointments based on our conversation. Needless to say, I was then told that due to Bella's eye and throat symptoms, she would see if the Dr. could squeeze Bella in today. After a few minutes she returned to tell me that the Dr. agreed to fit Bella in however, I would have to pay the ER fee of $100 plus all other charges pertaining to today's visit! Sooooo, what I was really told was that if you want to "Man Up" and pay thru the nose, we will look at your dog! Otherwise, take your dog and leave. So much for compassion for animals. I had much rather they told me that a Dr visit today was not possible. Which is what they told me when I walked in. But when they came back and told me I could get in "if" I paid extra, it all boiled down to $ and not a concern for my dogs well being! NOT GOOD! NOT GOOD AT ALL FOR ME! I left and looked on yelp for the next closest Vet. They were 2 miles away. I walked in with Bella and walked out within one hour. Bella had Cherry Eye which was treated and given meds to carry home. My bill was $87. So as far as I'm concerned, I'll never go back here! They do not care about your pets well being. Only your $! Thats unfortunate... If my memory serves me correctly, I have been going to Bastrop Veterinary Hospital for over 20 years. Yesterday changed all that. This may sound insignificant to some but I am sure so many others can relate to what happened. Before leaving work at 5:00p.m., to head to Bastrop Vet to pick up my GSD Sadie, I made sure to use the restroom before I left. I knew the vet office you have to wait outside to be taken care of so I took care of business. Right before pulling up I felt an urgent emergency about to take place. Knowing the clinic is still locked up like ft. knox, I called the clinic, spoke to receptionist, Jessie. Let her know my situation was dire and was point blank told no, I needed to go to Buccee's. What? Jessie informed me that they tell all their clients to go to Buccee's that we are not allowed in the clinic. I let Jessie know politely that I was pulling up in Space 1, please bring me my invoice and my dog and I will never be back. A tech brings me my invoice and I ask who it was that I had spoke with on the phone and that is when I was told it was Jessie. I say to the tech that I wonder if Jessie let the owners know that they just lost a 20+ year cliient because of the unwillingness to show mercy & grace. A few minutes later, I'm guessing it is the office manager that comes out to speak to me. I did not get her name but she let me know that Covid is real, (thanks captain obvious) and that they have had an outbreak and they have proticals in place to protect not only us but to protect the staff. I explain to this women that at our office we see clients everyday, all day and we use the safety protocals set by the CDC, we wash our hands, we wear our masks and we sanitize our hands, pointing out the items I had sitting right beside me. After she gives me a run down on their protocals etc., and they tell everyone to go to Buccee's, then she claims that she "was going to offer me to come inside to use the restroom." No thank you ma'am. I am pretty embarrased and humiliated at this point. Please bring me Sadie and we will be on our way. I read my invoice and notice that the Heartworm test that I approved was not done. I asked them to keep my bill at around $125. Sadie needed de-skunked (that was the reason I brought her to the vet to begin with), she needed her rabies, heartworm and toenails clipped. Skip the wellness and do the heartworm and that would have kept my invoice within what I wanted to spend at that point. My bill was $99, which I was surprised until I saw no Heartworm. I get home and go to get Sadie out of car by putting leash on her and realize they did not give me her collar. I call, they are closed, but wait. . .I have an email from the clinic and it reads: Hi DeeDee- Attached you will find Sadie's medical records.  Please let us know if you would like them forwarded to a clinic of your choosing as well.  We are sorry that you had a negative experience, and we were unaware of an emergency.  We do hope that you are okay and are so sorry you experienced an emergency of any type.  Due to Covid-19, as you are aware, we are operating on a curbside only basis to protect both our clients and our staff.  As we are in the health profession, we are on the front lines providing health care services to our patients, despite an increased risk to our staff every day, and have to follow rules and guidelines to make it possible for us to continue to do so.  This is not a rule that is applied only to you, and unfortunately, Covid-19 has caused hardship for both BVH and our clients who we value and respect very much, but, we have to do the best we can to keep everyone safe in this pandemic that can potentially cause life threatening illness to many of us including members of our staff who may be at increased risk.  We understand these rules and regulations are frustrating and inconvenient - unfortunately, there just is not a perfect answer currently, and we are doing the best we can to meet client needs while keeping everyone safe and healthy.  Please see our Covid-19 update below for additional information.  This can be readily accessed on our website, and as always, we do have information posted in the parking lot as well.  We do encourage clients needing bathroom facilities, drinks, snacks, etc. to make a quick stop down the street at Buccee's while we work on your pet and are happy to bring your pet to you when you get back.  Thank you and have a blessed day. The vets and vet techs are great. The clinic manager, Janet, is an absolute nightmare. She's petty and vindictive. A couple examples: My dog was getting surgery and the vet tech told me that pickup was at 6, but as long as I came by 630 it was fine. I got stuck in traffic and called and told them my eta was 607. Janet told me that if I was after 6 I would be charged an overnight fee and they would not give my dog back until the next day. I arrived at 604. Got my dog back and they charged me a 25 dollar overnight fee anyways. There were still plenty of people on the parking lot. I had asked for the medications to be called into HEB, which I had done before because the meds at this vet are overpriced. I had never been charged to do this. When I picked my dog up, I found that they had charged me 20 dollars to call the meds in. When I asked about it, Janet got snippy and said that I should have been charged every time. I parked in the handicap spot once. I'm a disabled veteran and have handicap plates. Janet came outside and snapped at me that I didn't belong in the handicap spots. I missed an appointment once due to an emergency. I paid them the 65 they requested. I called last week to schedule an appointment and was told that the price was double the normal price, and I needed to pay ahead of time. I asked why, and they connected me to Janet, who said that due to me missing so many appointments I needed to pay ahead. I said well I've missed one and paid for it. I asked for a list of the appointments I apparently missed to be emailed to me and she said she was too busy. Great vets but the clinic manager is the epitome of power tripping mean girl who finds excuses to be petty and cruel. read more

They send a tech out to take your money that has the personality of a dead fish and can't even look at you or acknowledge you if you ask a question. And then when you do get some one that will speak to you they are like "oh well sucks to be you". I waited for 45 minutes to pick up my dog from a grooming appointment! I have been taking my Dutch Shepherd, Da-Go to Bastrop Vet Hospital since he was a new pup. He is 3 yrs old now. I had to start my dog on ApoQuel for his itching 3 months ago. this prescription will be needed to be ordered every month. Bastrop Vet Hospital does price match, which we did the first prescription, with the acquired email. My problem is, we have to send an email every month with a price match to get the price match on his meds, this price should be set for every month. so I dont have to send email proving my price match. This past week , my wife had problems with getting our price match price. all my wife was asking for was a month supply, which cost me 74.00 last month for 30 pills. The Vet employee brought out a prescription with 42 count and cost of 134.00 All four employees that came out to her car , all young women, had an attitude with her when she tried explaining to them with she wanted. If these girl dont want to walk out to peoples cars , "your customers "with a smile and a great attitude, then they need to stay in the office and away from customers. especially the young hispanic girl, Your Hospital is overpriced. and your employees are Rude. I will be looking into taking my Dog to another Vet, Maybe Crossroads, they are way cheaper and friendlier. TW read more

The one who has pet insurance, the one who makes her own dog food, the one who refers to her pugs as her babies so when I tell you how awesome Dr Burghardt and her staff are, I MEAN IT. I could write many paragraphs on my relationship with BVH but most recently my beloved baby developed diabetes. It's heart breaking to me but Dr B has managed it beautifully. Here's the deal, left our insulin out on the counter by total accident (has to be thrown away if not kept refrigerated). My pug is extremely dependent on this med. Normal turn around for medicine is 24-48hours. I freaked. However, they understood and moved all kinds of mountains to get me the medicine my baby needs. My emergency became their emergency. My baby has her meds, we will NEVER forget the insulin on the counter again and once again, BVH saved the day. Biggest thank you to all the staff that made this happen for us! read more

Too busy for your appointment. Waited 40 minutes after appointment time and they never saw my dog. Called and had to leave a message and they never call back. They insist you park outside, so you MUST have a car with air-conditioning. This seems stupid in 95-degree heat for any reason. Next you have to call and tell them what parking space you are in, and the cell phone reception is very poor in that area. Talked with person next to me and they were waiting 30 minutes to pick up their dog. Don't seem to offer good care for animals. They don't try to appear competent, and do not make you feel you can trust Bastrop Veterinary Hospital with anything. read more
