I was told by the man that answered the phone that they were booked up for Monday and Tuesday and I should take her to an emergency vet clinic. He said that the vet wasn't in yet and he would talk with her and call me back. It's been 24 hours and I have not heard from them. From reading other reviews, this seems to be a common thing. You can't count on this vet to see your dog when there is an emergency health issue and when she is an established patient. Take my advice. Go elsewhere. I was able to get an appointment on Monday afternoon at Essential Vet Care. They were wonderful and I highly recommend them. It turns out that my dog has a tumor either on her liver or her spleen and will be having exploratory surgery on Thursday.

No one should be punished for speaking out unless they are lying and why would I lie? This WONDERFUL vet clinic turned into a blackmail machine. MANY months ago I went in with my dog Karma (not knowing that Dr. Meyers was gone). Karma had horrible ear infections (again) and her "downstairs" was like bloody leather (AGAIN). I asked over and over to stop sending me home with my girl's ears full of medical "ear goop" and a lipstick-sized tube of "doggie neosporin." I then took her to Brykerwood's only to find that bacteria had eaten her eardrums and she would never hear again. Her entire body was infected with bacteria and she needed a medicated shampoo daily. As I shaved her I was disgusted with the white balls of strange bacteria attached to her skin and hair falling to the concrete. A week later she was like a puppy again. There is a reason I am updating and re-telling my story: I have a Great Dane that I took in for pre-op bloodwork necessary to put him under for surgery. His "visit" and flea/HW meds cost over $330. (They reimbursed me for $45 of that amount) About 9 days ago he (Odin) had a serious episode. I called Riverside Vet in desperation because bloat is deadly and he had all of the symptoms. Odin couldn't sit or lay down. His stomach was bigger than normal. His nose was dry and warm. Thomas answered. I begged them to see Odin. Thomas said they would call me right back to see when they could get him in. Thomas/they never did call me back. I had to turn to a emergency clinic. In a cosmic coincidence while tearfully waiting for that call I went to get the mail. There was a large vanilla envelope from Riverside Vet with a cover letter saying that "care was based on trust." And then, in very long and rambling paragraphs it said that I gave them a bad review in the past on Yelp and... "we have canceled all of your upcoming appts" (including Odin's surgery that I had to plan for 6 weeks in advance) and promising to reimburse me for Odin's bloodwork. All and all getting Odin seen at an emergency clinic cost me over $650 + $598 the very next day for a "follow-up" because I no longer had a vet. At least Odin is still alive. Karma is not.

Dr. Lassin has created a unicorn vet clinic, we have seen over half a dozen vets since we got our French bulldog, Brie, seven years ago and I can confidently say that every other vet pales in comparison to Roots. Brie has gone through so much with the Roots team and has been seen by Dr. Lassin, Dr. Sosa, and our favorite lady Dr. Jordan. We have always felt heard and seen by each one of them and the entire team has gone above and beyond to care for our girl through incessant allergies, an IVDD surgery recovery, ongoing UTIs, and more always offering holistic options when possible and weighing each and every scenario with us. Calling us back for updates (even after hours) and always being so patient with our feisty girl. There are no words that we can use to express our gratitude for all of the care and love this group of people have given to our fur baby over the past four years. Thank you is simply not enough, and if we ever find ourselves back in Austin, it won't even be a question of where we'll bring all of our future pets. We love y'all so much!

Ok, in all fairness I'm not a vet expert. I don't know what happens behind the scenes, what a…read moremedical exam costs, etc. A lot of time reviews are ignorant of the basics, then the establishment is unfairly put on blast for just covering their costs plus a little profit. So, I'll try to quantify my review as objectively as possible. I asked my friend kids that are both vet techs about where to go. Both of her girls said "don't go to Kyle, they're expensive". I thought "bah... it can't be that bad". More on that later. I called Firehouse to bring my cat in as he ate my medical bracelet & recently got fleas. They got me in within two days. Parking is easy and the place is extremely clean. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable while taking some basic info. Taking my cat to one of the rooms, he was attended to quickly and the assistant and Vet were typical pet lovers; showing affection for my animal and wanting to understanding the issue. I really appreciated the attention to detail. They did a thorough exam and also said he didn't need an X-ray since he had been eating and going to the bathroom, so a penny pinched there. They even applied the first round of flea drips to my cats neck. Now comes to cost. For a 6 month supply of flea ointment and the exam was $300. I was thinking that was pretty darn high for 10 mins of petting my beautiful cat! What was more interesting as when I got to the front to check out, I was offered a "free" bottle of wine (red or white for those interested). Being a bit of a wine connoisseur I asked if they could knock of $40 and keep the wine. They said, no it's just a gift for first time visits. So, in summary from my brief and ignorant visit, Firehouse is a caring, clean, and knowledge veterinarian clinic who will attend to your pet quickly. I can't speak on boarding animals, surgeries, etc but I can say the price is a little high for the most basic of services. Would I recommend them? Yes if you have the money however perhaps look else where if costs are a factor.

Disappointed by the constant upselling and pressure... this place is an expensive money grab…read more unfortunately, our experiences have become increasingly frustrating. Almost every time we come in, we leave feeling pressured into additional tests, medications, procedures, or services we did not originally come in for. It increasingly feels more like a sales process than a veterinary experience focused on our pets' needs. We are routinely presented with one thing after another, and the way these recommendations are communicated can make you feel guilty or irresponsible for questioning whether everything is actually necessary. Almost every visit ends up costing hundreds more than we anticipated. We also seem to have a different doctor almost every time, making it difficult to have any continuity of care. We were even told we needed to see a pet nutritionist if we planned to feed our dogs anything other than kibble after I explained that we feed them a raw food diet. Recently, We originally came in because we wanted our dog's teeth cleaned and his nails trimmed. They had a "deal" going on, but once you discuss all of the required steps and additional charges, it hardly feels like a deal. In fact, the total would have cost us more than what I had been quoted by other facilities. We were told blood work was required beforehand, so we came in for that. They were unable to complete what we needed because our dog would not cooperate without sedation. We were told to go home, give him multiple medications to make him loopy, and bring him back to try again--while being charged for the medications and that visit. I specifically explained that we had already tried this approach before and it had not worked. I asked why we couldn't simply proceed with sedation since we already knew the medication protocol wasn't effective for him. I was told it was "protocol," so we followed their instructions. We went home, gave him the medications, brought him back--and, exactly as I expected, it didn't work. This had actually been attempted before as well, and we were charged for the "attempt" plus another visit fee. We were then told to try an even higher dose and additional medications and come back again. At that point, I declined. I wasn't willing to spend my entire week making repeated trips to the vet, especially when I had already told them this approach didn't work, while continuing to accumulate more fees. Eventually, they agreed to sedation so they could complete the blood work and nail trim. Then came the blood work. I received a very lengthy email explaining everything they found "alarming" and recommending additional testing and next steps. There was no cost estimate for the recommended testing, and the actual blood work results weren't even attached. I had to specifically request them, and even then I had to follow up days later before finally receiving my own dog's results. For an establishment that is so persistent about getting you to do more and calling repeatedly, they certainly weren't in much of a hurry to send me something I had specifically requested--my dog's medical records. I ultimately shared the blood work with several veterinarian friends for another perspective. They were not particularly concerned by the results and felt the recommendations being made were much more aggressive than what they would have recommended based on the results. They also felt there were other steps that could be taken before proceeding with the more extreme recommendations being suggested. That experience unfortunately confirmed something I have felt for a long time: I no longer feel confident that recommendations are being made with my pet's best interest as the primary consideration. I constantly feel pressured to do more, test more, medicate more--and ultimately spend more. The communication during this visit was also excessive. The doctor called me back-to-back-to-back when I didn't answer the first call. I understand wanting to reach a client, but repeatedly calling someone who simply isn't available felt excessive and unprofessional. On our first day meeting this doctor, he immediately walked in and said, "Hi, I know you denied XYZ vaccines today. I want to educate you," and proceeded to explain why I needed to do them. I had to explain that we were there for something else and that those were things we could address in a couple of months. Again, it felt like the focus was on adding services rather than simply addressing why we were there. I don't have an issue with a veterinarian recommending additional testing when it is genuinely warranted. What I have an issue with is feeling pressured into a growing list of services and made to feel irresponsible for questioning them. As a pet owner, I should be able to ask questions, understand why something is being recommended, know what it will cost, and receive my pet's results without having to repeatedly ask for them.
