a parking lot at night

It's near midnight, your hungry and danced up a healthy appetite from attending a great concert or club. You maybe a little over served on top of it. Everything seems to be closed, so where do you go? Absolutely the Waffle House! Now I normally go to other Waffle House restaurants for the free entertainment that goes along with enjoying breakfast or diner past bed time, however this one in Hoover in special. It's right off 31 and is a secret location off the Public's parking lot. I feel like I am going to a secret hidden speak. If you are really drunk, finding the entrance maybe difficult. Mild to moderate drunk, it's possible with good gps. Severely drunk, gooood luck! Surprisingly this Waffle House is always busy. Why?....because it's the best freaking Waffle House on the planet. Anyone not giving this Waffle House five stars must have been so intoxicated they tried to eat the menus. Service is far superior than any other of the sophisticated breakfast places piping up around town. Workers are friendly, intelligent and sober! My wife and I had delicious eggs, ham, grits, toast and waffles super special. Everything was super clean and the coffee was delicious. Ambiance was a little more sophisticated than most Waffle Houses, but you still could show up after prom and they would still let you in. I am ratting this WH with five star plus!

a waffle on a plate with syrup

The kindest waitress served us last night and I couldn't decide what type of waffle and she made me a waffle with all 4 flavors! She went out of her way late at night and she was so sweet, not a lot of people do this at waffle house! This place deserves 5 stars!

These are the employees that are at work but they refuse to serve me because they are "closed"

Came at 3:00 am restaurant is supposed to be 24 hours I see employees standing outside at their cars yet they say that they are closed so who's lying here?????

Because of the intense Alabama heat, we chose to sit inside, though they have a really nice screened-in patio available. The restaurant is intimate but well laid out, featuring a couple of distinct dining areas and a bar. Since it was our first time, our server, Daniella, recommended the candied bacon bombs to start. They came with a side of cheese curds, and both were absolutely delicious. Even as small as the curds were, they had a perfect cheese pull! For our mains, I ordered the cowboy burger with an added egg and a side of sweet potato fries, while my son chose the shrimp and grits. My burger was incredible, a solid 9.5 out of 10. My son rated his shrimp and grits a 7, though he has a lot of experience with that dish to compare it to. Daniella provided fantastic service, checking in at just the right times without hovering. I later realized I forgot to ask if they do anything special for birthdays, but honestly, my son was probably glad I forgot! Overall, it was a great meal, excellent service, and a very cool environment.

Thankfully free parking was available. I walked in at the perfect time, just as the breakfast grill was shutting down and the lunch grill was heating up. I was 5 minutes pass breakfast, as told by the waitress. She was so kind and told me that she would ask, if they (he) could prepare a breakfast for me. The answer was yes, but no grits. Oh well, let's try the omelette and hash brows. I'm really not into hash browns but these were delicious! Crispy and perfectly round. The omelette was also good and fluffy. The coffee was a good robust cup of coffee. This is a real old school diner. Counter seats with a few booths to the side. No frills here. Decent diner food with great friendly service. By the time I finished my breakfast, the lunch crowd was starting to come in for a seat at the counter and booths. I heard someone say, this is the best Philly cheesesteak in the area. Anyways, this was a pleasant place to have a good simple meal with some awesome service. The only reason I'm not giving 5* is because of not being able to get the grits, which was my fault for not getting there a little sooner. I will definitely come back.

Let me start with the good for my Metro Diner pick up order (placed one online and one through…read moreDoorDash): Order was ready on time The hostess in the bright green shirt at the front was very friendly and assisted me quickly Chicken tenders, creole mustard, green beans and fries were the star of the show today. I haven't had their chicken tenders before, but now realize I prefer it over the standard fried chicken solely because the flavor profile is better (more seasoned). I would order this again. Salad for my steak tips was as expected. I also redeemed a birthday reward for the chocolate cake. The bite I took was pretty good and it is easily a sharable portion size. Now for the not so good... My order through metro diners website consisted of steak tips, mash&gravy, garden salad with ranch. I personally would not order this again. Issue: The steak was chewy, flavor was bland and portion size seemed small for the value. My DoorDash order consisted of 1. Bissell breakfast with pancakes, scrambled eggs, cheese grits, bacon and a biscuit. 2. Small sausage gravy side 3. Chicken tenders plate with creole mustard, green beans and French fries. Issue: I quickly glanced through the see through lid of the boxes and noticed toast instead of a biscuit and no container that would have had the cheese grits. Went inside to notify the team and expo of missing items (also brought the bag back in). The expo called for these missing items from the kitchen. The cook glanced and then asked if he had a ticket for that? I managed restaurants for years so I get it when the kitchen asks this, however, the ticket was the one you made incorrectly and the expo did not check for correctness. The expo also stated "it is for a DoorDash order that she said is wrong". I'm happy this was a personal order because I got to see firsthand how it appears DD order issues are dismissed since they seemed to assume I was a driver. At least that is how the short exchange presented. They weren't rude it was the tone and lack of apology for my missing items. Mistakes happen. How you respond to and handle them matters. Fast forward - I get home and realize they must have simply switched my order with someone else's. There were hash browns with cheese and diced tomatoes and scrambled eggs with cheese. Was not my order and could not eat this order. The pancakes were just okay. Tried the sausage gravy with the biscuit. Not something I would get again but this part isn't a reflection of Metro Diner. Ordered this just to try it since many rave about this southern combo. Let's just say there will be more for everyone else to enjoy.

I have driven past Archie's countless times over the past decades (going back to when it was Golden…read moreRule), but I finally got to eat there for the first time! You walk in and the aroma of smoking meat surrounds you. The open kitchen with the BBQ pit in the back is surrounded by booths and tables, creating a warm and casual setting that is perfect for a family meal. The staff were universally friendly, not just our waitress but all the other servers and kitchen staff. They greeted us all with smiles and interacted kindly with my baby and toddler. The food was hearty and homey, with generous portions. We enjoyed a burger, pulled pork sandwiches, a corn dog, fries, baked beans, and a fried peach pie with vanilla ice cream. The burger was cooked fresh and perfectly grilled. The pulled pork was smoky and tender, but the sauce was a little more vinegary than I prefer. The fries were perfectly crisp and golden. My kiddo gave a huge thumbs up for his corn dog and the beans were a hit with the baby. The peach pie tasted like something my grandma would have made, warm and sweet and comforting. And if you like sweet tea so sweet you get cavities just looking at it, Archie's is the place for you (I had to do half and half myself).

About three minutes later, a couple came in and sat at another table, and they were waited on before either myself or the gentleman. I sat there as the staff behind the counter stared at me with disgusting looks. The waitress brought the older gentleman a drink without even asking for his order -- I'm assuming he was a regular and they knew what he wanted. Finally, after about six or seven minutes, a waitress came over and asked if I was waiting for someone. I told her no. She then asked if I could move to the counter and sit there. I told her I didn't want to move to the counter -- there was only one seat against a wall-type divider, and the space was about three feet wide. The older gentleman was not asked to move, and there was another older gentleman sitting by himself in a booth. Why was I being asked to move? I told the waitress that I would just leave, and she sarcastically said, "Well, you have a good night then." I did have a choice word to say to her as I was leaving. I really wanted to try Archie's, but I guess being young and dining alone is not welcomed here. A place like this deserves to go out of business.
