He was warm, attentive, personable, and incredibly thoughtful without ever hovering. He paid attention. He anticipated what we needed. He made us feel genuinely welcome rather than simply waited on, and there is such a difference between the two. Everything felt effortless on our end, which usually means someone is working very intentionally on theirs. What impressed me most was his kindness. It didn't feel rehearsed or like "customer-service nice." He seemed genuinely interested in making sure we were taken care of and having a good experience. That kind of warmth and conscientiousness is something I notice immediately, especially when someone manages to be both personable and extremely competent. Suddenly, our brunch mood dissipated, and we felt our welcome had quickly chilled. We apologized for putting anyone in a bad mood and got up and walked out the door. Of course, they apologized as well, but the deed had been done. I do not want anyone in the kitchen that is angry with me. The kicker is that there is another brunch spot nearer home than this one.
