This review is LONG overdue…read more After looking online and at a couple of different 'big box' type jewelry stores for an engagement ring and just not finding what we wanted, we decided we wanted to go the route of having a custom ring made, and so we ended up at Holtzmann's. Pam and Pat Holtzmann are the most phenomenal folks around. When you're in their store, you feel like family. They are super friendly, and made you feel comfortable from the get-go. They are both super patient, and they really take the time to educate you on different stones, and different aspects of design to help make sure that you're creating a jewelry piece that will last a lifetime with proper care. We ended up having my engagement ring and my husband's wedding ring made by them, and then after having my husbands wedding ring made, I ended up wanting to make a more feminine, mini-version of his ring to be able to wear myself as well, and they helped us make that too. The quality of the jewelry pieces we received is outstanding, and working with Pam and Pat was the same. We valued getting to work with them so closely on pieces we plan to wear a lifetime! Although we had rings made, Holtzmann's specializes in all types of custom jewelry. We happened to pop into the store at the tail end of another couple leaving who had the most beautiful custom bracelet made, and at another visit saw someone picking up a necklace that they had redesigned with stones from a different necklace they no longer wore anymore. All of those jewelry pieces were amazing too. 10/10 recommend for whatever your jewelry needs are!!

I had an overall positive experience with Gage, but would want to warn customers of a few things…read morebefore going there. The appointments are very quick, no frills, and I had to do all of my own research. We left my second appointment with little to no information (didn't know my ring size, what ratio was, ideal clarity and color for the cut we chose, etc.), and were just told to select a stone and purchase the ring on their website. Unfortunately, my ring was also posted on their social media just days after my fiancé picked it up. During the checkout process, they have an option to add a "TikTok Video" when making the final purchase, which we deliberately did not add because my fiancé did not want the ring to be posted before he proposed. They also never asked him if they could post the ring. Based on our friends experiences with other jewelers, we thought it was reasonable to assume an engagement jeweler would wait to post until after the proposal. They posted without asking, and of course, our friends and I saw it on their socials. We definitely felt like "just a number" when it came to those parts of the process. Besides that, everything was great. During the design process, Frankie was very responsive and helpful, and the ring turned out beautifully. I love how customizable their rings are, and the customer service after we'd selected a diamond was great. I am definitely happy with the outcome, but would just make sure my friends have done their own independent research ahead of their appointment, and are very clear with Gage about social media expectations ahead of time.

However, I was unable to find the exact setting that I wanted for an oval diamond. We found out about Imperial Jewelry Company through a family member and reached out to Terry. I verbalized with Terry the specifications I had for my ring. All I told him was that I wanted a platinum skinny half pave band set for an oval diamond we had already selected. It sounds simple enough, but this was difficult to find! Just days later, he updated us that he already produced a mold of the setting that had the specifications of my gem. Then, I was completely caught off guard because just days after he sent us a picture of the mold, the entire ring was completed and on my finger. When I received the ring, I was honestly blown away - it was exactly what I wanted. The most impressive part of this entire experience is Terry's ability to understand his clients' needs. I didn't even show him a picture of what I wanted, but just described to him what I wanted. I couldn't believe he knew the exact thickness of the band I wanted just based off of the description of "skinny," and letting him know I had slim fingers (lol). He has an incredible breadth of knowledge and experience that allows him to correctly interpret even your most vague requests! We were so pleased with our experience with Terry that we've also asked him to custom make our wedding bands too! I would highly recommend Terry for all your custom jewelry needs.

Most "custom" jewelers in the big markets (LA, Chicago, NYC) didn't make the cut (they mostly CAD the design, contract with jewelers who do benchwork, and don't have many finished pieces on display). I felt fully confident that Lester Lampert (LL) could make, change, modify, and fix anything easily if needed - BEAUTIFUL, UNIQUE ART PIECES After being disappointed in the lack of display pieces at custom jewelers, we went to all the big box stores on Michigan Ave and Oak St. They were so boring and all looked the same. LL is whimsical, artistic, and very Alice-in-Wonderland. If you're looking for something different, this is your place - LOW PRESSURE SALES This is NOT the place that pressures you towards any sale, ring, direction, etc. They DO NOT upsell. I asked multiple times if I should get a bigger diamond, and everyone told me "you could, but this size suits you well" - NO NICKEL AND DIMING Free steam cleanings, resizings, small diamond replacement! We wanted to buy local for the relationship and service. It's typical that jewelers offer free cleanings, but many nickel and dime you on resizings and small diamond replacements. Both are free here - ONLY NATURAL DIAMONDS / NO LAB If you care about this, it's a huge plus (I let my s/o pick, and he only wanted natural). LL does not work with lab at all. They test every piece that comes in, even for a cleaning. If it's lab, they don't touch or clean it. LL strongly stands behind natural diamonds, and this is also quality control for their customers, who never have to worry that their diamonds could be "swapped out" for inferior quality - REASONABLE PRICING The pricing is actually extremely reasonable, if you follow the market. It's cheaper than the "custom jewelers" in the Diamond District, who have to contract with/pay the actual bench jewelers, diamonds, etc - SAFETY It feels very secure. If you consider fine jewelry to be treasures rather than just purchases, then this is the jeweler for you. I will miss the Oak St. store as it was a fixture along the Gold Coast along with Marilyn Miglin's salon and the IKAT boutique, but I am happy to see that the shop has moved to 7 E. Huron. A dear friend of mine still owns the original gold watch he bought for himself in the early 70's when his band finally made it nationwide, and it still has the original engraving on it. It was just so precious that he still wears it after all these years and it can still light up his eyes like a 21 year old. You can window shop at Tifffany, but with the personalized and attention-to-detail service at Lester Lampert, why not go local? It's the best investment you will ever make.

Despite not offering it as a service, Angie helped me laser cut and set a picture of him into the heart-shaped locket, only charging me a small fee. I really appreciated her generosity and knew I would return to her shop. About a year ago, I decided it was time to purchase a new gold chain for a pair of cloisonné pendants that belonged to my grandmother. Angie makes her own chains, and she was so patient while I looked at the various patterns and tried on different lengths. I originally planned on buying a single chain to share, but after reviewing my options I decided to purchase two of different pattern and length. The cloisonnés vary in color, shape, and size, and the chains we chose reflected their differences. Angie even added my grandmother's birth stone (peridot) to the clasp of each one! To use her words, these necklaces are now truly "heirloom quality" that I hope to pass down to my future children. Finally, this past fall. My fiancé worked with Angie to create a custom engagement ring. It has the Art Deco style that I love, and it's absolutely perfect. The ring is everything I wanted, and I have received so many compliments. The fact that Angie designed it makes it all the more special to me. Angie is kind, patient, and honest - every quality you would want in a jeweler. Her cozy little shop is welcoming, and everything is artfully arranged. You can feel Angie's passion in her craftsmanship, dedication to quality, and ability to make any project - from a gold chain to an engagement ring - incredibly unique and personal.
