You may be wondering what an art manager does. I did! Gregg Lane works with you to determine the type of artwork that will work in your house. They even bring multiple options to your home so you can actually view and live with them for a few days. Amazing! I immediately took a liking to Lisa Gregg and Kate Lane. They came over to see my house and I loved their ideas of where they could put some of our current artwork (of course all in places I hadn't thought of). I asked them to start by looking for a painting for our living room. I gave them my budget, which I'm guessing is less than most of their clients, but they seem happy working at varying budgets. They also mentioned to me they like the challenge of finding "undiscovered" artists (aka: more affordable :)). After getting a feeling for the type of artwork my husband and I liked they sent along (first via email) a bunch of options for the living room. My husband and I picked our favorite...and Lisa showed up a few days later with an installer by the name of James and the painting. For a few days my house was basically an art gallery because she also brought along a few other paintings that she wanted me to see in the space as well. I'm so glad she did because I ended up going with a different painting after living with a few of them for a few days. The painting is absolutely perfect and completes our living room. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to find such a perfect piece if we had gone art shopping on our own & it sure would have taken a lot longer. I was able to find Prints Unlimited and Jill was able to narrow down my selection like a puzzle sorting out different color mattes and frames. Jill was able to quote me a price minus a check-in discount (under $600) which made this final product come to life. The final product was mention to take 3 weeks but after 2 weeks, I got the call to come pick the print up. I am glad Prints Unlimited made this process easy and the price was very affordable. I signed up for a sugar skull decorating class for Día de los Muertos (one of the Yelp Virtual…read moreEvents I love so much!). But I've never decorated these, and didn't know where to get them. Somehow i got a tip that a local shop in one of the neighborhoods was selling them, and they were so much better than the kit that was suggested from Target. These were already made, so no room for error if I made them myself. These hold up beautifully, and we learned in the YVE that often people hold onto the ones they decorate for years. I'm so glad I didn't toss the blister packaging that these came in, because I was able to place them back in the packages for next year, when I may create an ofredna. I bought a sugar skull mold when I picked these up at Mestiza, because I thought maybe I'd try making the skulls myself next year. But these were larger than the mold I bought and even then I sometimes struggled to decorate them. I'm not sure I'd not get frustrated trying to make the skulls and then they might be too small, so I will probably just buy them if I decide I want to make them again. And I'm so happy to be able to support at least one (Mosaico) and possibly a second (Mestiza) locally-, women-, Latinx-owned businesses. Mosaico Arte Chicago sometimes hosts workshops and I'd love to take one once the pandemic has ended. I really love mosaics--when I see them in public spaces they always catch my eye and I'm enchanted--so I'd especially love to take a class to learn how to do this. Looking forward to the chance.
