I was first to place bids on two items a few hours before the start of the auction. I couldn't "attend" the on-line, live auction, so I made two absentee $100 maximum bids on the items. When I checked later, I found that my bids did not win; rather, the items were sold to someone else for $100 each?! Apparently, no one bid higher than me, and I was first to bid, so why didn't I win? We sold items with this company and were happy with the sale but dealing with Victoria was painful. When you pay 40% commission to sell your items you expect to be able to contact your contact person. In our case this was Victoria. For the items that made it to auction we could not originally get hold of her to discuss. It turned out that she was texting our land line. We did get that sorted out, happily, and the sale went well. That was kind of funny. What was frustrating was trying to get hold of her to schedule bringing in more items for auction and to pick up the one lot that did not sell. My texts went unanswered and there was no one else to help me. Took 3 weeks before we finally connected and she told me to tell Sue to let my husband stop by to pick up the lot. Victoria is a nice person when you talk to her but she's hard to pin down. To me customer service is key to a successful business. I just felt it was lacking a bit here so I gave them a C+. I feel that this is a fair review from what I experienced. Your experience may be better than mine. read more

I'm incredibly disappointed with this business. I brought my family heirlooms to be evaluated and I feel like I was rushed through the process. I was given vague ranges of what they might be worth, although they seemed to talk up how much they 'possibly' could be worth. They made me feel like they had my best interests in mind and I trusted them. Their commission is high at 30% in the contract but after hearing how much they though they could bring in and how they were "so connected" to many online auctions I didn't really think it was an issue. I just received my check and I ended up paying 40% in commission. I believe some of my items were auctioned well under what they were worth. I had 2 paintings that sold for only $125 and since their minimum commission is $100 per piece I netted $25. I would have rather given them to Goodwill and have had someone find a "treasure". If you just want to "dump" your treasures somewhere and don't care what you end up getting then this is your place. Otherwise, seek out another place who really cares as much about your belongings as you do. read more

After many years of collecting antiques this was my first opportunity to attend a live auction and I had so much fun. First of all everyone on staff was very nice and professional. Second, they make you feel comfortable by offering refreshments and snacks and have very clean facilities. Third, they are reasonable with the buyers premiums. They also helped me get things to my car (I have a broken arm). If you have the time to spare there are some great deals with some lots selling for as little as $5.00. Even some nice furniture sold for less than $20.00. This is a very well run business and a lot of fun for someone like me. Just an FYI it takes about 1 hour to go through 100 lots so if you are only coming to bid on 1 item you may not have to get there at the start. read more

Went to my first auction here yesterday and all I can say is what a blast!!!! This place is top notch all around. From the moment I walked in and picked up my number I knew I was going to have a great time! Susan was super friendly and helpful explaining to me that I will see her or Katie to check out and that if I bought bigger items I had a week to pick them up. I also met another gentleman that gave me a little more insight on a couple of the furniture pieces I was interested in. I was soooooooo happy I ended up winning a Berkey and Gay dresser that I had my eye on!!!! I was shocked when they said they would help me get it into my truck. Leonard Auction charged a 21% online buyer's premium but did not provide service to the online buyer after the sale. On the back end, Leonard Auction attempted to charge more than double the actual shipping cost to ship the item, would not pack the item, and would not accept a shipping label from our business. What are you charging 21% for if you won't support the customer after your sale? When I corresponded with them, they played dumb like they didn't recognize they were trying to gouge me. In short, I would avoid them if you are an online bidder. Leonard Auction is clearly greedy and without ethics. ---- John Leonard has responded to my review with lies. The weight of the package was quoted at 17 lbs and is not an oversized package. That is NOT "heavy." The dimensions estimate out total at 14 x 12 x 10 box with appropriate padding, so it was not oversized. I ship all day long and I know what appropriate shipping costs are. They tried to charge $50+ in shipping. Our FedEx rate quote was $18.50. I was happy to pay a reasonable shipping charge, but Leonard Auction wanted to gouge us. Rather than fix the problem by charging reasonable shipping charges, they acted like my request was confusing. Further, the Proxibid fee is not the 21% fee that Leonard Auction charged on this auction referenced below. Proxibid charges 2% fee to the auction seller, so 19% is additional fees being charged by Leonard Auction for dealing with the online buyer that they pocket. Unfortunately, Leonard Auction wants all that money without actually providing appropriate service to the online buyer. I was not rude to his staff. It was more the other way around. I politely asked if there was a way we could resolve this without me being overcharged for shipping and they had no option. My only option was to pay them the $57 in buyer's premium and pay them $50 in shipping, pay the $57 in buyer's premium and pay a shipping company to pick it up, pack it and ship it, or cancel my order. I offered that they could charge a more reasonable and accurate shipping charge and they refused. I asked why they are charging the buyer's premium if they aren't willing to support an online buyer appropriately and she an inadequate response. I asked what would happen if we just canceled the order, and they agreed that was best. Susan, the woman I spoke with, acted like what I was requesting was confusing. I would think shipping should be a pretty normal thing for an auction house, yet she repeatedly interrupted me and raised her voice, and I advised I did not want to argue with her. If we couldn't reach a resolution together, then we could just choose not to work with each other. She agreed and said she was unwilling to charge a reasonable shipping charge, so we cancelled the order. John Leonard has also left a retaliatory review on our business, rather than trying to resolve the issue directly and fairly, which further shows this company's ethics are below average. Rather than respond to this review by contacting me to work it out, he decides to fight back with lies. read more

We had a family member pass away suddenly in the Chicago area. She had lived in her home for 60 years and had accumulated lots of nice things. We live out of town and had a very limited time frame to remove the items from her home. I searched online for auction companies in the area and ran across this company. I called and spoke with Sue who was very helpful and explained how the process would go if we had things that could be auctioned. John rearranged his schedule to meet with us when we were in town and was quickly able to identify the items in the home that would be worth selling (I was actually very impressed with his knowledge of antiques, art, glassware, etc.). He had a team come over quickly and collect and pack everything for auction. He was very professional and was in constant communication with us during the entire process. We were very surprised by the sum that the items fetched at auction, and we received payment promptly. The commission rate was also very fair and John did his best to keep it as low as possible. I would highly recommend this company to anyone who is dealing with a similar situation and doesn't know what to do. They really came to our rescue during a very bad time. read more

This was my first experience consigning to an auction house and it was excellent. When we arrived, we were greeted by a woman (I think Ann). She was very friendly, knowledgeable, and explained the entire process in detail. I've been going to auctions for 15 years and Leonard Auction house really seems to know their stuff. in order to bid on one of their items, as a first time bidder, you have to provide a letter of referral or copy of an invoice of a previous purchase on liveAuctioneers or your bid is declined. this is not sotheby's. more importantly, if this is their policy then they should post it up front, my bid was accepted then the next day i received a notice that it was declined. i will find an auction gallery to buy from without such pretensions. read more
