We ordered: Garlic edamame, cheese corn, cucumbers, vegetable spring rolls, fried pork gyoza dumplings, toro beef, angus beef rib, New York steak, pork belly, shishito peppers, and a few other meat options that I can't remember from the AYCE menu. A la cart we ordered the garlic rice. From the Adventures in Niku menu we got the $2.50 Kirin drafts. My personal favorites were the Angus Beef Rib, garlic edamame, garlic fried rice, and lots and lots of s'mores! We were very impressed with our server because she was very present and not on autopilot. For example, when we put in our first order we ordered the garlic fried rice and a two steamed white rices. I believe when a different employee dropped off our meats, she said she was going to get the white rice but never came back. My partner and I didn't think anything of it because the garlic fried rice was so large, and we can always order more steamed rice if we really needed it. About halfway into our meal, our server looks at our food and goes "didn't you order 2 steamed rices in addition to the garlic fried rice?!" I said yes and she immediately went to go get it. It was really nice to see that she wasn't just putting orders in as she heard them, but she was actually fully present and listening to what the order was and then doing mental checks to see if we had received everything. She was fantastic! In addition to our server, I noticed that there were bussers who would walk around looking for empty plates to remove. After we had finished most of our meal and paid our bill, some members of our party, including my brothers, were still enjoying their sake and finishing their drinks. To our surprise, a staff member approached us and asked us to leave the restaurant. While I understand that it was a busy evening and that there may have been other customers waiting for tables, I found it inappropriate and unprofessional to be asked to leave when we were still consuming items we had legitimately purchased. We did not order from an all-you-can-eat menu, which typically has a clearly stated time limit. As paying customers dining from the regular menu, we reasonably expected to be allowed to finish our food and beverages without feeling rushed or pressured to leave. What was most disappointing was the manner in which the situation was handled. Hospitality should include treating guests with courtesy and respect, regardless of how busy the restaurant may be. Terrible Service, Absent Management, and Absolutely No Attention to Customers…read more Our experience at Wakano Restaurant at the Valencia Mall today was incredibly disappointing. If I could give zero stars, I would. From the moment we were seated, the service was practically nonexistent. Our waitress was nowhere to be found for most of our visit. We were rarely, if ever, checked on, weren't provided with the proper utensils, and couldn't get assistance when we actually needed it. We shouldn't have to struggle to get basic service at a restaurant. What made this experience particularly frustrating was that we had our four-year-old son with us, who had completely fallen asleep on our shoulders. We were exhausted, ready to leave, and simply needed someone to bring us our bill so we could check out and get our sleeping child home. Even that seemingly simple request turned into an unnecessarily long ordeal. Getting the bill and finally leaving took far longer than it should have. But here's what really stood out: the complete lack of management involvement. If your staff is overwhelmed, that is precisely when management needs to step up, help the team, check on customers, and make sure basic service isn't falling apart. Instead, there was no meaningful intervention, no effort to assist, and no apparent concern about the experience customers were having. Management isn't just a title you hold while your customers are left waiting. You're responsible for making sure the restaurant operates properly. And somehow, the experience managed to get even worse on the way out. As I was leaving, I had my hands full, with my four-year-old son asleep over my shoulder and another item in my other hand. There were two people at the front. Not one of them offered a simple goodbye, thanked us for visiting, wished us a good evening, or even held the door open. I literally had to use my shoulder to push the door open myself while carrying my sleeping child. This wasn't about expecting VIP treatment or demanding anything unreasonable. We expected the bare minimum: attentive service, the proper utensils, timely assistance, a reasonably prompt checkout, and basic human courtesy. Somehow, Wakano failed on every single one of those expectations. I strongly recommend that anyone considering dining here think twice. More importantly, I hope upper management takes a serious look at how this location is being operated. The lack of service, leadership, and basic hospitality was astounding. A restaurant can recover from a busy night, but it cannot build a loyal customer base when both its service and management appear completely disengaged.
