Lines out the door at 8:45 on a Sunday made me delay my breakfast here until Monday. The sign on the door says "where the locals eat", and that was certainly true during my visit. I was torn between ordering the huevos rancheros and the breakfast burrito smothered in green chili. There are two options: a vegetarian, and pork option -- the pork green chili was amazing. I ordered the burrito, and it was outstanding. It is large -- I should probably skip lunch today. The service was friendly and efficient. I hope to make it back to Gunnison some summer, and will certainly come back to the W Cafe! read more

Typical cafe style food, with a slight lean towards being a TOUCH more upscale. The food was good, if a bit over-priced. But, pretty much everything I've seen in Gunnison seems priced like this. So, it doesn't seem out of line with the competition. Would I go back? Probably, at some point. I would likely give some other places a try, too, though, having seen what W Cafe has to offer. :) read more

Food was okay but definitely not worth the price. Be careful when ordering substitutions. They are not included and very expensive. Our waiter Charles was very slow and didn't seem to care that we were there. We asked for our omelets to be cooked soft and they were not. When we asked Charles about it, he said he told the cook and then just walked away without offering to fix it. It took FOREVER to get our check. Breakfast took WAY longer than it should have. So first off as many reviews cover, this is a breakfast place. The awards on the wall prove that out as well. We decided to try this place out for lunch after a morning of snowmobiling. We did arrive a little bit later around 1:20 and about half the tables were available. Great local place with a hometown feel. Our service was prompt. Lots of great menu items - hard for us all to make a selection. We ordered both sandwiches and salads. The chef salad and Mushroom Swiss burgers got 5 stars while the BLT and the Tuna salad sandwiches only got threes. The ladies did complain about the fries being frozen and not fresh cut but in the end, few fries remained on the plate. ? My burger was great however just slightly overcooked from what I had ordered. The beef is raised locally and patties formed by hand. What also amazed me was the freshness of the fruit I had instead of fries. Not sure how they pull this off in an obscure location in Colorado. Located right on the main strip of Gunnison, its also nice to walk around some of the local shops. I think our total bill was $40. Great hometown diner feel. Enjoy. read more

Very slow and poor service. Couple that came in after us were waited on and served before we were waited on. Sausage patty over cooked and dry, hash browns under cooked and toast delivered 3/4 through the meal. Ordered eggs over-medium but received barely over-easy. 1st time writing a review. Chose this place because at 7:30am it was already full of people. And it was the best decision of the day. Our server Micheala is THE BEST. Sweet, knowledgeable and efficient. And the food... to die for. We chose the stuffed hashbrowns and porkloin with eggs. Added their signature biscuits and my mouth is watering just writing this. Down the street, the wait was 20 min on a Sunday morning about 1030 but here we were able to sit down immediately! The staff is all friendly and vibes are low key. Good range of ages, family friendly and intimate in size. My husband ordered the 2 eggs with pork chops and house fries (breakfast potatoes) and just about lost his mind with the pork. He raved about them. He ordered the eggs over medium and they came over easy but he didn't mind. He also got a cup of green chile that was the most underwhelming part of the whole breakfast. I ordered 2 scrambled eggs with hash browns and English muffin. All of that was good and what I was expecting. The blueberry pancake was DELICIOUS. The blueberries were plentiful and large. Every bite filled with that delicious goodness! My winner was the pancake, my husband's was the pork. Oh and they are ON TOP of refilling coffee, water, etc. Thanks for that! Very pleased! read more

A great local diner to have breakfast or brunch. I had the smothered pork green chili burrito and black coffee. It was very good. One of the best I've had. Huge and chunky. Order it with extra cheese and green chili. Quick and friendly service. Full of local characters. Looks like it's been there as long as Gunnison has. Girls beside me had biscuits and gravy. Food. Had the Bacon Spinach Feta Omlette, it was dece. Home fries were deep fried cubes, not very tasty except after gravy and Cholula. Bisquit was large and fluffy, I prefer denser and buttery. Speaking of butter, get your butter packets out early to thaw, order your toast dry otherwise you get "MARGARINED!" (BOoo, hiss, hydrogenated!) Waitresses were On Point! Friendly and mindful. I was driving through Gunnison and stopped here to eat breakfast. My friend and I ordered vegetarian plates, with everything designated as vegetarian. 2/3 of the way through my meal I took a bite and automatically knew I had just chewed bacon, spit it out, and unfortunately, I was right. A random piece of bacon had made it into my dish due to sloppy, inattentive cooking in the kitchen. I had to leave after I showed our server the animal, and just started crying. The server had sort of indifferently said that it was strange that there was bacon in my meal, then said she would comp it, which she did. Animal eaters don't understand how heart rending it is to have your ethics violated in this way, when you have dedicated your life to avoiding participating in a system that tortures/murders and treats other living beings as a means rather than an end. I hope no vegans or vegetarians ever eat here again. I haven't eaten an animal in 16 years. I am traumatized. I am heartbroken. read more

We had breakfast/lunch there today. Service was excellent. Waitresses were cheerful and attentive. I had the breakfast burrito. It was scrumptious. Eggs were tasty and chilli, salsa, sour cream and guacamole were delicious. I chose a side of fruit and this where the W really stepped up and out-did the average café. The side of fruit was a beautiful selection of bananas, kiwi, apple, grapefruit, cantaloupe, honeydew, raspberries, strawberries blackberries, grapes, apple AND orange slices. Please see pic. E and I have been together for nine and a half years, and I've been coming to Gunny for almost as long, so how had I never made it to the W before last weekend?!?!?!? E and I stopped in for breakfast Fourth of July weekend. As one of the only breakfast spots in town, the place was understandably busy We were told around 15 minutes for a table, but it actually ended up being about 30-40. I never get really angry about this, as I know guessing wait times is an imperfect process dependent on many factors, but I was starting to get a little hangry by the time we were finally seated. Not to fear, our food came quickly out of the kitchen and was everything my breakfast dreams are made of! I ordered a sausage and cheese omelette with hashbrowns and a biscuit and was definitely not disappointed. The omelette was fluffy and loaded with cheese and sausage, the hashbrowns were prepared perfectly (crisp-yet-greasy), and the biscuit was simply delicious. Washed it all down with a few cups of coffee and left much happier than I arrived! This place is a long-time Gunnison staple and rightfully so. I've been going to the W for over 15 years. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. This is the best place to go after a night out. You always get a huge plateful. Yes, you will have to wait most likely, but what do you expect from a small town. This is a place for the locals. Just remember that Gunnison is not like being in the real world. I came in town to visit my friend in Boulder a couple weeks ago and we took a drive down to Telluride for a concert. We decided to take the scenic route on the way there via route 285. Gunnison is about the half way point btw Boulder and Telluride, and since we left at 4am from Boulder, it was still breakfast time by the time we reached the W Cafe. I pulled this gem off of Yelp and knew it was going to be a good spot. My buddy ordered the winning dish, the country fried steak. It was monstrously large and perfectly fried. Batter was a golden brown and crispy as ever, and the steak was moist and delicious. I ordered an omelette special that was similar to a Denver omelette. All ingredients were freshy fresh fresh. In fact, since Gunnison is so rural, it felt like we were eating farm picked ingredients. Either way, it was unanimously decided by my friend and I that the chef here knows what he's doing and would probably succeed just about anywhere in the country. W Cafe is a MUST stop if you're in the area and hungry. Besides the town of Gunnison, there's really nothing else within 100+ miles anyway. read more

Very solid breakfast with great fast service. I was impressed with their vegan green chili burrito. The sauce was very hardy and homemade taste to it. I enjoyed their hash-browns too. Nice crispy and not soggy like most breakfast dinners serve them. It was pretty reasonable prices too so I will be returning when I come through again.
