Have to preface this by saying that Starwoods is my preferred hotel of choice. By far. I hardly ever stay anywhere else.
At this hotel especially, the staff is incredible! Friendly, helpful, attentive..really topnotch, some of the best I've ever experienced....
However, and here get ready for a long list of litanies....
The rooms are poorly designed (did they have an architect or a (poor) design major backed up by a stager in love with bad Danish?
The screen between the bath and the bedroom area is at first glance charming, but my being a night owl, whilst my wife is not, created some uncomfortable evening banter, and the lack of good ventilation could have made things even worse. Sometimes it's nice to keep bathroom things in the bathroom, not wafting through permeable translucent barriers.
Oh, and did I mention that to have the bathroom lights on, you have to have the room lights on? Maybe this is an anomaly, but in my room the bathroom light switches didn't turn on any lights unless the main room lights were on. Being a Real Estate Broker, I know that in proper staging the lights should be on to give a bright and cheery appearance, but should this really apply to a hotel?
The rooms are also rather noisy. In spite of having a corner room (again, thank you staff!), I don't know why it sounded like heavy duty trampoline jumping from the room above. On second thought, maybe I shouldn't speculate. But I didn't like hearing it in a quality (?) hotel.
Which brings me to the reason that I started this review in the first place. I know that hotel rooms in Boston are pricey. I know that parking is dear. I know that room service will set you back (but seriously, $225.00 for a 750 ml of Ketel? I know, you don't have to order it), all this I expected and accept...
But $14.95 a day for Internet from your room? Here I draw the line. Even Motel 6 (I think) gives you free Internet. Certainly all of the (less expensive) hotels at which I've stayed do.
If W wants to carry this through to its logical conclusion, then why not meter the water and sewer that you use, charge you for the electricity consumed, any trash collection, heat,....hell...why not charge for elevator use? You can climb stairs, can't you?
On the other hand, maybe I shouldn't give management any ideas.
Not all of us are on expense accounts and don't give a.....what things cost. Actually, most of us aren't on expense accounts anymore if my company's T&E policies are any example.
I don't mind spending for luxury, I don't mind splurging to spoil myself, my family, friends, and casual hangers-on, but I do mind being gouged for no reason.
BTW, I bitched and got the Internet for free. Didn't change the policy, I'm sure, but if enough of us bitch....
They'll probably raise the room rates.
And then I'll stay somewhere else, but no, not Motel 6. It's not that important that they'll leave the lights on for you....
Even if they do give you free Internet. read more
