This place is perfection. Service was friendly and impassioned. We received a little tour as soon as we checked in. We were on our way out to Fenway, so the friendly gentleman at the front desk was kind enough to give us walking directions after he showed us around the guest spaces and our room. Location: 5 : an easy 10 minute walk to Fenway, a 12 minute walk to the Commons. A wealth of eating options, safe secure and walkable in every direction. Room: 5 Our room was impeccable with impressive personal touches and attention to detail. Little things like Fiji water, fresh soft towels (and a black towel for makeup), full array of toiletries, and a welcoming comfortable firm bed. Despite having alllll the things to do in Boston, I was excited to get back to that room and that bed, and I slept like a log. I like a good bed when I'm traveling and I would never stay at another place if I had the option. My favorite aspect was having a separate bedroom and living area (with pull out couch). All things comparable, I've stayed in a thousand hotels, I've traveled Boston thoroughly. This will be my go-to forever. Whether traveling single, as a couple, or with my kids, I will look at 284 first and foremost. Kid-friendly: yes! I would definitely stay here with my kids (ages 9, 11, 13). Safe, fun, welcoming, and wallet-friendly. Special bonus and wow impression: each room is themed after a different artist. I love love love this concept and intrigued me a thousand times over. What a great luxury boutique hotel in such a convenient location too! The hotel is filled with beautiful artwork with each room named named and inspired by a different artist. I got a chance to stay in the Jim Dine room which was so lovely, and I really liked having the kitchenette within it as well! Their bed and everything else was super comfortable and I slept like a log. Customer service was amazing too, and they were so kind in helping me out finds places to see and things to do. Probably closer to a 3.5 but important to highlight that things have changed from pre-pandemic reviews. We stayed here for three nights this past weekend, and we'd honestly consider it again if pressed. Cleanliness: 4 (carpet is a bit grimy so kept our shoes on the entire time, but bathroom and sheets were 5/5) Bed comfort: 5 Check-In: 4 (no one is present, key code provided ahead of time. Your code for the front of the brownstone is the same as your room. We had friends also book a room here, codes were different. Seems like there's a phone no to text if you're having issues. Check-Out: 3 (limited lockers to store bags if you're out all day and need to leave your bags before you travel or fly out later that day. We noticed all were taken at 10p the night before we checked out and one was available at 11 when we checked out. We had checked starting at 8:30a for locker availability. I suspect people take them the night before. We even saw a few suitcases in the lounge with a note begging them to not be touched... we carried our second bag for the rest of the day. Pain in the butt so if you're staying late, may recommend a regular hotel for the bell hop alone) General comfort: 3 (we had a studio on the 4th floor, the space around the bed is barely walkable for average sized folks and a lot of space was taken up by the cabinet. Friends got the suite and it was great and worth the additional price. Unfortunately another wasn't available by the time we booked. Biggest kicker: if you keep the air on overnight, almost every 1.5- 2 hours the vent rattles like it's going to burst. I'm considered a deep sleeper and I'd jolt awake every time, leaving me exhausted the next morning. If there was someone at the front, I'd let them know but I didn't want to find the right number to call to see if they could fix it since they'd be all in our stuff - the room was so small you couldn't even move it out of the way for anyone to come take a look. Of course if you're a heavier sleeper than me, like my partner, this is an ideal spot and worth the price. read more

I came to Boston for a work trip. My flight landed in the early AM. No.284 was so accommodating despite my early arrival and no room available yet. I was shown to the continental breakfast (very nice !) and cute library type area and given a log in to the wifi to do some work while waiting. There was a nice garden/little courtyard type area, which I absolutely would have used had it been warmer. I was able to get into my room before having to leave for a work event and the room was just perfect! Clean, very cozy with the fireplace, very comfy bed, spacey, intimate feel, great bath products, soft towels and the hotel is in the perfect location! Loved the place, loved the accommodations and staff.... I would give more stars if possible! I would absolutely come back here and have already start telling others. read more

No. 284 is a hidden gem. It shouldn't stay hidden, and my guess is it won't be for long. You get top quality design, room, location, and care at a great-priced rate. My wife and I stayed in a petite queen room and were very pleased. We were pleased to see the standard amenities such as mini fridge, kitchen sink, microwave (boring but essential), but we were wowed with the details. Nespresso, Fiji water, bath robes, slippers, top quality sheets, comfortable beds, great room design/decor, and quality bath products (elemis? Smells incredible). The No. 284 staff has been incredible. Before we ever stepped foot inside, they were helpful with a quick and helpful (and human!) response to a question I asked via email. They were incredibly helpful and kind upon our arrival as well - including leaving a handwritten note and delicious chocolates in our room because they knew it was our 3 year wedding anniversary. I mean... come on. That's great! They also have a couple common areas that are fantastic. A room called the Library and an outside space are great places to unwind and enjoy! They're wonderful and very nicely designed/decorated (a common theme in No. 284!). Location to shops and great restaurants and within walking distance to all the sites of Boston! *Parking is a bit of an issue. That's a bit of a downfall. They mentioned Prudential Garage as an option, but my wife and I parked in their other recommendation of the Greenhouse Garage, which has proven to be the best and most affordable option. Park there if you can. Visiting the city of Boston and need a great place to stay? Want a more personal experience with your visit to the city? Lovely experience at No. 284. Located just behind Cafeteria (Newbury) on Comm Ave, this fabulous guest house is so close to so many great things in Boston: Newbury Street, the Pru, Copley Place and many great restaurants on Boylston Street. I booked through the Hotel Tonight app and payment and check in was a breeze. Aura was very pleasant and helpful at check-in, providing restaurant recommendations and information on the shuttle to Logan. She also instructed us in how to use the secure entrance on Comm Ave and showed us the nice spread of complimentary beverages and snacks at the back of the house, right next to their beautiful library/ lounge area. As we didn't have an opportunity to eat lunch, having rushed up to Boston from Rhode Island, we enjoyed some coffee (Nespresso), bananas, oranges, a brownie and a chocolate chip cookie. The whole house is extremely fresh and clean. I was particularly impressed with how clean the toaster was in the snack area. Dishes, silverware, everything was immaculate. The library/ lounge is absolutely beautiful with a great array of art books and original art works. There's also a fireplace, but there was no fire in it when we were there. There's a lovely outdoor patio with lounge seating as well, but not exactly ideal for Boston in December. We enjoyed ourselves very much in the library/ lounge perusing some books on Nicholas Nixson and Van Gogh while drinking Nespresso and snacking. Since we booked with Hotel Tonight our room was selected by the hotel and was extremely small. I would not stay here if you're looking to have a lot of space, but it was great for us to just stay overnight and enjoy some experiences in Boston and catch a flight. I could see it could start to feel claustrophobic after awhile. Maybe okay for the solo traveler or if you're not planning on spending much time in your room. Room included a mini fridge, microwave, mini Nespresso coffee maker, plates, wine glasses, mugs, espresso cups and and cutlery as well as corkscrews and a few other niceties. USBs on the night stand. A little street noise. My only minor complaints: Our room had no soap in the bathroom for hands, but we were quickly provided with a bar when we asked at the office I stubbed my toe on the door stopper on the floor- not sure why they couldn't just put one in the wall. Owww. Walls seemed very thin: we could hear the people next door Overall, however, for a quick stay in Boston, this place was great and far exceeded my expectations! read more

Great little spot in Back Bay! My husband and I just stayed at No. 284 to celebrate our wedding anniversary during a quick 3-night stay in Boston. I've been to the city twice before but have stayed in downtown both times. I was looking for something a little more quaint and that's exactly what we found here! The staff was exceptional, very accommodating and welcoming. Our room was beautiful and came complete with a small kitchen, microwave and coffee maker. Breakfast is minimal so just be prepared to still grab a bite once you head out. Back to the location - I can't say enough! Back Bay is far enough from the hustle and bustle that you can enjoy quiet streets at night but close enough that you can get to the excitement by walking less than five minutes north. There were several shops, restaurants and bars nearby. No. 284 is a phenomenal choice if you're headed to Boston and looking for a low key stay and awesome experience!! read more

We so thoroughly enjoyed our stay at 284. The room and hotel are gorgeous, stately and unique. The location is great and we were able to do most of our sight seeing from here without a car (there's a hop on/hop off trolley stop just beyond the pru which took us to all the places we wanted to see and dropped us back off close to home). Walking distance to many great restaurants and galleries as well. Each room is named for an artist and has original art of the artist. There is also original and professionally labeled art through the halls and library. As an artist, I truly appreciated this touch. The room seemed a little humid, we were below ground with hopper windows looking out over the street. We asked and got advice on the ac which seemed to help a bit. Overall we were very pleased with the stay and will recommend it to anyone we can! read more

This place doesn't look like much from the outside but once you step inside you are greeted by an amazing person by the name of Rich who is super personable and was really informative for my boyfriend and I who don't know much about the Boston area. Our room (#23) was the perfect size for the two of us. The bed was SO COMFORTABLE, the sheets were so soft, and the decor throughout was minimal and chic. It was centrally located which was amazing when traveling to Fenway for a Friday night game and around the shops on Newbury all-day Saturday. We would totally stay here again. We stayed in this conveniently located guest house last night to enjoy the Boston nightlife before flying in the early morning to the Caribbean. This is a beautifully designed and appointed haven just a short walk from the Prudential, accessible to the Copley Square MBTA station and the Back Bay commuter rail station. We were greeted by Aura, a most gracious hostess who introduced us to the amenities, including their library and courtyard, complimentary Nespresso coffee and teas,pastries, fruits, and cold beverages that you can enjoy while perusing art books and original art pieces in the warm and cozy library. Each room is dedicated to an artist, with original art and books on the artist. The standard room has a queen bed, a Nespresso coffee maker with complimentary pods, water bottles, and a nice refrigerator. It also has a microwave and a locked security box. The bed was cozy and the room, although small, is quite luxurious. And with tax it was $114 through the Hotel Tonight app. Will be back again! read more

Location - I drove in from NJ so had to bring my car in, although I was advised to not bring it if I had the option. Parking at Prudential Garage was 1-2 blocks away, which was extremely convenient with the overpacking I tend to do. After parking, I was able to walk EVERYWHERE. The hotel was in perfect distance to most attractions, food, bars, etc. Customer service - The staff was so very friendly! They welcomed us with a tour of the hotel and all the amenities. When we first arrived one of the women (maybe the manager?) also told me she had moved us in a room with a great view. Comfort - THAT SHOWER! Phenomenal (coupled with the amazing smelling shampoos and conditioners) and the best part of the stay right next to the bed! Omg those sheets and pillows, along with the blackout shades. Wonderful boutique hotel with very thoughtful concierge and in a great Back Bay location. Suggest that the hotel negotiate some kind of parking arrangement with Prudential so that customers don't have to pay full price for daily parking in the Prudential Garage which is quite expensive. Moreover, the hotel should consider securing a single full-time parking spot on Commonwealth (directly in front of hotel) or on the side street for loading and unloading luggage as the walk from Prudential with baggage is not ideal. read more

I can't say ENOUGH about this gem! From when I called to make a reservation until I called because I left something behind after check-out, the staff is professional and caring!!! The accommodations blew me away....I booked a King Luxe room and it was spectacular - bright, spacious, immaculate and beautifully appointed. Anything I needed was at my fingertips. They serve "sweets" in the afternoon (delightful after a long drive!) and a lovely continental breakfast in the morning. They have an intimate library that doubles as a dining room and a lovely outdoor patio. I LOVED IT! Our stay was excellent - the staff were very welcoming and accommodating, the room was beautiful and clean and the location is great for getting anywhere in the city. The street is quiet and residential, but right around the corner from great restaurants, shopping and attractions like Copley Square and the Charles River esplanade. We couldn't be happier with our stay at No. 284. We had a last minute sitter and booked a room in this lovely hotel for a quick getaway. We ended up with a petite queen (#43 to be exact). Our room was small, but perfect to meet our needs, and exactly as described. It's newly opened and very modern/clean. The design is beautiful and the art is amazing (if you stay, take some time to check out the No. 284 book in the hotel's common area. It gives an overview of all of the art throughout the hotel). As I said, the room was so nice, with an extremely comfortable bed and pillows, and high quality linens. Everything is tastefully decorated. I love that they include a small refrigerator, microwave, and small kitchen area with a Nespresso machine in all guest rooms. For our room they provide a ton of kitchen-like cabinets in the kitchen area. My only comment is that it seemed sort of a waste of space. I wish they had included half of the cabinets and allowed for more real estate in the room. But I totally appreciate that they include the kitchen at all. There is complimentary water in the room, and all standard amenities like a safe, iron, hair dryer, and toiletries. We were happy with the view out our window. There is a kitchen area on the first floor as well, with complimentary coffee, tea, sodas, juices, waters...the fridge was even stocked with some yogurts and there was extra fruit and a few pastries when we arrived. The ice maker is in this same area. It's a really thoughtful amenity. Just off the common kitchen is a dining area and courtyard. This is the same place they serve a complimentary continental breakfast. The breakfast was quite good with a selection of cereals, fruits and pastries (nice breads for toasting, bagels, muffins, strudel, croissants, cookies), plus the drinks/yogurts that are available 24x7. Everything was replenished frequently and what we tried was delicious. The location on Commonwealth Ave is very convenient to shopping, restaurants, parks/areas of interest, and parking (there is no on-site parking, but parking at the Prudential Center was very convenient...2 blocks from the hotel, and reasonably priced). Finally, but certainly not least, the staff was super friendly! Everyone we interacted with was welcoming and helpful and just genuine. We were very impressed. We would happily stay here again and can recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay in Boston. read more

Liked this boutique hotel for its charm and location on a previous visit two years ago, but this time the stay was only so-so because they are clearly understaffed. We waited to be checked in, we waited to be checked out, we waited for assistance when the room telephone and the coffee maker did not work, all because there seemed to be only one harried staff person in the entire hotel, trying to do it all. We were on the fifth floor and could not get through to the front desk, neither with the room telephone (which was out of order) nor with our cell phone. We twice left messages with the answering service and even resorted to emailing the hotel, but it took almost an hour before someone got back to us. For the fairly hefty cost of the accommodations, far better service should have been provided. I know there is a staff shortage due to the Covid pandemic, but surely the hotel can hire one extra assistant if it paid a bit more in wages? read more

This hotel is one of the most unique places I have ever stayed. It is beautifully and originally appointed, highlighting the original details of the mansion. As a designer and artist myself, I enjoyed the impressive collection of artworks and individual character of each of the rooms and common areas.
